It poured 10-16 inches of snow here yesterday while I was at the fire department.

Ridiculously busy during the day as wrecks, lockouts, gas detectors (pilot lights going off), and sick people.

We doubled the crew at night, and did nothing.

Good times. Now I'm at my store answering phone calls of people that can't drive in because of the snow. Wusses, it's already melting, and the roads are fine if you're smart.

Gah, gah, gah--TOP CHEF is filming outside my office (the Flatiron Building). Just ran outside and got my name on the list for the 11am show. Hosea was there but Carla wasn't, so the fact that my anger was placated by telling myself that the winner of Top Chef would never directly effcte my life has just proved false. Goddamnit, Hosea sucks.

thefourthwall is visiting friends in Denver right now, and she was telling me about the snowfall yesterday. Apparently your city doesn't really salt the roads (or at least not where the friend lives). That seems oddly logical to me. And makes for much more entertainment.

Must just be the place because it's nearly all melted around here already.

It was a total wash; it wasn't the filming of an episode, but some sort of demo. It's part of the tour they're doing now, and only Nikki (from Season 4) and Hosea were there. They cooked some food, chatted a bit (Hosea, unsurprisingly, had nothing interesting to say), and then we tried the food they cooked. There was a Q&A afterwards, but the questions were censored and I was quickly tagged as a commie, artist asshole when I asked a question about misrepresentation in editing, and what they wanted to set straight after the show ended. They gave uncomfortable answers, seeming as if they wanted to make a correction but kept falling back on "well, we DID sign up for a TV show even though we just wanted to be chefs." So, basically, they acknowledged my question and discarded it in favor of telling everyone, in multiple ways, that the show is edited. Cop-out (and I don't blame them).

The news feed from my e-mail/ISP just showed me an article looking at a study that links the drinking of hot drinks (tea, coffee, cocoa, etc.) to throat cancer.

I give up. Seriously. EVERYTHING gives you cancer down the line.

It's like George Carlin said - soon they'll be telling us that swallowing saliva in very small amounts over a long period of time will lead to stomach cancer.

I'm beginning to think cancer is just a totally random occurrence. If you're going to get lung cancer, you're going to get it regardless of how much or little you smoke. If you're going to get stomach cancer later in life, you're going to get it regardless of how much chlorine is used to treat the water in your city.

I mean, the toxens that occur naturally in the air due to car emissions can give you lung cancer, so why bother fighting it?

I just don't care anymore. If I take the time to worry about how the plastic on my keyboard is going to give me skin cancer and the polyester in my pajamas will give me testicular cancer, I'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

Oh and this post has been written with a certain amount of sarcasm for anyone who couldn't tell.

But I honestly am getting to a point where I just don't care anymore, because it seems like every month there's a new cancer scare.

We can't protect ourselves from all this shit, so we might as well just live our lives to the best of our ability.

I think sheltering ourselves from nearly everything is just as detrimental to our health (both physical and mental) as smoking 3 packs a day.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

Probably the wisest approach. Not caring, that is. Because, as we all know, caring too much causes stress. And stress causes cancer.

Stress also causes ulcers, so I think I'll take cancer over cancer AND ulcers.

Same here. I have nothing against piercings or tattoos, but it's just not me, not to mention I would probably fear the pain.

I just turned on one of Sci-Fi Channel's patented original movies, and there seems to be a pattern of replacing actual storytelling with a bunch of lame-brained "special effects". I guess that showing rather than telling only works if your methods of showing don't absolutely suck.

The Lost World is on now. When I watched this movie in theaters and on DVD, the movie cut from the girl screaming to Malcolm yawning, as he was boarding a subway car. This time, it cut to a suit yawning at a board meeting, where John Hammond is removed as CEO of In-Gen. I don't remember that scene existing before; am I alone in not remembering this scene?

In the theatre, it cut to Malcom. The scene you're referring to is an extra scene, probably added in to adjust the length for television.

So I'm finally employed. At a movie theater, no less. Not sure if this will be a good thing, but I do really need money badly.

Also I currently enjoy watching RTN's Off Beat Cinema program each week, as they show really weird/bad/out there movies every Sunday night. Many of them are pretty awful, but I'm always down with seeking out something new. Tonight its White Zombie, which I've actually wanted to see for some time.

Even if you delude yourself into thinking that smoking does not cause cancer, you can at least acknowledge that it causes a cornucopia of other health problems.

Yes. Smoking does not cause cancer. That's exactly what I said.

If that's not what you meant by, "If you're going to get lung cancer, you're going to get it regardless of how much or little you smoke," then please tell me what you did mean. Because it sounds like you're saying that smoking has no effect on whether or not one gets lung cancer.

Of course being a smoker increases the chances of getting lung cancer, but seeing many of both of these cases in my life:

    a) people who never smoked in their life dying of lung cancer

    b) people who smoked all their life and still do, and are living into their 90s

...has led me to believe that there's probably some factor that we're not aware of yet whcih is making it seem "random".

Basically, as I said on another forum, I don't advocate smoking 2 packs a day, but I think that if you enjoy smoking the occasional cigar/cigarette, I don't think that's a horrible thing.

Yes, and I still suspect you are trying to deny the negative effects of smoking just so you don't feel obligated to change your behavior for the sake of your health. You're going to have to come up with some reason to believe that emphysema is a "totally random occurrence," too.

    I smoke weed irregularly.
