One of the worst things about living in Arizona is scorpions. Found three in our house in the last week. One I almost stepped on going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My wife found one this morning in the bathroom sink (they like to come up through the drains).

I think I'm getting heartburn from a muffin.

    This is bullshit.

I've just figured out how to cure to California's drought:

Extend all the drain spouts on Minnesota roofs to California.

I had to crawl to a hospital in agonizing pain the other day and they found it was kidney stones. Damn. Of all the annoying, painful diseases.

Yikes. I've had a deathly fear of kidney stones since seeing that scene in Deadwood.

On the other hand, I'm enjoying this calculus class way too much. I'm starting to question whether I should continue pursuing journalism or turn to something more mathy (and thus more lucrative). I'm already double majoring in econ (with the intention of being a journalist that covers economic policy). I could turn to econ full bore, but that would require grad school, and I'm going to be at least 30 when I finish my undergrad. Major life decisions...

Have you done integrations? That and induction doomed my relationship with math. We broke up in 1999 citing irreconcilable differences. On the other hand, I was thinking of looking up Geometry - we had a thing going in the late 80s. Sordid affair, Spring of 86. Rowr.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

No, actually none is sure about the possible causes.

Obviously, I'm now on a diet and I had to stop even casual drinking... Sigh. Thanks for the encouraging words!

Yeah, currently doing integration. Antiderivatives are fun! Haven't done any induction yet though.

I assume you're aware of the studies out there that privilege mathematics as one of the most competitive degrees for locating jobs going forward? Likely difficult to combine the degree with anything literary or cinematic, but in terms of finding a salary waiting for you on the other side...

Had a potential roommate over today and liked her immensely. Want her to move in and wasn't sure how to convey that non-creepily, like without tackling her and screaming "PLEASE LIVE WITH MEEEEEE."
She's moving in next week. I'm so happy.

Something happened MONTHS ago that randomly started bothering me this morning. I'm going to crowd-source it as an etiquette question.

For the first time in a very long time I had a chance to visit two good friends at once. We were always together in college, and we've stayed friends, but because of distances I usually only talk/visit with one at a time. Both of them are married with children. There were some things we wanted to talk about over the course of our visit, some with husbands and kids around, and some without. I mentioned that there was a (painful, personal) issue I'd like to discuss with my friends when we had time. One evening, after the kids were asleep, they asked me to talk through the issue, and I shied away because friend #1's husband was in the room. The next night, they asked again and I started on my story, but then friend #1 became upset because I started talking with friend #2's husband there.

She said, essentially, "Oh, so it's okay to talk in front of her husband, but not mine?"

Obviously, I should have never made a distinction, but once it was happening I just decided to be honest, and I told her that with this particular issue I was very sensitive, and I was afraid that husband #1 would make fun of me, while I trusted that husband #2 wouldn't. I still maintain that this is true. Husband #1 is uncomfortable with serious conversations and sadness and tends to laugh or tease. Husband #2 is gentler, and would also have minded his own business. In fact, as soon as he realized what was going on, husband #2 left the room so we could talk without anyone else there.

It hurt my friend's feelings, and I felt bad about it. But I maintain that it was my own business and when it comes down to it, I should have some control over who knows about it. I very much doubt that my friend is holding a grudge, because she's very loving and we're close.

At the same time, though, this sort of violates my own policy, which has always been that I do not share information with a person and then tell that person not to tell their spouse. I've always felt like that was putting other people in an awkward position and creating secrets in a marriage.

But I wasn't objecting to having her tell him what happened-- I just didn't want him there. I didn't want him to see me cry. I didn't want him to tease me.

I don't know. It was really awkward.

I'm getting really tired of the drooling over the mugshot of this criminal Jeremy Meeks.

Really, though, this was part of a more long-term, difficult problem, which is the hinted-at but unspoken insinuation that I prefer husband #2 to husband #1.

Which is sort of based on reality.

I like them both, but I have a lot more respect for husband #2, who was been a more reliable husband and father, and has been a good friend to me for (holy cats, the math is freaking me out) seventeen years. Husband #1 is a good guy, but more troubled, occasionally faulty (sometimes seriously) as a husband and father, and can frankly be really irritating on occasion. I have (only???) known him for about eleven years. I like him, but our relationship is a bit more problematic, and I'm more likely to act like a responsible older sister trying to corral my li'l bro, and less like a friend and peer to him.

Everything else is equal. I love both my friends differently but equally, and I adore their children, differently but equally. So the husband issue sort of sticks out.

On a completely different note, I appreciate that customer service at Amazon.com is treating me like a grown-up with actual grown-up problems while discussing the fact that the post office lost my order of Newsies.

What a silly thing to get upset about. It's your personal issue. You get to decide who you're uncomfortable talking about it in front of. You're comfortable with Husband #2 because of who he is, not because of who he's married to.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

Okay, thanks. I didn't think I was being rude, although I do think I could have been a little more tactful.
