Melville definitely was hitting his stride in the mid to late 60s. Le Samouraï is his best crime film I've seen, and probably just a shade below Army of Shadows as his best overall film. I don't know why I put off seeing it for so long. Perhaps subconsciously I was leaving myself something great to look forward to watching in Melville's filmography. Only a few left until I've seen all he did.

Me want to see. Bad. Any thoughts on this in comparison to his other works?

I don't think I can speak much to Jia's works. I have only seen his more recent efforts (Useless, 24 City, Cry Me a River). Which means River is his first work of "fiction" (insofar as we want to think of the first two as documentaries) that I have seen (I'm not going to count the fact that I watched a third of Platform, for example, but never finished it). Certainly, it is as formally accomplished as the other two "docs," and exhibits similar stylistic touches (long, contemplative shots, and a camera that sometimes "drifts" away from a subject to consider more periphery details - this actually being a significant structural and narrative device in Useless). And there's Tao Zhao, of course.

My initial impression is that it is a small, beautiful homage to Spring in a Small Town that, like Tian's remake, dislocates plot elements into a different time period to re-contextualize thematic material. There's something universal but also specifically cyclical that Jia does here with sadness, nostalgia, aging and frailty (I gather this from the juxtaposition of the last two settings, the boat on the river and the house on the lake). Moreso than Tian, he's creating a cinematic dialogue or bridge - like a reflection on Mu Fei's film, a ripple in time, characters who live in a contemporary setting and unknowingly/unconsciously drift through webs of Chinese history, culture, film, etc.

Am I making sense? I'm not sure what to say about it. It left a strong impression, though.

Big props for The Ninth Configuration, even if the Frost/Nixon score (especially opposed to Gran Torino) gives me shivers. Thanks in regards to "Configuration." And Frost/Nixon had better acting and a more interesting story than Grano Torino, hence the higher score. I've never really been a Ron Howard hater I guess, although granted I haven't seen a good deal from him and I've put off seeing A Beautiful Mind, which gets a lot of flack around these parts.

I'm not a hater (in fact, I'm probably one of the bigger fans of A Beautiful Mind left), I just found the movie pretty uninteresting, and thought it had a bit of a made-for-TV feel. Plus Clint = Better acting than all (Though Langella was good).

Plus Clint = Better acting than all (Though Langella was good).Okay, fair enough. As for Clint, while I can't agree with you that he was better than Sheen or Langella, he was pretty awesome. One of his best performances imo. And I'm just reminded that I actually have a write up for "Torino" that has yet to be posted. Partly because its not very good, partly because, well...I'm notorious procrastinator....

Yeah, but most people procrastinate on the work (writing a review) part. Not the getting credit (posting it) part.

Yeah, but most people procrastinate on the work (writing a review) part. Not the getting credit (posting it) part.I know. I'm that weird kind of procrastinator. I find it easier to actually write the damn thing down on paper instead of putting it on the computer and editting it, plus re-reading it to see if its actually any good. Perhaps I need my own editor :P

Few films have fascinated me to the degree that EWS has. The more I look at them, the more strongly I feel that Kubrick ended his career with two of his finest films.

And In The Realms... is one of the most beautiful, fascinating, and entrancing I've seen so far. Imagine cleaning out the room of an eccentric old janitor and discovering an illustrated 15,000+ page fantasy novel -- among other works -- that he'd left behind.

GONE: King Kong (71), Three Ages (73)

Despite being wildly melodramatic and stuffy in the beginning, Pandora's Box was a gem and the mix of Animal Collective and Brian Eno songs I watched it to was hypnotic (think of Brian Eno's Ambient 4: At Land with the Jack the Ripper scenes.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmm...tasty)

Of four high ranking silents I've seen in 2009, I watched them all with homemade scores:

Last Laugh with Birchville Cat Motel
The General with Brian Eno
Pandora's Box with AC/Eno
College with AC - Feels

they all turned out beautiful.

I found "Zoo" to be an exceptionally fascinating and beautifully filmed documentary. Critics who complain that they learned nothing about why a person would choose to have sex with a horse have largely missed the point, I think.

Danny Boyle currently holds the distinction of having two movies on this list. I've now seen three of his movies this year. Also this knocks Duck Soup off the list, thus ending its stay and meaning as of now only movies receiving a "95" and up will get a spot.

1. All That Jazz(1979)-100
2. The Wrestler(2008)-98
3. Bob Roberts(1992)-97
4. Sleeper(1973)-97

I know this wasn't directed at me, but it was a cute and interesting little "love" story. It essentially boils down attraction to its most basic degrees using merely a dot, a straight line and a squiggly line. I became a little exhausted with the narration which I guess was necessary to set it up, but I found Jones' animation clear and fantastic enough to do without it, but in general it is pretty terrific.

Does it have something to do with Flatland (the book?) Because I found the book both fascinating and exhausting.

Sort of, I guess. The short is based on an illustrated book of the same name that I believe was influenced by Flatland. I have not read either book so I couldn't say if they were at all similar.

Rowland, tell me something about this movie that'll make me want to watch it. I know nothing about it, and am both immensely attracted to and repulsed by its title. It's a masterpiece of short animation, employing an exuberantly experimental aesthetic to tell a simple love story in a manner most exhilarating, with a delightful surplus of dry wit (both visual and in its literate narration) and an unabashedly sophisticated sensibility that's never esoteric enough to alienate its target audience, as it stresses the importance of maximizing one's intellectual and creative potential while implicitly revealing the accessibility and ecstatic potential of both mathematics and avante-garde cinema to its impressionable younger viewers. Plus it's just charming as hell, which always helps.

First time, huh? Awesome. It's no wonder that Welles said:

"After dinner every night for about a month [during the filming of Citizen Kane], I'd run Stagecoach.... It was like going to school."It really is a beautiful picture, more rigorously composed than I'd anticipated, since my impression of John Ford had always been as more of a meat-and-potatoes sort of director. Some of it even appeared inspired by German expressionism. Otherwise, it's just a superbly judged piece on virtually every front, so I'm surprised by the middling responses it's received by many prominent posters around here.

You're not the only one, but my impression of the film was of an unimaginative, shrill shout-fest between irritating characters. There were many times when I wanted to turn off the film.

5. Tromeo and Juliet (masterpiece)

Really? I started watching it about 4 weeks ago and shut it off after about 15 minutes. Kind of a mixture of not working for me and not being my cup of tea. Maybe I should finish it.

I found the first 5 minutes of Citizen Toxie to be so offensive I couldn't get past it. The only Troma I've honestly liked (and actually loved) so far has been The Toxic Avenger.

I dunno, if I don't like a movie within the first fifteen minutes I typically don't like the rest of it. However, I can't not recommend finishing it, because I found it to be a very clever, very funny post-structuralist work about grand narratives and whatnot. Kind of like Van Sant's Psycho, only, you know, watchable. And it's hilarious, to boot.

But then, I also happen to have a lot of nostalgia for the '90s. That movie made me want to get pierced.

Yeah, maybe it's not worth spending more time. Most of my nostalgia is for the '70s (goddamn I love Dazed and Confused for instance). I also found Van Sant's Psycho very watchable.

Then again, I hate to leave movie's unwatched so I'll probably plug into it on instant watch some evening.

Welcome CO and rep for the Shellac av.

I love Shellac. Got into them through Big Black. Saw them play a couple weeks back. Probably one of the best shows I've ever witnessed. Played the perfect balance of more well known stuff and lesser know stuff. They pretty much killed it. Their performance of a song I didn't think much of beforehand, The End of Radio, was a standout.
