Baltimore is freaking out like we're in the eye of the storm but we've only had a steady dusting that melts on impact. I was kind of hoping for a snow day. Oh well.
I'll be there for my first visit next week. It'll be pretty damn quick though.Quoting Scar (view post)
I should have time for a meetup in early April.

I am trying to buy a car without human interaction, based on a humorous/informative post from The Toast.
"I don't believe in talking on the phone. Here is my e-mail..."
"When can you come in for a test drive? I'd like to discuss this in person."
"Dunno, so busy e-mailing other people selling the same car cheaper. Send pictures of the following..."
I will win this battle.
I started my first day of student teaching today. So far there has been two fights, a student escorted by security, and a 7th grader asking me if I want a hand job.
Did I mention I teach at one of the lowest performing schools (academically and behaviorally) in California? I'm amazed my credential program allows first-time student teachers to teach here.
Sure why not?

Is this the two-month variety of student teaching during a last year of BA, where you're not required (or, moreover) expected back at this school next school year? That is, you're not obligated to student-work in this environment beyond these two months, right? is there any chance of using particular readings to more directly appeal to them and their experiences? (I'm likely off by a year or so, but Sherman Alexie and Sandra Cisneros kinda stuff?)Quoting Watashi (view post)
You'll have my thoughts if things don't improve down the line.

No, this is a full year credential program. The first half, you're just assisting and helping out by being a co-teacher. The second half, you step in and assume the role of the teacher and the entire classroom is yours.
I had no say in the school or district I was going to teach at. Some students got really excellent schools, but some of us were placed in a poor district. For a middle school, I expect a lot of zoned out students and the typical reluctant reader, but when these consist of 95% of the student population, it's hard to maintain any form of classroom management when insults are hurled regularly and most of the the class don't do their work. I'm just starting out, but this school doesn't really allow much creativity in bringing in new material beyond what the district allows (the district supplies teachers with premade lessons and units). The school actually forgoes homework because the staff knows it won't be completed and these students come from very broken homes. Even the teachers who teach there are miserable and just trying to keep their sanity in check.
It's not ALL bad. There is an "honors" class, and these students generally work together well and are enthusiastic about the material, but this is just a small small portion.

Speaking as a woman who was heavily socialized to be polite and accomodating, it is so freeing to use e-mail. It makes it so much easier to be demanding and terse.
Wats - I once subbed at a school that had about 50 students, and 4 armed security guards. None of the students were allowed anywhere without adult supervision.
Funny enough, it was one of the best subbing experience I ever had. Those students had experienced more life in their 16-18 years that I will ever experience.
T-Mobile got Kim Kardashian as their spokesperson? Soooo ... it looks like I'm moving to Verizon.
Do you really dislike her that much? I've been trying to wrap my head around the celebrity hate that is the internet right now. I just don't see it... Because she married Kanye? Because her family decided to have a reality show? Because you think she is dumb? An idiot? A loser? What?Quoting Spun Lepton (view post)
I just don't get it. She is a human being. She is not a plague.

I've been thinking about dumping T-Mobile already because their coverage stinks in my part of the city. I can't have a conversation for more than 10 minutes without the call dropping.
T-Mobile's choice of spokespeople speaks volumes about their desired customer base.
T-Mobile is definitely the bottom of the barrel when it comes to cell service.
I have no opinion on T-Mobile because I've never used it.
I also don't know enough about what Kim Kardashian say and do to accurately say if she's bratty and/or vapid.

I just thought it was hilarious that the T Mobile ads showed her occupation as "Famous Person".
Even they don't know what it is she does!

Man I really hate snowstorms. And it had to happen on Super Bowl Sunday.
Yeah, Denver got 6-8 inches over the span of the night. I'm not going anywhere.
