Just realized I do not have Jessie's Girl in my iTunes.

    This must be rectified.
I was so tempted to neg rep. My active loathing for that song is unparalleled.

God, if you get to hear Jessie's Girl count yourself lucky. I hear an 80s station that is purely new wave day after day.

The Cosmic Jokers - "Kinder des Alls"

A must for fans of ze krautrock/space rock variety. Plus, the band (/not band) has an hilariously awesome backstory...

    Quote Quoting RYM
The Cosmic Jokers were the Krautrock supergroup that never really was. The brainchild of Komische Musik label head honcho Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and Dieter Dierks, who decided to throw a series of acid-fuelled jam sessions at Dierks' studio over a period of months in 1973, bringing together the likes of Klaus Schulze and Manuel Göttsching of Ash Ra Tempel, and Jürgen Dollase and Harald Großkopf of Wallenstein.

The great cosmic joke, however, was that Kaiser secretly recorded these freewheeling space rock sessions and released them on Komische without any knowledge or consent of the artists, forgoing any royalties that may have been due. The records were withdrawn in 1975 following legal action by Schulze until performance rights were resolved, and the ever-increasing megalomaniac Kaiser was subsequently run out of the country, signalling the inevitable collapse of his recording empire.

Never heard of them, but in their wiki-page, it lists Hawkwind as a major influence so I guess they're space rock by association?

You've never heard Monster Magnet? They had one song that was huge. I saw them open for Rob Zombie back in high school, and the only thing they had in common with Hawkwind was naked ladies on stage, though theirs were strippers/hookers performing oral sex on each other. It was equal parts hilarious and disturbing.

    They are:

One of the best space rock albums of all time.

First song is 32 minutes long - epic.

    Word.

This should be listed as the definition of space rock:

Wow. Explain to me what they were doing with the song "Space Lord". Because it sucks. Hard. And every song they played before the Rob Zombie show sounded similar to that.

I think it would be safe to assume that you are not a Monster Magnet fan.

Space Lord is okay, nothing great, but I like it.

Dopes to Infinity - now this is a jam. The song and the album are both amazing.

But like most good space rock, MM songs should be listened to in context of the whole album, as they often build upon the previous songs and lay foundations for the subsequent songs.

Maybe I went it with a negative outlook, but "Space Lord" is such a generic rock song. It sounds like countless other songs that were playing on the radio at that time. And man were those guys sleazy at the show. The lead singer seemed like a Kid Rock clone, constantly grabbing his crotch and wearing a wife-beater. I'm not kidding when I say they brought women on the stage who stripped naked and performed oral sex on each other. Unsimulated. After that evening I wasn't too interested in exploring their discography. :P

I am, in no way, defending MM as some great band. I greatly prefer Farflung, Hawkwind (who also had naked dancers and looked like washed out white trash rockers), Pressurehead, Chrome, and other space rockers.

MM have released some very solid space rock albums though - including Dopes to Infinity, which is a classic, and should be listened to at least once by any fan of good rock 'n roll.

I dislike more than I like from the band, but I cannot deny their raw power, and when they're on, they're pretty freakin' sweet.

And yes, they are white trash.
