If someone reps you, whatever their rep power is, that number is added to your rep points. So if I were to rep you right now, my rep power being 1, your rep points would jump from 12 to 13. The more points you accumulate, the more little green boxes will show up. However, negative rep subtracts from your rep points and can eliminate a green box.

Raiders set the starting point at 10 (or at 5 for selected lesser posters or "morlocks"), and it goes up based on the amount of rep power the person giving it to you has. Say, if you gave someone rep their rep power would go up by one.

I think everyone starts at 10, then when someone reps you you get their rep power added (or subtracted if it's a negative rep) to that. Right now everyone is 1 or 0 rep power, so it'll go by 1s, but eventually some people will post too much and have complete rep power over everyone by giving out 10 or more points per rep. The little boxes add in correspondance to your current reputation, like every 20 or 25 rep points usually add a box until the max # of boxes.

It starts off pretty slowly at first, but after a few months everyone's rep power is pretty high and you gain rep 10-12 points at a time.

Mainly it's just fun getting little comments on a joke or post that you've made.
