Not used to seeing such an unbiased (but not totally) documentary. Can't wait to see the sequel.

Sequel was good. Didn't rock me to the core like the first doc though. And that John Byers is probably the creepiest person I've ever seen.

Chaplin. Really?

What did you like so much?

I thought it was solidly made and very moving about one of the greatest actors ever. I don't hold it in super high esteem, or anything, but better than everything else I've seen thus far this year, which is roughly 30 new films.

I can understand it being thought better than almost all of the other films on your list. But Paths of Glory? That I can't understand.

While I liked Chaplin's first few scenes as he arrives into Hollywood, I didn't see anything that separates it from your average biopic.

Everything after 4 are all very flawed, but all exceptional movies.

OUT: Tokyo Sonata, License to Live
IN: Inglourious Basterds, Trouble Every Day

The Vivre se vie drop I don't quite understand myself. It's not that I think of the film any less, but a lot of it has just left my memory and I'm sure if I re-watch it, it'll jump back up again. The boisterous and impertinently cerebral, in color pleasures of Contempt and Nouvelle Vague are just sticking with me longer.

As someone formerly known as fasozupow, I should comment on Chinese Roulette. While I don't hate it, it is probably my least favorite Fassbinder. I think he got so caught up in his complex visual ideas -- and they are very interesting -- that he lost sight of all else. I found his characters oddly unengaging.

I'm interested in Jost nonetheless, but a ringing endorsement from you is enough for me to seek it out.

It might not be until a few days from now as I'm getting ready to drive down to Ashland tomorrow morning for Thanksgiving weekend.

He's delusional a bit. It's a solid, no-frills western (as are all of Boetticher's), but for me it pales next to Boetticher's Ride Lonesome which is even tighter and features a wallop of an ending.

Other than the ones from your top 100 (plus Outer Space and Love Exposure), I didn't realize you were a big fan of those movies. Have you seen The Devil?

I'll need to give Possession another go to decide just how impressive it is, but I loved it for Adjani's feral performance, the acrobatic camerawork, and how potently it evokes the turbulent emotions of marital disfunction uses horror movie tropes. I'm pretty sure it'll be a top 100 film on second viewing.

I infer from that that you haven't seen The Devil. I highly recommend it. The camerawork is even more acrobatic, and it's got feral performances and turbulent emotions spewing all over the place, though it's more sprawling, lacking the dense personal core of Possession.

Zulawski rated:

Possession - 10
The Devil - 10
Szamanka - 8
The Most Important Thing: Love - 7.5

I should probably warn you that the Zulawski films and Serene Velocity are definitely not for everybody. But still, check them out if you get a chance (unless it's a chance to see the shortened cut of Possession, which apparently should be avoided); we need some more Zulawski fans around here.

In 2009, I made a point of seeing one movie for each decade, and after finishing one round, I'd go back and do it again. In the end, I saw 20 (or more) movies from every decade.

I'm not sure I want to continue this project into 2010. There are hardly any movies from the 30's left on my Netflix queue, I don't want to add more movies just to fill out the decade. You will note that although I saw 20 movies from the 30's in 2009, not one of them made my top 40 list that I posted above. I want to give a fair chance to all time periods, but it seems like the 30's just don't speak to me.

I think I'm going to re-watch some old favorites in 2010. There are some great ones I haven't seen in ages.

1. All That Jazz(1979)-100
2. In a Lonely Place(1950)-100
3. Le Samouraï(1967)-100
4. The Wrestler(2008)-98
5. Bob Roberts(1992)-97
6. Sleeper(1973)-97
7. Gone Baby Gone(2007)-97
8. Up(2009)-97
9. Chimes at Midnight(1965)-95
10. Bonnie and Clyde(1967)-95

Finally another 100-I've only given out three on the year. I should look at the past couple of previous years where I've kept track and see if this is an all time low or something.Looking over this list, I noted that once again it features too many 60s and 70s movies, plus a bit heavy on the 2000s side. For next year, I may aim to explore more directors, but also focus a bit more on the Golden Age of Hollywood (1920s-1950s), plus viewing more from the 80s and the silent era. Still, a damn good list overall.

1. Culloden
2. Marnie
3. The Piano
4. Inglourious Basterds
5. Serpent's Path
6. Nouvelle Vague
7. Stuck
8. Contempt
9. Vivre se vie
10. Trouble Every Day

1. Culloden
2. Marnie
3. Inglourious Basterds
4. Fool for Love
5. The Piano
6. Two Lovers
7. W.R. - Mysteries of the Organism
8. Nouvelle Vague

Unrankable:

The Room (Tommy Wiseau, 2003)
2012 (Roland Emmerich, 2009)
New Moon (Chris Weitz, 2009)

Who would've thought that The Room would be the last movie I would see for the first time in 2009?

I love that somebody else found Observe and Report to be as terrible as I did - but, I'm a little weirded out by your ranking of Public Enemies and Moon. Just a little.
