I love Egoyan, but this gets worse as it goes along. There's enough dreamy Egoyan-y things going on it for it not to be total garbage (especially in the first half), but by the end I was left going "really Atom? You are going to end it like that?"
It does look nice, Egoyan's commentaries are always worth hearing, and hot lesbian scenes with Seyfried and Moore, so there's that.

It's excessively long, mostly uninteresting... and slightly confusing. The fight scenes are obviously spectacular, but in a film that's 2 hours and 20 minutes, less than a quarter is actually devoted to martial arts.

I loved it, probably my favourite film I've seen this year. It's so dynamic, not only in terms of it's content, but in the twists and turns of the narrative. I don't think I've ever seen a film use a "red herring" quite so effectively. I suppose it can be called a "torture porn", but really, it really elevates the tropes of the genre and create an absurd and twisted story of obsession.

Looking over my yays and nays, I'm (perhaps surprisingly) in the majority most of the time. The only films where I'm in the minority yay column are Please Give, which I only sort of liked and which hasn't held up well for me over time, and The Secret in Their Eyes, which I still say is a strong, if very commercial, policier, so I don't really understand the hate for that one. (Were people expecting Lucrecia Martel? I dunno.) In the minority nay column are The Kids Are All Right (nothing really wrong with it, but too unambitious and bland for me to really get behind), and Shutter Island, which is also a mild nay for me, because it starts out well and then, like the protagonist, goes to pieces at the end.
It's an even vote on both The Good, the Bad, and the Weird and The Secret of Kells, with myself in the nay column on both counts. With the former, I can chalk the support for it up to the fact that there's a certain caste of cinephiles who will get behind any Asian genre film, no matter how inept or stupid (let's call them the Battle Royale posse). As for the latter, it got good reviews and the animation was certainly attractive, but I felt like I'd seen this exact story with the conflict between a stern and a chill father-figure a million times before, and I liked it better when it was called Platoon (not that it was necessarily any more grownup then). Also, for a movie that's only seventy minutes long, it seemed to drag on forever.
The person whose taste seems to me the most suspect is Melville, who nayed Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Ghost Writer, and Un prophète, which are all in my top five for the year so far, and which I'm happy to say he's wildly in the minority on. I'm also seemingly out of step with Briare, although I would counter that he's simply out of step with worthwhile cinema, yaying Chloe (although that was a close call for me as well, as like Shutter Island, it only falls apart towards the end), while naying Exit Through the Gift Shop and Greenberg (again wildly in the minority). That's not to say the majority is always right, or that there is such a thing as a right or wrong opinion, but even if they're not really your cup of tea (Briare yayed Alice in Wonderland and Ramona and Beezus, two films I couldn't imagine subjecting myself to, but hey, if that's his thing, who am I to judge?), if some one is unable to appreciate these films purely as works of craftsmanship, I have to seriously doubt this person's lucidity. I mean, Inception isn't really my thing, but I appreciate the craftsmanship up to a point. Also, if The Ghost Writer is, as Briare claims, only a so-so political thriller elevated by the style and performances, where does that leave Chloe, a so-so apolitical thriller without any style but a darn good performance by Julianne Moore? And as for the suggestion that Polanski is trying to recapture his glory days, when weren't his glory days? The Tenant? Bitter Moon? The Pianist? Similarly, his objections to Greenberg that it lacks "depth" and fails to understand what makes the protagonist tick are, if not objectively wrong, then seriously wrong-headed. There's no big mystery here, no depths to explore: He can either choose not to accept responsibility and go to Australia, or pick up his girlfriend from her abortion. It's as simple as that. That's the plot which, according to Briare, the film barely has. Greenberg is mean and "obnoxious" to the nice girl because he doesn't want to accept responsibility, so he pushes her away. He's supposed to be obnoxious. And what's so unrealistic about that? There's lots of obnoxious people walking around. Anyway, I think if I were that out of step with the majority, I'd at least reconsider my responses and try to see what other people see in the film, and for the record, I sometimes think I underrated Shutter Island and would probably give it a second look.

Ramona was a series I liked as a kid, the movie does complete justice to the source material, its a kids film free of pop culture references or potty humor and is wonderfully acted and imagined. It also helps that its not totally embarassing to watch, as is the norm for kids films these days. Alice was a borderline yay, I can recognize its flaws [of which there are many] but being the sucker that I am for that sort of production design I got what I needed out of it. Chloe is another one that is a borderline yay, though months on I'd probably classify that a nay as well. There's not a whole lot to it. Speaking of which, I had issues with The Kids... and its third act mostly, but I'm still trying to work out the issues I had with it.
If I go see a movie like Greenberg, I'm prepared to not necessarily like the guy who's portrayed in the movie but when he's as obnoxiously annoying as Roger Greenberg was, I'm sorry but its kind of hard to give a shit what the motivation was behind it.
My issue with Exit Through... is that a, it could probably use another viewing and perhaps you guys could help me with this that the tone seems to be all over the place. Who is Banksy as an artist? He tried cinema, that didn't entirely work out in his favor [as first I suppose] but the portion of the movie where his art gallery opens, is the film supposed to be mocking him, is he that blind to the unoriginality of his own work or is it his own version of self criticism? That and at the time it seemed kind of inconsequential.

That and at the time it seemed kind of inconsequential. It sounds like you're confusing Thierry Guetta (aka Mr. Brainwash)--that is the French guy with the mustache--with Banksy, the British guy in the shadows. Anyway, the tone seems clear enough to me: Banksy has edited Guetta's own footage in order to make him look as ridiculous as possible. With regards to being inconsequential, I guess it's a matter of what you're interested in, and as some one who's interested in the art world, I thought it was neat to see a documentary that bears witness to this particular moment in art history when street art went from being this underground, anti-capitalist movement to just another commodity in the mainstream art world. (Any who, here's what I wrote about the film (http://chuck-a-luck.blogspot.com/2010/05/ballet-is-bitch-that-never-sleeps.html) for my blog back in May.)
As far as finding Greenberg so unbearably obnoxious, I guess it's a subjective thing (I'd much rather see a movie about some one who's really mean than, you know, The Kids Are All Right), but I don't know what he does here that's so beyond the pail, especially considering that Norman Bates, Travis Bickle, and Daniel Plainview are among the most beloved movie characters of all time.

Oops, my bad. Thats right, Banksy was the english guy, my mistake. Looking at it from the point of view that Banksy was trying to make Mr Brainwash look as ridiculous as possible [was it he who commented near the films' close that Brainwash's work didn't have an original bone in its body?]. It seems now its like a movie I enjoy talking about more than like.

What the dillio? It's been 6 months since I saw it, but the thing, the only real recollection, that I can still recall is how bland everything was about the film. I watched this a few days after watching his fantastic Journey to the Beginning of the World, and I was left wanting for so much more. I guess that a filmmaker can't be as great as when he was a young, energetic 87 year-old.

For instance, the hero needs his uncle's permission to marry; he at one point takes a job in Cape Verde, hinting at Portugal's colonial past; and when he goes to kiss the girl, de Oliveira cuts away to their feet. In every stylistic choice, you can feel that this is the work of a hundred year old man.

A Prophet - mild yay, but it's a bit overrated. That's gotta be the least useful, laziest criticism ever. Also, anyone who likes Inception (myself included) is hereby banned from ever saying that another movie is overrated ever again. I mean, if we're even going to consider the possibility that a stylistically clunky, exposition-fest of a movie which takes place entirely in its writer-director's head is one of the year's most impressive commercial releases (The Ghost Writer and Un prophète are not only vastly superior in terms of craftsmanship, mood, acting, and visual storytelling, but actually take place in something vaguely resembling the real world), then in the interest of not appearing utterly ridiculous, we should forever ban the phrase "overrated" for this forum for all eternity. In other words, this year's given us the overrated movie to end all talk of overrated movies, so if you're one of those people who goes into a film expecting it to be a masterpiece due to the hype, and then come out disappointed that it's only near-flawlessly executed and consistently gripping as storytelling for the better part of three hours, unfolding an enormously complex, Godfather-like crime saga (sans the classy 30s trappings derived from The Conformist, or any sense that the criminal characters are somehow noble--the two most dubious qualities of Coppola's film), then I'm sorry, you need to shut fuck up.
baby doll
08-15-2010, 08:36 AM
Incidentally, anyone looking to deconstruct that rant at all closely will probably note the inherent contradiction of me calling some one out for using "overrated" as a criticism, and then going on to say that Inception is overrated. The difference for me is that I don't use the fact of Inception being overrated (the new 2001?! Really, people?) as a slam against it. Of course it's overrated, and I knew that going in, but I still liked the film for its structure, and for being moderately suspenseful as storytelling (though that said, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece or nothing).

OK, first of all, I enjoyed the film. It's a good, solid crime thriller. But considering the amount of praise laid upon it in some quarters, I did feel a bit let down. One of my pet peeves of film criticism in general (or lazy film criticism I should say, since most of the better critics are more mature than that) is that 'gritty' 'realistic' = good, or more honest or whatever. As if a movie like The Wizard of Oz is less valuable than, I dunno, Italian Neorealism or Bresson or something.
A Prophet is just as plotty and exposition heavy as Inception, it's just crouched in docudrama, handheld, gritty style (which is a 'style' make no mistake). It also seems a bit HBO TV to me. It reminded me a lot of "Oz" or "The Wire," which isn't a bad thing, but there are still some small minded people that might find a French FILM to be inherently better than American TV. Not to mention, I found the plot trajectory to be rather predictable. I mean did we not know who was going to wind up on top and who was going to be cut down to size by the end of the film? We've all seen the Godfather right?

We've all seen the Godfather right?First of all, I think The Wizard of Oz is less valuable than one of the masterpieces of Italian Neo-Realism, and especially Bresson (who isn't a realist), but that's a matter of taste. And while there's definitely a lot of exposition in Un prophète, there's certainly far less than there was in Inception; I certainly didn't feel like half the movie consisted of characters explaining the plot to each other, and I think it communicates a lot more information visually. Still, point taken.
Now as for you major complaint, that the film's handheld style is meant to denote realism, I think part of what's interesting about the film is that Audiard subverts this in a number of ways, first because one of the characters is a ghost who predicts the future, but also through Audiard's employment of silent movie techniques (masking the edges of the frame, the use of onscreen text, expressionist dream sequences). And even if the overall plot trajectory is somewhat familiar, on a scene-to-scene basis, the film is nothing short of masterful. I mean, the whole way that the first murder is built up to (very patiently), and the way it plays out (very messy), is just brilliant storytelling, and the whole movie has this wonderful novelistic sweep.

The ending is dramatically preposterous (passing along the note, wtf), but it's so stylishly executed I don't even care. Awesome movie. From the first sequence and on, this thing is a well crafted, finely tuned, expertly staged mystery thriller. Good performances all around, too. Exceptional entertainment.
I watched one of the special features afterwards and was stunned to see how much of the film was accomplished with green screens. I usually notice this stuff, but the extent of the work here escaped me. Kudos to the filmmakers, this thing is well done.

I'm perplexed at all the support the Other Guys is getting.
At the same time, aside from people maybe not liking Wahlberg or the general plot of it (both of things I had problems with myself), I'm finding it very hard to step outside of my own great time watching it to see exactly what so many disliked about it. I don't see how its approach to comedy or even the general hit-miss ratio of the jokes ends up all that different from how Step Brothers or Anchorman play (with Talladega Nights being the work of theirs I more or less find to be the dud).
But it's comedy, it's subjective, and when you have a movie like this that puts so much stock in how funny it is above all else, I can see that making those not as on-board with it frustrated from pretty early on

It's the way I view Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers. All three of those movies worked because of the situation the characters were in, AND the characters stupidity in their roles. In the Other Guys, it's less of a unrealistic comedy as it takes its self more serious with the plot (with the exception of the opening scene) and relies more on Wahlberg in the times where Ferrell has exhausted us where as in the previous three movies there's plenty of characters that we give our attention to. Wahlberg's character is stupid. His insults against Will were stupid, the ballet scene was stupid (and irrelevant) and the jokes are much more miss than hit. All three of McKays movies are better than this.

What? Why?As horror-themed remakes are concerned, watching the curiously overrated Piranha 3D the other day, with its sardonic satire, strained pseudo-camp, and joyless meting out of money shots, made me look back fondly at the comparatively straight-played schlock and spirited flamboyance of The Wolfman, which isn't particularly good (my Yay is barely that), but I've decided in retrospect that its modest delights have lingered enough to justify my similarly modest support.

Eh, it only has brief flashes of the flavor or feeling that makes him such an interesting filmmaker. Fun if you're in the mood for this sort of thing, but really it's just him spinning his wheels and, from what I've read, he was trying to make a very commercial movie, anyway. Lot of empty camera acrobatics and a narrative that almost goes out of its way to hit on familiar notes. Basically, for a movie about soul that has "It's Your Thing" by the Isley Brothers playing over its end credits, it's about as inventive and ambitious as it could possibly be

Saw this last year, mild yay for me. Shitty characters, lovely lead, aesthetically top-notch.Ehh, lovely lead, but also remarkably uninteresting and seemingly monosyllabic, and aesthetically I found it clean in its observational naturalism but formally indifferent. Otherwise, what narrative there is I'd predicted without fail ten minutes in, leaving over an hour of ponderous next-to-nothingness as I waited for the film to catch up with me and hit its tidy, largely banal beats, with little in the way of engaging form, character, or theme to distract. And really, a rooftop birdcage? So yeah, I don't get some of the love I've seen for this one at all.

If you're basing your love of John Cameron Mitchell on anything he has previously directed, written, starred in, sang, created, or drew, it's likely you'll be just as disappointed. It's more Lindsay-Abaire, who adapted the screenplay as well. It's so blandly polished that it's hard to feel any impact, and nothing is particularly distinguished or transcendent in its story of grieving parents. Mitchell is nowhere to be seen here--there's hardly any signs of his refreshing creativity.

Mitchell is nowhere to be seen here--there's hardly any signs of his refreshing creativity.
Bummer. I'll still see it out of loyalty's sake, but sadly, this does not surprise me as it reflects my previous experiences with Lindsay-Abaire.

To be fair, Nick's opinion on the film is in the extreme minority. It's gotten raves out of Toronto including Kidman's performance.

I am in the minority, but I'm certainly not alone. Also, if the main impetus to see it is JCM (which mine was, mostly), then don't expect it to dazzle. It's brutally mediocre. Kidman is fine, and Eckhart is awful.
