That sounds about right.

I found it easier to be friendly with my neighbors in a suburban setting, where you have the privacy of lawns and space between you. Although we're in houses, my neighbors and I live as close as if we were all in the same apartment building, because it's such an old, narrow street (about eight feet wide) and we don't have front lawns. We just all tend to get in each other's business. There's nowhere to retreat.

However, I went to a huge multi-neighborhood flea market this morning and had a blast hanging out and chatting with the locals. Everyone has a story.

Depends on the generation, but yes. I'd say people recount exactly where they were during the JFK Assassination and Pearl Harbor.

Has there been another recent American tragedy I'm not thinking of? The only other one in history that's comparable is Pearl Harbor and I know that day is marked on calendars frequently. I can remember the media making a big deal about the 50th anniversary. The goal? I would say it's similar to Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. Not to forget about the lives that were lost those days. Not only the victims, but the heroes.

There's no real need to rant. She's doing it more for herself than for anything I did. She's pretty much been in two long relationships since high school with not much single time to speak of. She needs to figure stuff out on her own, and find out what being independent is all about. I can respect that. But the whole thing came out of left field, because she didn't know how to express it. Blindsided me. Coupled with everything else that's happening i'm having a tough time. She's my best friend. I'm reeling hard.

That's not really the same thing. The ability to recount where you were during the occurrence of a nationally tragic event is a widespread psychological phenomena. I'm talking about all of these twitter, facebook statuses etc with people expressing their heartfelt well wishes to all the victims of 9/11. Personally it strikes me as disingenuous and false, but granted I'm a fairly jaded individual.

No, but I didn't hear people remarking upon the anniversary of these events on a regular basis either (facebook just being an extension of day to day conversation in many ways). Whether it's JFK or any other politician or celebrity or event, the anniversary of such a thing was never a point of conversation in my life at least with the people I associate with. No one came up to me this year on June 25th and spoke about MJ's deathiversary... although I"m sure the media covered it because they cover everything.

Well for people who were directly affected then yeah I can totally understand that and I'm not trying to pass judgment on those who were uniquely affected at all. It's just the onslaught of statuses that's starting to rub me the wrong way.
