Damn ratio!!!

*weeps*

Gonna get banned again at this rate. I thought I had downloaded some of the more popular ones too based on number of seeders.

I have...

Pulse (Kurosawa)
Safe (Haynes)
A Geisha (Mizoguchi)
Sukiyaki Western Django (Miike)
Osaka Elegy (Mizoguchi)
The Return (Zvyagintsev)
Syndromes and a Century (Weerasethakul)

Gonna get banned again at this rate. I thought I had downloaded some of the more popular ones too based on number of seeders. If a film has a lot of seeders the upload is spread over all of them. So like 50 people are uploading Pulse at once, and you're upload contribution is very little. I'm actually downloading ones with very few seeders, but many leechers. It seems to be working, but I have to download the occasional film I don't really want.

I guess. I'm new, but my ratio seems to be steadily increasing with that strategy.

This is what I've done since I started and I have a solid ratio. The 1 seeder, 9 leechers will work out MUCH better than the 40 seeders, 30 leechers.

I wouldn't mind helping out and downloading Syndromes and a Century, but with 46 seeders I doubt it'll help out much at all.

I don't have a great ratio because I leech too much, but it's ridiculously easy to keep a ratio if I wanted to, just download a MoM or upload or there's also plenty of stuff on netflix you can up to KG as a full DVD-R upload. Sure people will bitch because most like divx rips but you'll get one or two leechers and thats good for 3-5 GB of stats, there is actually a lot of people that want full DVD's but are supressed by the crazy divx peoples....a dude just upped DJ Shadow's IN TUNE AND ON TIME DVD (easily found on netflix) and will get around 8-9 gigs of stats when his upload is finished.

Or wait to download an older torrent you have bookmarked until someone else starts leeching it, that way you'll have someone along for the ride and will be uploading and downloading it at the same time.

In 6 weeks since I've joined I've been able to download 80 films while upping 2 myself as DVD-R and kept a .5 ratio. Good enough not to get warned/banned!

Right now I'm getting tremendous stats from seeding two new MoM films, Cuckor's THE WOMEN and Borzage's MANNEQUIN. You have to jump on them early before there are 50 seeders.

Also, it can be hard, but just let torrent client sit for a few days. Don't download anything new. Just seed. It's amazing what a few days of no leeching can do to your ratio.

Yeah, I've been exploring other torrent sites and so haven't downloaded anything new for a while, and I have a massive ratio. I also find, at other sites, files that are on KG, so I'm effectively uploading to KG without having downloaded from KG.

Sometimes the lotsa leechers, few seeders can backfire, because the swarm sometimes finishes around the sametime and there's nobody left to upload to.

Look for smaller files, popular stuff, as they pop. Don't bother with anything more than a couple pages deep from the new page, and think twice about grabbing any bumps. MoM and porn (for reals) are great for boosting ratios. Mine is 1.3 now and I've done some excessive DLing lately.

I just watched this the other day. It was pretty underwhelming as far as his other efforts go and yet Clouzot is still able to make even the most mundane storyline resonate. I'm not sure what it is about his filmmaking, perhaps he just gives his scenes room to breathe, but whatever it is, there's something special about his storytelling style. His imagery doesn't call direct attention to it's beauty and yet it possesses a functional beauty all it's own.

Oooh yeah, Bruce Conner rocks. Everyone make sure to see America is Waiting, Breakaway and Cosmic Ray if you haven't already.

And thanks for the heads up on Sudden Rain kj. I love me some Naruse and it's getting a great ratio. And if anyone's looking for a slightly off-the-wall Naruse, check out Her Lonely Lane (aka A Wanderer's Notebook, I think). Not only is it a flat-out great film, but it features an absolutely bizarre, occasionaly pure method, performance from the always stunning Hideko Takamine, full of crazy gestures and facial expressions.

Bardot was perfect in this. That being said, yeah I was a bit underwhelmed as well. It was still a good solid movie. The premise was kinda unexciting, though Clozout manages to almost pull it off, and he kept my interest throughout. I have Manon and La Prisonniere of his as well. I'll probably be giving both a watch fairly soon.

I started Manon but just haven't had time to finish it yet. I used to be a die hard 'must watch the entire film in one sitting' kind of guy (for tonal/emotional reasons) but more and more these days I treat films like books, start and stop when I feel like it and come back to it a few days later. I have a good enough memory that I really feel like I don't lose much compared to what I gain (the ability to squeeze in viewings over a period of disparate free time blocks).

Bah, flimshaw. In fifty years we'll see, time will vindicate me!

It doesn't help that the karagarga print of Manon isn't particularly good and the subtitles I got were abysmal, still I tried to ignore both of those elements and I still think it was a fairly weak piece of filmmaking. I have to look into La Prisonierre as well, round out that filmography.

If you know any currently popular movies there, or think you know one coming out, stay up and alert on it.

I only got so high because in the time I wasn't watching/downloading many movie I just left my uTorrent open. Even stuf you don't think people will get they eventually do. Also, if you haven't noticed this: when someone requests a re-seed on something you have downloaded a notification will come up on your front page and you can get all 700MB or whatever if you hop on that and start seeding. Ummm... heh heh *nervous laughter*

I'm not sure. Which is preferred? I have a bunch of stuff on DVD that would be beneficial to those on KG. I know I definitely prefer higher resolution (the Brewster McCloud I got was too pixellated). But I understand that full DVR quality is pretty byte-heavy. Teach me, wise one.

Kurious Jorge v3.1
05-09-2008, 04:11 PM
well if you upload a full DVD-R of a low quality bootleg, no one is going to download it. Full DVD-R's are for high quality retail DVD mostly. They get less interest/shorter lifespan, but if you get at least one person's interest, you'll get upload stats equivelent to the size of the DVD at the minimum. DVD-R's are the easiest to upload.

Divx/xvid are more preferred/more downloaded but obviously not the quality of a full DVD-R. They also are more time consuming to rip/upload.

Give me an example of a title you have that would benefit KG (your first prospective upload let's say) and I'll tell you which route to go plus a guide.

Are you on a mac or pc?

I have that Home Movies DVD, you will definitely want to rip it to xvid/divx.

1) First you'll need DVD Decryptor to rip it to a VIDEO_TS folder. it is done ripping it to your hard drive you want to create a folder, label it as the film ("Home Movies") and drag the VIDEO_TS folder in it. It is always preferable to put the VIDEO_TS folder inside a parent folder.

Download here (freeware): http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1011845169/1

2) Then you will use Auto GK to import that VIDEO_TS folder and convert it to divx/xvid.

Download Auto GK (Freeware) here: http://www.autogk.me.uk/

"Very Easy" Tutorial on how to convert : http://forum.karagarga.net/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=731

3) Then you hit the upload tab on KG main page and follow the step-by-step instructions:

Tutorial on creating rip specs: http://forum.karagarga.net/index.php?showtopic=4931

4) The last step of upload is to upload the torrent file that you create using your BT client (Azureus, utorrent, etc.). There should be an option to 'create torrent file' on a dropdown menu of your particular client:

You want to make sure that:
- the tracker announce is: http://karagarga.net/announce.php
- you mark it as a 'private' torrent (so no public leechers can latch on)

At the end of creating the torrent file, the client will ask you to save it to your computer. Save it somewhere you can find it (I usually just save it to my desktop).

Then you will load that torrent file (which represents your data) to KG and when you hit 'upload', it will take you to your newly created torrent page for your upload.

5) The last thing you have to do to make the torrent active and visible on the main page is click/download the torrent file off the page you created (like you do when you start any download) and when it asks for a place to save the torrent, you select your parent folder ("Home Movies") with the VIDEO_TS folder inside it.

Your client should run a hash check on it and start seeding your upload.

It may be a bit difficult your first time, but it is really easy after you do it once. Register with the KG forums if you are not, because every guide, question, answer you can think of is there.

Download stuff that's brand new (like literally within the hour) and leave it up for as long as people are grabbing it. Even if you don't want the movie, it'll help your ratio. You can just delete it after. This is the best way to improve your ratio and stay on the site.

Is there something else I should doing to increase my ratio? I need friends. FRIENDS!Yeah, pretty much what KF said. Grab newly posted stuff that you figure will be in high demand. Even if it is something that you might not have an interest in. Also next week they'll be posting new masters of the month. You get a 50% upload bonus if you seed these, so grab those too.

The video file and the sub file have to have the same name (aside from .avi or .mpeg part) and be located in the exact same folder. That should do the trick.

If you're still having problems, try manually loading them. Use the Open File menu in VLC Player (Ctrl+F). Click the "Use as subtitles" box and select the .srt file from wherever you saved it.

Sult (Carlsen)

The Son (Dardennes)
Two Men in Manhattan (Melville)
Michael the Brave (Nicolaescu)
The Parallax View (Pakula)

Plus how come when I finished downloading a torrent and seeding it, nothing pops up in my bonus box when the download is complete?

You only get a bonus for seeding. Only Master of the Month material gives you a bonus for uploading while leeching.

Just a couple quick suggestions for maximizing KG:

-Don't be a sucker and watch films on your laptop, unless it's bigger than your tv. :) I picked up an S-Video chord a couple months ago and it lets me see my laptop screen on my tv. The image isn't only bigger, but brighter and clearer as well. You can get 6-foot chord at Best Buy for $20 (30-35 for the 12-foot). The only downside is that doesn't transfer the sound, but if you don't have a nice pair of speakers you use for the computer, you can get another chord (don't know the name) that'll transfer the sound from laptop to tv.

-Unless you already have a huge harddrive, spend the $80-100 for a 320 or 500 MB External hard drive. This not only gives me the room to DL as much as I want, but to keep everything I get for long periods of time for seeding. It makes it much easier to boost your ratio if you're not deleting films right away, esp. since I've had films that got no leechers for the first couple weeks and then a bunch of action after that.

I think you have to upload over 50GB and have a ratio over 1.0 to be a Power User. But I have several invites and I know a few others here do too, so if you need any for friends, all you have to do is ask.

It's a Toshiba from '03, not a flatscreen. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a newer tv since I think most of them come with an S-Video input. If you're not sure, look here (http://www.coloredhome.com/video/s-video_PC.JPG) and see if that's somewhere on the back/side of your tv.

I have a PC, but I'm sure it's just as easy with a Mac. I hit Shift-F8, change a setting and switch the set to Video1 and I'm good to go.

Azureus? I don't know exactly since I have never used it but basically with other clients you will click the link at the top of the torrent page and when it asks where you want to save the file to you instead find and select the file you have (whatever drive it may be on). It will hash check the file and start seeding it once that is complete.

That site is a ripoff. The speeds on seedboxhosting would also suck since they jam alot of people on their servers (they allow you to sell parts of your seedbox to your friends to split the costs)

I am on a seedbox run by a fellow user on Cinematik. It costs 35 dollars a month and you get 200gb of hard disk space and unlimited traffic. Seedboxhosting would probably charge you 150 a month for that if they had that size option. The only drawback is the client interface is linux based so you have to be proficient with typing in commands and what not.

Also if you just use karagarga it probably wont do you much good because it is alot harder to seed or get stats because there are no golden or freebie torrents to run up your upload stats. The 1.5 TB I uploaded was at Cinematik, a full size DVD torrent site with weekly free leech torrents.

Ive just started working on my KG ratio with the seedbox last night and I've uploaded 30 GB overnite on the MoM torrents and my own upload.

I just don't see any reason to spend money every month to increase your ratio. If you just have a little patience your ratio at most of these sites will be fine. The problem is when you're new to these sites, its like the kid in the candy store syndrome. You just have to download all this stuff you've only read about, never dreaming of getting the opportunity to finally watch it yourself.

But I probably just need to devote more energy to MoM and lots of seeder stuff rather than a few of those and mostly obscure titles. If anyone feels like grabbing The Devils, Rien Ne Va Plus, Finnegans Wake, The Flame and Citron, Pierrot le Fou, White Mane, These are the Damned, Silent Light or Letters from a Dead Man definitely go for it though.

Not necessarily, if it's a full DVD site, things go dead suddenly and its harder to reseed them. KG is alot easier to bookmark and be patient with, but other sites you have to grab what you can because on certain things you may never get a chance again (such as massive box sets). I was 300 GB under a 1.00 ratio before my seedbox and now I have more buffer than I will ever need.

One month of a paid seedbox was certianly worth it because I was able to drain my bookmarks and not worry about having to make a strategy of what I'm going to download and when, I have it all now in terms of bookmarks and now can just wait for new stuff.

I understand your argument about shelling out money every month, but one month was enough for me.

The problem is that I have Henri Langlois syndrome and want to acquire and archive every film imaginable. I'm pretty sure most aren't like that.

One month I can see, but if it is monthly, then no.

I haven't figured out the merits of a full DVD site yet (I am a member at Cinematik, but I've only downloaded one film from there). I guess if you want to save everything you download onto a disc then it makes sense, but I usually only download, seed until I watch and then delete. Having a file, that is in some cases, 5 times greater in size makes no sense when my greatest concern is hard drive space. I guess I'm a quantity over quality guy.

I try to archive everything. You can get a 500 GB external HD for as low as 79 bucks, so why not? A 500 GB HD lasts me about 3 months until its filled. It's almost the equivalent of 3 months of paying for netflix cost wise (except torrent sites have a far better selection).

Not really. 8-15 minutes per DVD including data verification after the burn is done. I'm talking about full size DVD's, I leave .avi files on my HD and just plug my laptop into my TV with an HDMI cable and watch the divx files on my TV that way.

Oh every once in a while I just go into the chat room to ask a question and they're always very uptight, power trippy and pedantic.

For instance I uploaded a file, couldn't get the specs for it (mac program wasn't working) and the mod was like... try harder or we'll take down the file. Why not just be happy that I uploaded a film no one else had? Who gives a shit about the audio/video specifications.

But just based on their prior attitude I already knew they'd have that reaction.

This is not related to Karagarga, but I thought maybe you nice folks could help me with this: I think I finally learned how to use torrents. It seems to be some kind of gentleman's game -- you download, and then allow others to download from you. How long should I wait for someone to download from me before I can believe I've done my duty as a gentleman? I downloaded four silent Japanese movies, and I don't think there's much demand for them.

As long as on the whole I'm seeding as much as I'm leeching, then I feel like I'm doing my duty. Eventually every film will get someone to bite, but after awhile it becomes a space issue. It doesn't make sense to seed a film for 3 months after you've watched it if you're HD is close to full.

soitgoes...
11-11-2010, 02:39 AM
And most private trackers take away the "gentlemanly" part of torrenting. They require you, and others, to keep your ratio over a certain limit. It becomes more of a selfish requirement.

Qrazy
11-11-2010, 03:02 AM
Ehh personally I don't think it's worth the risk to maintain uploads to public trackers. Here it's legal to download, illegal to upload, and my internet is capped. So I only upload when I have to i.e. Karagarga. I've seen moved on from torrents to megaupload and rapidshare though. It's much, much faster and at no point are you uploading.

I can imagine the mods at a site like KG to be assholes. I've been to lots of places on the Internet that seemed to be run by 12-year-olds who've been hackers since the crib. Ask'em any question and they digitally stare at you like you're a moron. Try programming in php (an open source language) sometime and be amazed by how childish some of the error messages are.

In my experience though, the height of Internet assholery were the arrogant SOBs at the alt.movies.kubrick newsgroup.

If you drop below these ratio requirements at any time, you will receive a warning for a certain time. You need to use this warning period to improve your ratio. When the warning period has ended, the system checks if you meet the ratio requirements. If you do, the warning is removed. If you don not, you will be placed on probation.

You will not be banned from the tracker due to poor share ratio, but if your ratio stays below the minimum requirements long enough (like explained above), you will be placed on probation. During the probation you cannot download any new torrents except Featured Torrents. You can only seed the torrents you have already downloaded or uploaded yourself..

Brightside labelled what your ratio needs to be, but to your second question, the reason why they have the ratio is so that people continue to seed the films they grab, at least giving back the bytes they took. It seems like a fair deal, one most struggle with when they're just getting going. After awhile people like myself, Brightside and Derek probably don't pay too much attention to what they download because they are ratio rich. I know Brightside and myself could probably download without seeding a few hundred films without fear of being banned.

Asian DVD Club.

I use uTorrent as my torrent client, and a lot of the time when it says I have a torrent seeding under the ETA it just gives me the infinity symbol "∞". In fact, that's what it usually shows. Is this something normal or is their something I can do to fix it and actually have my KG torrents seeding? I feel like I'm missing seeding stuff here.

I think that just means no one is downloading it at the time. The number to watch, I think, is "ratio." If it's 0.0, that means no one has downloaded it.

Edit: I am not a user of uTorrent, so I didn't know they apparently don't have a "ratio" column. My research informs me that this data can be found in "help" and "show statistics" after that.

I just relogged in to my karaguga account and my ratio is low. How can I make sure that I'm seeding properly?

As long as you don't move the files from where they downloaded to or delete the entry in your torrent client (UTorrent, etc.), the files will continue to seed. If you do need to move the files in the future, like from your laptop to an external HD or something, you just have to click the redownload button for that torrent on KG and select the new file path where the file lives.

My ratio is .183. Not good.

I downloaded a movie I don't care about because it had 1 seeder and 14 leechers. Now it has 17 seeders and no leechers.

All that is good but I'm not even sure if my seeds are being blocked. My ratio has never moved up except for the bonuses.

I have:
The Education of Sonny Carson
Everyone Says I Love You
Go Go Second Time Virgin
Shirin Neshat Women Without Men

I give out so much and have my hand in so many subtitle pots that I try and spread things out a bit more evenly. Granted, I may be a bit reticent with it, though.

I have ratio offered in a number of pots that I'll likely never have to pay up on because there doesn't seem to be a lot of Japanese translators on the site. I'm usually stingy with my ratio too. I remember how hard it was to get my ratio up, and it still plays in the back of mind that I never want to have to deal with that again. But let's be honest, I would have to work really hard to fuck up my KG account at this point.

There's a Master of the Month which gives a ratio bonus. They also do featured torrents which are basically free leach, but there's only 4 or so at a time. They have only ever had one site wide free leach since I've been a member, and that was last May.
