Reel Injun - mild yay

Not the best documentary I've seen kicking around on late night Canadian television (which, for some reason, is now getting a very small US release, albeit a big enough one to be acknowledged by the New York Times), but it's such a fascinating subject the movie almost can't help but be interesting, despite biting off way more than it can possibly chew.

Watched 'Unthinkable' this weekend. Enjoyed it. I remember reading a criticism about it saying that the film is propaganda. It's more of a criticism of the moral Western high-ground. The movie had nothing to do with justifying the 'war on terror'. T'was more about the inherent human capability for evil.

Best part is SLJ line "What i'm about to do is ... UNTHINKABLE!" LOL so cheese.

I knew the film did its job when it actually had me sitting there saying, "TORTURE THE FREAKING CHILDREN ALREADY!!!!"

The Karate Kid - nay
Winter's Bone - yay

The Banksy film is hilarious, best comedy of the year so far. The Karate Kid is amusingly watchable - and seriously, Jackie Chan is better here than he has been in some previous films of late, even in bad scenes - but it's ultimately just a series of eye rolling cliches. Winter's Bone is a compelling and wonderfully textured film with some great performances. I enjoyed it, but I admit there are some elements of the film I'm not really sure what to do with.

It should be said that the short preceding it, Day & Night, was superb. It's far better than anything that followed, and one of the best things Pixar has ever done.

The system seems to be working. I might just separate mainstream from indie movies next year so it's easier to navigate. Maybe once a movie hits four viewers or more it'll be "mainstream." I swear there's a few movies on this list that don't even exist.

This isn't Siskel & Ebert, fool. There are varying degrees of like/dislike, so I'm all for knowing if someone is on-the-fence or outright loved/hated it. I'd rather see a film that has 3 strong yay's and a mild nay over something with 3 mild yay's and a strong nay. I'd prefer the PRO-pro-mixed-con-CON, but that's a little more work. But hell, I'm annoyed that Netflix has no rating between "didn't like it" and "liked it", so maybe I'm too picky. :)

Add NAY and YAY for EXTREME feelings. This wouldn't change the % thingy and would simply allow everyone to see if a film is just barely liked or outright loved, etc. Of course, a scoring system (5-YAY, 4-yay, 2-nay, 1-NAY) would be even better to get an average score and I'd be willing to help calculate and all that jazz.

Definitely. It feels very much like the work of a rising auteur—imaginative and original settings, flashy editing and style all around, and beautiful raw emotion. Every performance was incredible too, though some more so than others.

Derek, I like your idea of going 1-4, the only problem with it is that a good amount of these ratings are simply from people's signatures, or whatever they type in, and I guess if it's yay or nay that way. And even with that I'm wrong. To spread it out on even more points would be even more difficult.

Really? I mean, no offense or anything, I appreciate your work here, but is it really so difficult to add a few more categories for each movie? Unless I'm missing some step in the process. (Oh, and I would think you'd also want to include a 'mixed' option, right?)

Predators - yay

The former is difficult to enjoy on account of being a fan of the show, the biggest problem being the action. That is one of the show's greatest and surprising strengths. The action in the movie is largely uninspiring. Also, they ruined the Jason Isaacs character, among others. Predators, however, is a lot of fun. It has been a generally miserable summer for fantasy and action, so maybe this "yay" is purely relative to that. I don't know. It's certainly still a far cry from the original, but I enjoyed it all the same. Brodyquest did a good job carrying the film.

Who wants to see a movie about a nice, non-threatening, middle-class, monogamous lesbian couple who are just like "everyone else" (i.e., nice, non-threatening, middle-class, monogamous straight couples)? I think I'd rather re-watch The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant instead. Then again, I'm basing this entirely on the misleading trailer and the first paragraph of Roger Ebert's review.

They're not monogamous throughout the film. Of course it's no Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, but I also don't find the comparison particularly meaningful. So because Fassbinder made a great film about lesbians, you're uninterested in seeing any film about lesbians that doesn't look as good as that one?

He watched it again this month as well, so maybe Sicinski has orchestrated a resurgence of popularity. Considering his fondness for horror, I'd have figured you'd be on a similar wavelength. Yup, would imagine rating it lower had I not... but when taking into account that it's his final film, it takes on a great deal of poignancy (esp. the final scenes). But it's as formally exquisite as anything I've seen from him; hard to think of another filmmaker who can make the sight of characters entering and disappearing from the frame feel like a dramatic spectacle.

Maybe my mood at the time was not charitable. But its tone - cutesy and twee one second, maudlin and mawkish the next, the numerous hint-hint-ALLEGORY! moments, in addition to an absent narrative had me checking my watch endlessly. I suppose there's something to be said for a film that manages to evoke Bicentennial Man and In a Year of 13 Moons in equal measure, but overall, blech. That dandelion scene near the end actually made me chortle aloud.

From Paris With Love - yay

Noticed Soul Kitchen is getting a theatrical release next month, so put me down for a yay. Good film, humorous and charming and a lot of fun. A film like Head-On resonates with greater emotional depth, and is a much more visceral experience... perhaps I'm just saying it's the more memorable film for me... but Soul Kitchen is a welcome addition to Akin's filmography. I might even prefer it to the clumsy contrivances of The Edge of Heaven.

I rented From Paris With Love last week. As far as action films go, one of the better ones I've seen this year, but that's mostly for the carefree attitude and John Travolta's I-don't-even-know-what-to-do-with-this performance. It's a fun movie, but action scenes are decent at best, usually amusing but lacking in any formal interest (best scene is probably when they keep the action off screen, and we just watch dead bodies fall down a staircase). Acceptable, but not as good as Taken.

Rowland
07-28-2010, 10:09 PM
action scenes are decent at best, usually amusing but lacking in any formal interest While the action sequences are hardly spectacular, Morel has a fantastic compositional eye, and more importantly, he knows how to frame and edit his action sequences together so that they are kinetic without sacrificing coherence. They flow with a keen formal sophistication, and without any flashy mannerisms, which is an undervalued pleasure when you have hacks like Carnahan fucking us in the collective eye sockets. I also found its politics thornier than anticipated, and yes, it's probably the most charming, loosest performance Travolta has given in I dunno how long. Oh, and it clocks in at 90 minutes - how hard is that to accomplish, bloated Hollywood blockbusters?

Stay Puft
07-28-2010, 10:31 PM
Indeed, its brevity is its greatest strength.

Regarding the action, I'm thinking of stuff like the warehouse shootout or whatever with all the mannequins and such. Lots of tight framing and "random corridor" style choreography, and then we get that medium shot of John Travolta in the center of the frame, turning and pointing at different bad guys off screen, debris or whatever floating through the air, intercut with reaction shots. It was as silly as something like Bruce Willis rolling around on the ground in Die Hard 2: Die Harder. It didn't do anything for me. That was probably the weakest action scene in the movie.

Some of it is pretty good, like the staircase bit, and John Travolta disarming random thugs was amusing, and so on. It's not bad overall, decent entertainment, I enjoyed the film, but like I said, I thought Taken was the better film. It has the advantage of a relentless emotional throughline, and the style there served it well.

Super unambitious and mediocre. However, I will give it this: For a mainstream American release, there are a surprising number of sustained medium and long shots, so that the actors, particularly the three leads, are given room to act with their whole bodies, rather than just with their faces. As a result, the movie is more subtle than I feel like it should've been based on how thinly conceived the characters are. That's not to say that Cholodenko is a master of complex stagings, and some of her framings are downright weird (there's one shot where the sink faucet seems to dominate the actors, who are way in the background, simply because it's right in the foreground center, to the point where I'm thinking: What's the faucet going to do?), but for the most part, she does a good job of staying out of her own way.

Many of the "indie quirk" flourishes struck me as trying too hard, as did the relentlessly sneering tone, but the ensemble was consistently inspired even when the material wasn't, the second half is surprisingly dark in how it sketches Cera's character as something of a stalker willing to manipulate and even drug people to achieve his aims, which is itself an effectively stylized representation of obsessive first love, and Cera, despite his overexposure, is hilarious as the alter ego.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that I thought The Hangover was funnier, hence the quotes. Ahh, that makes more sense. I somehow interpreted it as you saying it WAS funnier, but in a more conventional sense, which doesn't make sense at all. :)

What? He's a terrible writer. This is made even worse by the masturbatory rambling done by his mary sue characters who seem to say the word "deep" a lot.I'm gonna take eternity's side on this one. Inception is pretty ambitious structurally, but like half of the movie consists of characters explaining the plot to each other.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird - nay

Haha, what the hell was that? This thing belongs next to convoluted blockbusters like Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia, etc. But it gets even worse when there's a giant chase sequence across a desert that just never ends and then it recycles Leone's film for the showdown. What the hell. It's a shame, too, because I thought a lot of it was fun. There are some amusing action bits and fun choreography, but even that starts to wear thin as it relies too often on cheap special effects to create the illusion of unbroken or sophisticated single takes. Whatever. Stupid film.

Wait, what about this movie was Hartley-esque?

It's obviously not a Hartley clone, but the star-crossed lovers, lovable yet unstable male protagonist, ornate dialogue, off-kilter pacing and combination of near-fantasy level romance meeting real world consequences certainly gives it the feel of early Hartley (Unbelievable Truth, Trust and Surviving Desire especially). I don't like it nearly as much as any of those, especially the latter two, which are my favorite of Hartley's films, but I definitely see some similarities.

Considering how talented Nolan is (both writing and directing wise), you should save your venom for directors who actually suck.

It has some really entertaining moments... it's just what comes between them that's a little less thrilling.

Greenberg making $180 million is even more surprising. Imagine how surprised Noah Baumbach will be when he hears these numbers!

I...I don't see it. His direction is commonplace and his writing is well...I don't mean to repeat myself. But enough about that.
