1)Shutter Island - $360 -- 75% -- Probably to remain in the top ten for the year as the DVD is about to be released.

2)Kick-Ass - $180 -- 50% -- A large amount of hatred at the beginning made one think this would be contending with Clash of the Titans, but alas, it found a niche group.

3)Alice in Wonderland - $180 - 22% -- Hey. It's still better than the 11% rating of Clash

4)How To Train Your Dragon - $140 -- 85% -- Word of mouth brings out the best in this movie.

Recent movie trips courtesy of half price Tuesdays and an old $35 gift card I found. HTTM had me laughing myself silly. The retro ski lodge scene is tops. Clash is a shoddy, poorly cobbled together mess of a film. It has one neat special effect shot at the end, even though it's right in the middle of a stupid chase sequence. Can't win with that one. I hope I'm the only mad fuck here who bestows a "yay" upon The Losers, thus invalidating my existence. But what can I say, it's lean and it actually has a villain, so seemingly rare for action films these days. A Nightmare on Elm Street is probably even worse than Clash. Aimless and utterly incompetent, all in service of a nonsense premise - a condemnation specifically meant for this reboot, not the original film or the franchise in general. I like Freddy sometimes, but not here and not like this.

Just don't judge the film based off the horrible dvd artwork it's getting overseas, it's trying to ride off the 300 wave even though the film is about the opposite of something like 300. Mads Mikkelsen plays a warrior back around 1000AD who escapes years of captivity and joins up with these Christian Vikings who are headed to the holy land. That's about as far as I can go into the film without spoiling anything. I've heard some people say it has a lot of Tarkovsky influence, which I can get behind, but I also really got a strong Apocalypse Now vibe, especially in the 2nd half. It's really not what I was expecting though and it's defiantly a love/hate kind of film. It has a great atmosphere and the cinematography is astounding. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the 2nd half though, interesting stuff.

Just don't judge the film based off the horrible dvd artwork it's getting overseas, it's trying to ride off the 300 wave even though the film is about the opposite of something like 300. Mads Mikkelsen plays a warrior back around 1000AD who escapes years of captivity and joins up with these Christian Vikings who are headed to the holy land. That's about as far as I can go into the film without spoiling anything. I've heard some people say it has a lot of Tarkovsky influence, which I can get behind, but I also really got a strong Apocalypse Now vibe, especially in the 2nd half. I'm intrigued by the backlash against The Secret in Their Eyes. It's the kind of safe, conventional foreign movie that wins Oscars and which casual moviegoers are willing to pay to see (in Montreal, it's playing on five screens, which is unusual for a movie that's not in French or English). It's not a great film, and reading Ebert's four-star rave in which he inevitably calls it "a real movie"--even "a rebuke to formula films"!--you almost feel embarrassed for the guy. It's definitely overrated, but I don't think it's a bad film.

It was amusing, not much else...that's saying a lot, because it is so ridiculously easy to make me laugh. I am a giggle fiend, and this movie only had moderate giggles. I thought the trailer of Piranha 3-D was way funnier.Fair enough, really. And Piranha in 3D will be hilarious. Judging from the previews, it appears to be something of a parody in addition to featuring plenty of gore. Which means its more like the 1978 Joe Dante version, and I'm hoping that's the case.

It also pales in comparison to the other Cusack/Pink productions Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. They should have hired Stephen Frears to give it some soul.

I did like the ending even if it (probably self-consciously) stole liberally from the ending of Back to The Future.

You're right on all accounts, especially the fact that it pales in comparison to the other Cusack/Pink films, but I thought its aims were much different in that it was mimicking 80's T&A films, and not necessarily looking for much of a heart. For me, it had enough laughs to give it a positive rating, despite its many flaws.

The first three are more "meh" than anything. Iron Man 2 is mildly diverting, but amounts to little more than marketing for yet another Marvel film. MacGruber made me laugh a bit, but it's ultimately simply crass and uninspired. Prince of Persia is not nearly as bad as others led me to believe, but it still turned out exactly how I imagined a Prince of Persia movie would, which is to say it resembles merely films of similar ilk and not at all Prince of Persia. I enjoyed [REC] 2 more than the original, as I mentioned in its thread. I did not enjoy Survival of the Dead, the worst of Romero's zombie efforts.

It's far too obvious and schematic in its writerly conceits (e.g., the two photos that give the film its title, and the overarching structure of a haunting crime used to explore two men who can't let go of the past and their undying loves, all leading to one learning a valuable lesson, seizing the day and embracing his love in the present) and its plot is driven by poor character development (with a central romance perpetually delayed seemingly only for the sake of the above scheme, and characters obsessed with a single crime for seemingly no reason). In addition, that plot becomes increasingly ridiculous after a lame, wholly unbelievable (or at least it struck me as such) interrogation scene. On the plus side, it's inoffensive enough, and it has a great footchase through a soccer stadium, with cinematography that immerses the viewer in the immense crowds and dank hallways.
