When the similar thread for 2008 came up, I was saddened to realize that I couldn't remember many things I'd watched. This thread is my idea to make it easy for me to answer that question come next January.

The purpose of this thread is to post your top ten films that you've seen for the first time this year, re-posting it as often as you wish throughout the year.

Jen gave me this one for Christmas a few years back, and we STILL haven't watched it.

We really should get on that, I guess.Funny, I owned it for a few years before watching it as well. I particularly appreciated how Mizoguchi created a world that I felt was playing out before my eyes, instead of just being a film; and it really captured the spirit mythology found in classic Japanese literature.

The first one is great, the second one (After the Thin Man) is brilliant, and then I feel the series gets stale.

Nah, you're right. Perhaps I was thinking less space because you wouldn't be quoting the new one and posting the new list in addition to that? Perhaps I'm retarded? Both are distinct possibilities.

Repping for ratings is a dangerous precedent to set; I expect rep from you every time a rating of mine is + or - 15% from your rating.

Un Flic for example.

Don't get me wrong -- I found La Jetée intellectually stimulating and cleverly put together. Marker's voice is a unique one in cinema. It's not warm and personal, nor is it cold and impersonal: it's cold and personal; which is an approach I think lends itself more appropriately to the sci-fi oriented material of La Jetée rather than the philosophical photo-diary observations of Sans Soleil.

1. Frost/Nixon (Ron Howard, 2008)
2. The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir, 1939)

I don't know about mad, but I'm intrigued at how any Ron Howard film could be better than one of the best films ever.

I don't know. I personally believe that there is no way of comparing the two films. They're different movies in different eras...it's really hard to explain.

Hell, I didn't go into Frost/Nixon to compare it to Rules of the Game, which I liked a lot by the way. I do want to rewatch it though.

EDIT: I echo Raiders's thoughts. Rename General Film Discussion "Bizarro World".

Jeez it's weird how many films we saw for the first time around the same time.

Transsiberian I was pretty disappointed with, because it just seemed so...average. It had some decent acting and Brad Anderson certainly knows how to compose a taut thriller, but I just felt like it was very colour-by-number.

Wolf was great, yes. I saw this a few weeks ago and it could possibly make my list as well. Its message is a little on the nose, but the dialogue is wonderful and I thought it was a great twist on our long-time notions of what makes a werewolf.

Body Snatchers I have not seen, but in December I saw Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the '78 version) and it may have been the best film I saw from all of last year.

Loved Slumdog. Maybe I'm nuts though, but I'm still saddened that Gran Torino didn't get Oscar sanctified.

After Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions, Sunshine, and this; I think Boyle can make just about any kind of film well. I haven't seen A Life Less Ordinary or The Beach though...

Transsiberian I was pretty disappointed with, because it just seemed so...average. It had some decent acting and Brad Anderson certainly knows how to compose a taut thriller, but I just felt like it was very colour-by-number.

I thought the drug trafficking stuff wasn't terribly interesting, but Jessie's guilt over the whole Carlos situation was compelling and involving. Emily Mortimer did a hell of a good job.

Interestingly, my top two films are films that would otherwise be "good" were it not for the excellent performances by the female leads, which really elevate the material.

Wolf was great, yes. I saw this a few weeks ago and it could possibly make my list as well. Its message is a little on the nose, but the dialogue is wonderful and I thought it was a great twist on our long-time notions of what makes a werewolf.

I didn't think it great by any stretch; I'm just filling out my top ten until I eventually see better movies.

Body Snatchers I have not seen, but in December I saw Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the '78 version) and it may have been the best film I saw from all of last year.

I really dug the remake, but I thought that whole plantation sequence at the end was contrived action for its own sake. It seemed tangential to the story. But it otherwise matched the original version.

I, Robot entertained me thoroughly, featured fantastic special effects work and a charming-as-usual performance from Will Smith.

Rosemary's Baby was an interesting film that ultimately failed to evoke fear due to some serious problems including an anticlimactic misfire of an ending.

No, I keep it in my Middle School locker, since I'm stuck in a time people wore slap bracelets and jelly sandals and rented VHS tapes of widely released films. ;)

Enjoying a relatively successful television career, having significant roles in Commander in Chief, Eli Stone, and She Spies, the latter of which is an underrated satire.

GB: Spectres of the Spectrum

Had to make a tough decision between losing Spectres of the Spectrum and The Wrestler. Everything on here is a solid B+ or better now. So I've initiated a "GB" or "got bumped" list so I can reconsider things from time to time.

It pleases me greatly that a lot of people have been catching up with Peeping Tom lately. Amazing movie. Really a shame that it pretty much ended Powell's career.

Seriously? You've seen it and it's good? That's a relief. I've been frantically reading the graphic novel and getting kind of excited about seeing it on Friday.

Yeah, it's great. Snyder jumbles a lot of dialogue together and sometimes films it out of order, but it's pretty damn faithful. It's just a cool ambitious project that is likely to fly way over the general public's head.
