Funny
Tony Leung is the first and only legitimately good MCU villain.
See: someone with actual dramatic weight behind their actions and motivations, a fully three dimensional character arc, a connection to the hero that doesn't feel hackneyed.
Runner up would be Keaton's Vulture.
Yeah, MCU absolutely sucks at villains.

Killmonger > Vulture, IMO.Quoting megladon8 (view post)
I know this is sacriligious to say, but I wasn't huge on Black Panther.
The cast is all phenomenal, I loved the Bond and Q type dynamic between T'Challa and Suri, but something just didn't click with me. Then that lazy CGI fight at the end killed it all for me.
"All right, that's too hot. Anything we can do about that heat?"

Black Panther is the worst Marvel movie I have seen. It has zero rhythm, a terrible final battle, and annoying character inconsistencies designed to make everything more neat and easily digested. (For example, Killmonger may have been an interesting villain if they had been content with having him take control of Wakanda in order to right a wrong (oppression) in the wrong way (terrorism). But no, they had to have him shoot his girlfriend and be a complete dick about the herb etc. in order to make his inevitable downfall (in one of the shittiest CGI scenes of the last decade) more black-and-white.)

I hate this mini-trend of sequels with similar sounding subtitles. I seriously can't keep track of which one is Homecoming, No Way Home, and Far From Home, and how with have Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse.
Stop it.

Did you watch Into the Spider-Verse trans? Can't help but feel you'd like that one, among Marvel movies at least.

There's been WAAAAY too much of this lately (insane hype pre-release, followed by a colossal disappointment). And I haven't found the MCU Spidey movies very good to begin with.Quoting StuSmallz (view post)
I'll wait til it's actually out for a few days and see what the response is like then.

Surprised there isn't a No Way Home thread up on 2021 movies yet. This just annihilated the box office. Not sure how I feel about that. For an Oscar frontrunner, West Side Story is doing horrible BO. Like The Last Duel horrible, although it might have some legs over the holidays. We're living in curious times.

Nightmare Alley failed dramatically this weekend as well. Younger filmgoers have always preferred spectacle, but it increasingly seems that those in their 30s to 40s are caring less and less about movies as an art and just want something to hoot and holler at like everyone else.
I get that these days more people are content to watch stuff at home on streaming, that makes sense - I just don't get the feeling that they are necessarily watching much other than broad mainstream stuff. Which is why Netflix is churning out generic stuff like The Old Guard and Extraction. Yes, they are also working with Fincher, Campion etc., but I just think that an increasing proportion of self-professed "movie fans" don't give a shit about directors anymore.

I don't think anything has changed, personally.
"Movie fans" who can name directors, writers, producers, etc. have always been much more of a niche market than your average every day movie buff.
I think of TBS and their "Movie For Guys Who Like Movies" in the 90s (aka where you can go to watch Speed, Lethal Weapon, and Commando every Saturday afternoon).
That was 9/10 self-labeled "movie fans" back then, and it's the same now.
I think with the pandemic, people are only going to see movies that they see as "must be seen in the theatre!", and those pickings are currently Marvel and...Marvel.

I don't know - I just feel something has changed. Everything you say is true, but... I don't know, when was the last time a movie that went to streaming (or had a mixed theater/streaming release) received any kind of huge WOM publicity like we saw for Stranger Things? Has it ever happened? Movies like Knives Out, Us, Get Out, 1917, Ford vs. Ferrari, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...needed theaters to build WOM and grab the attention of more discerning movie watchers. On streaming, I don't see the same cultural impact happening. COVID has destroyed the theatrical market for movies like the ones I listed and so we get a top 20 like this. Obviously, once the pandemic is over, we may see all those types of movies return and thrive but.... I don't know. I don't really "trust" audiences anymore to come out for those types of movies, even post-COVID. Part of me just sees this year as kind of a preview of where we are heading in the future with the rise of streaming and studios chasing sure bets. I hope I'm wrong. I probably am.

Well I think part (a large part) of movies on streaming services not building steam through WOM.is that they're legitimately not good.
I basically see streaming as the new generation of DTV. If it was good enough to be in theatres, it would have been in theatres.
Of course COVID has blurred this a bit, but up until January of 2020, I never expected anything releasing on Netflix to actually be great. Maybe the odd hidden gem here and there (The Ritual is one I loved on Netflix), but I'm never anticipating high quality.
