Wow, this is bleeding terrible. Gondry is a textbook example of a director whose visual genius is in direct opposition to his horrible writing skills. It's telling that his best film was written by Charlie Kaufman. I mean, this (and Green Hornet) are downright embarassing.
I haven't read the Boris Vian novel, but I've read I Spit On Your Graves and I refuse to believe the original text is this cheesy.
Gondry's has re-cut this for North American release resulting it in being 36 minutes shorter. Think that could help it towards something better from your stance on it?
And I can't really agree with Gondry not being able to handle his own material since I really like Be Kind Rewind and found something as recent as his We And The I from last year pretty stellar. Plus he didn't write Green Hornet, and though I still think it has some brilliantly inventive moments, even Rogen & Goldberg have now said it was was a completely mismatched, unwieldy experience for everyone involved.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:
Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
Diva (Beineix, 1981)
Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)
Maybe I was too harsh because I had just seen a really bad movie, 36 minutes shorter or not. I haven't seen We and the I and I Will and the I Too.
