Thread: Video Games...Discuss Them

I remember EA Big put out a game early on in the PS2 cycle, called Freekstyle, which was billed as SSX with motorcycles. Boy, was that game a colossal disappointment. The Pure demo looks pretty cool, but I'm wary.
they did that with sleds too

they turned the original, awesome sledstorm for the ps1 into a piece of shit X-TREME version

they peaked with ssx tricky and nba street vol. 2

I played Resistance online yesterday for a few hours. Nothing like getting slaughtered over and over and over again.

However, it makes you proficient in the Bullseye gun rather quick!

I couldn't get into that multiplayer. Just not my thing to play FPS multiplayer on consoles.

I really do not understand this new Megaman game. If I wanted to play the same games I played in junior high and high school, I'd get out my NES, or fire up Nesticle, and play the originals.

Or, if I had a Wii, I'd buy them for the VC.

The sad truth is, most of these old games are just that - old. They rely on archaic game design and, IMO, they just aren't fun any more. They are also really ugly, with rampant slow down and flashing pixels because of the lack of memory in the hardware.

    I don't want this.

It's like being jazzed to have an 8-track installed in your new car.

People are celebrating this coming back on a modern system?

    Boggles my mind.

    Move forward, not backwards.

I guess it's just another example of me being totally out of sync with the Wii-generation of gamers.

I would love to see a new Megaman game similar in fashion to Viewtiful Joe, or New Super Mario Bros. or something. A kind of retro-future approach, one that builds upon nostalgia while working with the technological benefits of modern hardware and game design.

This is something I can get behind.

A new 8-bit game is not.

I thought it was the same old game? It's a new 8-bit Megaman?

    Yeah - it's Megaman 9.

I couldn't disagree more, Davis. While obviously not plainly analogous, the opposition to this sounds closer to me like complaining about somebody wanting to shoot a black and white film on film stock with no sound when beautiful color, high definition video (with a rocking DTS soundtrack) is available as an option.

And I don't know if this is something the "Wii generation" is clamoring for, as I think most would associate that term with younger types and those who are traditionally non-gamers. There was a simplicity of design that doesn't quite seem compatible with the strides that video game design has taken in recnet years.

There are a lot of Mega Man spin offs out there that do what you ask, but I've found everything in the franchise beyond the original NES games and the first couple Mega Man X games to be lacking.

Snake disagrees with the flow chart.

Megaman is a tired character and franchise. If I had my way, he would have retired years ago, and I haven't really enjoyed a MM game since the 16-bit era.

But I don't want to go back to that era, that's for sure. I had my fill of that in 1992, yo!

I'd rather see a current-gen remake of MM2 or something. Maybe a DS remake, like Square is so into these days.

I think it is Wii-gen thing because of its simplicity and its strict adherence to very gamey design. Nothing really wrong with this, it's just not my thing. I also think that the Wii-gen, or many gamers who love the Wii, are older Nintendo fans who have come back to gaming, and thus they have a lot of nostalgia for this kind of thing.

As a counter example, look at something like Ikaruga. While the gameplay is a throwback to the shmups of yore, it benefits greatly from more modern day aesthetics. This is more my thing, a good marriage between what I loved about the past and what I look for now.

I just don't get the excitement for a new 8-bit game. I'm glad those days are gone, but I do think it is cool that now, with the VC, Wiiware, ROMS, XBLA, and the PSN, there is a place for something like this.

Circa 1991-95, this might have been true (of course, substitute an SNES/N64 for a Wii, and a PS1 for a PS3).

Although lately I've been playing a ton of PC games. It is the system for kick ass dungeon crawlers.

I just ordered Fate, looking forward to playing this particular Diablo-clone.

I am equally baffled at the excitement for Megaman in general, 8-bit or not. I mean, with the plethora of terrible spin-offs on the DS and GBA, I would think that people would be tired of the old Rockman.

I'm just kind of like, Megaman? Really? You like that no ducking, no aiming, moving and vanishing platforms, frustratingly hard game play? Okay!

They should release Psikyo's Cannon Spike for XBLA. That one also features Megaman and is something to get worked up about. Perhaps the game exceeds the MB limit.

I don't understand the flowchart. I've played my brother's PS3 and it has the best games by far in my opinion.

Also, why does PC have such precedence over video games? I'd take a Smash Brothers, GTA, or MGS over that any day.

PC gamers have always had a sense of superiority over consoles - I experience this every time I have my friend, Nick, over to play 360, and I have to hear him bitch and moan about how "PC gamers would rape console gamers".

The mouse is more accurate for shooters, and obviously you can fit more commands onto a keyboard than onto a controller.

And PCs are constantly evolving to have better graphics and whatnot.

But I'm perfectly happy with my 360. I prefer the games released there to the games released on the PC (though there is a lot of cross-over).
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

    "Rick...it's a flamethrower."

I'm mostly playing my 360 and DS right now, but when Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Spore are released I'm moving over to my Mac. I wish PC developers would focus some more on Mac though. It is improving now that Apple uses Intel chips but it could be a lot better. The only developer I can think of at the moment that doesn't treat the Mac like shit is Blizzard. I know you can use Bootcamp to play Windows games, but that seems such a hassle to me.

Overall, these days it doesn't really matter what console you have, there are good games available and coming up for all systems.

This is the most sensible statement ever written about video games on the Internet.
