I found it easier to be friendly with my neighbors in a suburban setting, where you have the privacy of lawns and space between you. Although we're in houses, my neighbors and I live as close as if we were all in the same apartment building, because it's such an old, narrow street (about eight feet wide) and we don't have front lawns. We just all tend to get in each other's business. There's nowhere to retreat.
However, I went to a huge multi-neighborhood flea market this morning and had a blast hanging out and chatting with the locals. Everyone has a story.
