I think that paints a picture of the ugliness of humanity. The internet just allows to display the extreme of it.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

So terrifying. My kids aren't going to be allowed on the computer privately (outside a busy family room)... ever. And, like several families I know, they won't be able to have Facebook or whatever similar thing there is until 16. I'd sooner have them walk down the worst street in Baltimore. Naked.
    ...and the milk's in me.

Our genuflection before and compulsive need to give free social blowjobs to anyone in a uniform is annoying as fuck.

Depending on the circumstances, I think some UPS men might indeed get shot at as well, which would be sad.

But don't pretend you don't know my meaning. Way too many people in America have blinkers on when it comes to military service/police/firemen/etc. I think they get a free pass too often "just because." What if they are gigantic raging assholes or alcoholics who beat their spouses or racist bigots or corrupt as all hell or homophobes? Hey, they're heroes, I'll look the other way. I don't believe they are all like this, goes without saying, nor that all Americans feel that way. Obviously there's plenty who hate anyone in a uniform, which is just as bad. But I could have been more specific in saying that I despise it where it occurs.

You mean, what if firemen and soldiers and cops turn out to be just as human as everybody else?

They're still signing up for dangerous jobs and shitty pay (good pensions, though). That alone gives them my respect (but I admit to being jealous about the pensions).

When it comes to cops, I keep it relatively simple. I don't love them or hate them; I don't make judgment on them without knowing them. I try to be neutral, but I'm also naturally careful and distrustful around them, just like I would with anyone who's in a sketchy profession.

I respect soldiers, cops, firemen, etc.

But I do not hold them on a pedestal, and it annoys me when others do.

    Essentially my point, well stated.

I'm glad you recognize that they are human. I'm saying that in the good old USA, not enough people do. Hence, blinkers.

I highly recommend reading this Rolling Stone article on the underage internet 'celebrity' Kiki Kannibal and the way in which she has become the target of disturbing threats and advances.

While her family has obviously allowed her to make some poor choices, the article paints a fairly fascinating picture of the ugliness of internet vitriol.
The crazy thing is the very internet awfulness that the article condemns comes out in droves in the comments section about the article. It's fascinating how awful the internet is.

Anyway, that Kiki Kannibal... I saw more evidence of misogyny than internet vitriol in that article.

The one comment I read about this article that sums it up greatly: it's horrifying that people think being an attention whore is worse than making threats (real or no) to one, and they will go to great lengths to justify it, too. And I don't think this is exclusive to the internet, either. For whatever reason, teenage girls who flaunt their attractiveness seem to invite the "she deserved it" mentality more easily than anybody.

In all seriousness, I too was horrified reading that article, and there is no rightful response to a child being an attention whore that involves violent threats or vandalism. But at the same time, for the child to continue with that behavior, and the parents to allow that to continue, after all that occurred, it's just beyond bizarre, and half of me feels sympathy for them while the other half wants to ask "well wuddja expect?"

Cathy and Scott suggested to Kiki that it was time to leave MySpace, but Kiki protested: "If you take me off the Internet, the bullies will win." Pushed out of school, she was determined not to back down again. Her parents thought a teachable moment might be presenting itself: Maybe if they stood their ground, justice would prevail. So they let Kiki stay online, telling themselves it would blow over, like all teenage dramas do.
It's naive and dangerous, obviously, but at this point, I can imagine that it's a combination of integrity and desperation. After all, it's not like she was in the wrong to have a popular online persona.

Speaking of, police are investigating a few death threats sent to Rebecca Black, promising to kill her for making "Friday."

    See?

It's probably a good thing that reddit is hosted on such a shitty server. If that place didn't get shut down at least once a week I'd probably never get any work done.
