the script throws a bunch of subtle hints at the viewer that leaves room for interpretation although Lucas is innocent I believe. There's a terrifying scene where the girl's dad is silhouetted in a doorway as he's about to enter her bedroom while she's muttering Lucas and I remember thinking "Oh God it's him"! And as he's played by the slightly nutty Thomas Bo Larsen, this feeling was reinforced. It turned out to be a merely gentle father-daughter scene, thankfully, but I still froze when he said "it's not Lucas, it's your father" as if he was actually saying who the culprit was.

Reviewed this one. One of my favorites of the year. It caught me offguard, since I wasn't expecting much and it pretty much destroyed me emotionally. I prefer it to The Celebration, even if it's obviously not the stylistic landmark that film is.

I did too. One of the best films I've seen this year. It plays such teeter totter games with the audience (without ever being too schematic or manipulative). I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and a groan worthy twist when[

I figured the end would continue in the Von Trier-esque fashion of the supermarket scene where Lucas just gets continually pushed through the meat grinder by the community around him until he winds up expelled, handicapped, or dead, but it ended more interesting than that. I liked how there is this slight ambiguity around all the actions right up until the end. How Lucas picks up Klara a little too easy and comforting (esp. given what just happened). How Lucas jumps a little too much while hunting. I think he's innocent but the way Vinterberg puts sprinkles of doubt in the scenes makes it more compelling.

I don't see any hope in the ending. All it did was reinforce that his life has been destroyed beyond repair. He is a good man, and showed he was the "bigger man" with his helping the girl cross the tiled floor. But the community will never forgive him, will never look at him the same way again.

He has to move and restart his life elsewhere, or face harassment and distrust for the rest of his life.

I guess i feel that if [

a man is truly innocent, stuff will repair itself, the girl might come forward when she's older, some relatives might relent in their ways and come to grips with the possibility that they were wrong. Things will never be 100% the same of course, but I took the final shot (heh, quite literally) as the doings of a crazy figure anyway, not what a rational person would do.

i wouldn't at all call it an upbeat ending though.
