The first customer was a woman who had one of our free estimates done for a carpet installation (the guy went to her house and took measurements, faxed that back to me and I built an estimate for the labour).

Because she was having carpet and underpad installed on a concrete subfloor, there was a concrete surcharge (for prepping the floor, installing tack strips, etc.).

She didn't agree with the charge, and I told her I was sorry but even though I do, personally, feel it's a little high, I cannot waive the charge - the price is the price unfortunately.

At this point she actually became so angry she began trembling at the desk, got up, at started yelling at me about how this was all bullshit and I should be ashamed of myself trying to steal money from people.

The second was a another woman who wanted a carpet installation. She had come in on the 4th to organize an estimate, hoping for the carpet to be installed before this coming weekend as she's having a party.

We only just yesterday got the information back from the installer about the measurement, so I built the estimate and called her, and of course she's furious because this all didn't go as quickly as she wanted it to.

I apologized profusely and she kept calling me a liar because I should have known and told her that it wasn't going to be done in time (but the problem is, Lowe's advertises we can do carpet installations in 72 hours, so it really should have been done by then).

She wants to talk the store manager now and blah, blah, blah.

Whenever something like this happens, my mind automatically jumps to "this person is going to get me fired", and I get really upset.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

Try not to let it weigh you down like that. I'm sure your manager/store manager know there are just customers out there who live in their little ideal bubble-and think the world revolves around them- but that's just not the way life works. Like, it's somehow YOUR fault that she had a party in the next 72 hours and therefor should get everything done before then? I roll my eyes at her. People have no idea how the world works sometimes.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

    Thanks, Duke

It's one of those things where even though I know that it's an irrational fear, it still gets to me. I guess maybe it's the fact that someone like that has the balls the try to mess with someone's livelihood (getting someone fired) because they didn't get carpet installed when they wanted it.

It's not like I work in a hospital and a fuck-up could mean someone's life. This is fairly minor stuff.

In all honesty, yes, the process could have been handled better. I could have made it clearer to our installs department that this was a "rush job". But I think that, unfortunately, things just didn't work out for her (this is the busiest season of the year for flooring projects) and I'm sure we will give her a great deal on the installation if she still wants to go for it.

Like I said originally, I just really need to develop a thicker skin with these things. Really, she was yelling at Lowe's, not yelling at me personally. But because I'm the person she's met, and to her I'm "the face of Lowe's" in this situation, I'm the one who got the unpleasantness.

Only thing that may get you in trouble is this. Never apologize for the prices.

At this point she actually became so angry she began trembling at the desk, got up, at started yelling at me about how this was all bullshit and I should be ashamed of myself trying to steal money from people.
No reason for you to be ashamed. Your company set the prices, you're just an employee.

Two that I'm pretty weird about, and six more where I'm an above-casual fan.

Sheesh. No wonder I have no spare time.

Not sure I'm "devoted" to any of them, but in terms of considering myself a fan, I belong to:

    Stephen Colbert
    Community
    Arrested Development
    A Game of Thrones

And honestly, that's also probably a descending rank of my "devotion" to them.

i'm crazy obsessed with mad men, a former phishhead who still possesses a fondness for them, quite in-love with colbert if not a die-hard devotee, same with gaiman and community. whedon, duh. arrested development, absolutely. doctor who, of course. and i quite like game of thrones.

so to separate them into mara's categories, i would say i'm pretty weird about 4 (whedon, mad men, AD and who) and an above-casual fan of five others.

    Mad Men
    Colbert
    Arrested Development

Some of the rest I enjoy but could certainly live without. Seems like a weird list.

I'm a fan of a lot of those, but I'll say I'm only a fanboy (to the extent of owning multiple merchandise and vehemently defending them and acquiring as much knowledge as possible and such) of Community, Star Trek, Joss Whedon and Doctor Who. I used to include Star Wars in that but that ship sails further and further each year.

I don't even know what some of that shit is.

I do admit to belonging to these (ardent) fanbases from the list:

    Neil Gaiman
    Arrested Development
    Lord of the Rings

... and even the last one is a bit of a stretch. I did read it twice.

    None.

I like a few of those things, but not enough to consider myself a part of the fanbase.

I thought The Wire would be number 1, and I'm definitely one of those guys when it comes to that - so much so that I assumed it would be number 1, because it's the number 1 show of all time.

It's a bit harder to pinpoint that kind of multimedia, multicontinuity property like comic book characters. All the properties listed are pretty streamlined and contained. Even Star Wars and Star Trek.

I'm like Davis. I appreciate a lot of those fanbases, but I'm not really devoted to them. I rarely ever buy merchandise or get crazy defensive about them. I like Community, A Game of Thrones, and some stuff by Whedon and Gaiman, but not enough to go crazy with them.

Sometimes I envy people who are so devoted to one of these properties to the point where they watch/read it religiously, throw themed parties, dress up as characters, go to expos, etc. It looks really fun, but I just don't have the time or energy for it.

Let it be said that people who throw Mad Men themed parties are weirder than the sci-fi fans who do the same.

I always get invited to those and I'm like, even if I liked Mad Men that much, I am not going to go to your small apartment to drink cheap booze and huddle together in our ill-fitting suits and thrift store dresses to watch fucking TV. That just looks mental.

"The Wire" fanboys bother me, and I even consider it one of (if not the) greatest shows of all time.

They're some of the most condescending, acerbic fanboys I've met IRL.

D - do you even still like the Star Wars OT? Or has your intense hatred of everything since those films coloured them as well?

I really can't understand disliking a property so much that I would wish it out of existence. Seems like it'd be pretty easy to just ignore it.
