soitgoes sent me an email a while back with an invitation. I was going to do it but then didn't get around to it. I'm getting around to it now cause I want to see that movie B-Side talked about in the 1970 area but I can't sign up because it takes me to the signup page and it asks specifically for a invite code which didn't come in the email. :(

It's highly regarded by almost everyone whose seen it. I've honestly heard only great things about it. Sorry B-side, you're just an ordinary populist on this one, unlike me, a true auteurist formalist who sees the least viewed films of a director first. Well, you missed out on freeleech unfortunately. Try some of the featured torrents (browse-->featured) since they can only help your ratio. Master of month is good, too. But mostly just be a little patient at first, and just keep on seeding as much as possible. I'll give you some bonus to start you off.
edit: and even if something has a lot of leechers, if it also has a shitton of seeders, it won't really help all that much (if u are only or one of two or three seeders on something being dl-ed, that's good). but mostly just time is your friend and be frugal at first, but it's not too hard really

Didn't know where to put this...but this goes into effect today. Does this sound like something that is going to deter piracy?

Internet service providers have launched a more coordinated effort to deal with subscribers who illegally download movies, TV shows and music.

AT&T Inc., T -1.35% Cablevision Systems Corp., CVC -0.66% Time Warner Cable Inc, TWC +0.17% Verizon Communications Inc. VZ +0.68% and Comcast Corp. CMCSA -1.25% have put into place an alerts system with "six strikes," with various degrees of penalty for subscribers accused of piracy.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act already requires ISPs to notify users of piracy complaints made by media companies. But the new system, dubbed the Copyright Alert System, brings the major ISPs under one uniform program and for the first time involves a progressively assertive series of six alerts, starting with a letter or email about the infraction and escalating to where it may slow down a user's Internet connection.

"The goal is to change behavior and get people to pay attention," said Jill Lesser, executive director of the Center for Copyright Information, the group coordinating the effort.

The program will be driven by intelligence gathered by the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America, the trade groups for the music and media companies.

The Internet service providers will employ harsher rules for repeat offenders who, once warned, don't rein in their piracy appetites. But the ISPs are using different kinds of penalties. Time Warner Cable, for instance, said that after the first four notifications, it will lock down offenders' browser until they call a number and show that they understand what they have done and agree to stop.

After six strikes, ISPs reserve the right to curtail use. "We reserve the right to terminate a user's account for serious abuse," a Time Warner Cable spokesman said.

Verizon's FiOS says it plans to slow down the Internet speeds of repeat offenders on the sixth time they are notified. Comcast won't slow down Internet speeds but it will ask repeat offenders to watch an educational video.

Eh, not really. I mean, they might force you to watch an 'educational video'? Are we in the sixth grade again? Gimme a break.

What'll it do is force people to move to VPN providers, and where they can, switch ISPs. But then, anyone serious about their activity has already done this. The program will only catch the bottom feeder morons who torrent without any safeguards.

If the government weren't in the pocket of these companies, I'd think this move would open the telcos up to a world of hurt because they're no longer operating as common carriers. The system being what it is, though, I don't expect any blowback.

What's a safeguard in your eyes?

Using a VPN or proxy. Using TOR. Doing anything to encrypt your traffic (which you probably should be doing anyway, given every organization's desire to snoop these days). Or moving to an ISP that doesn't pull this kind of nonsense.

I kinda loathe piracy (at mass scale, anyway), but I'm really annoyed these guys have taken it upon themselves to become the copyright cops.

B, ffs, those are two different things.

VPNs and TOR aren't "cheap freeware brower programs." C'mon dude. If you're gonna pipe up at least have an idea what the fuck you're talking about.

Contrary to your arbitrary and ignorant belief, it is possible to hide your activity both from your ISP and local government.

Do you live on your own? Is Charter in your name and the bill goes to your email? Because I can tell you from experience, it's only a matter of time before they send you that email saying your IP address has been detected downloading copyrighted material. I also have Charter, and have received that email twice. At that point, I decided to find a VPN to protect my own interest. You should as well.

In any case, yes, a VPN is what I use and is a great solution. I wonder if they're already working on a way though to start looking at people with inordinate amounts of traffic and find a way to "investigate."

And you're so condescending. Are we even now?

I think you've said you're a healthcare professional (or maybe you're married to one). What B-side is saying is the equivalent of someone spouting off about safer sex with a bunch of misinformation. "Condoms are useless against STDs. Don't bother using them." And then using the fact that (he thinks) he's STD free as proof. Or saying "I don't use birth control. I only have sex with virgins and everyone knows you can't get pregnant the first time."

So it's not only ignorant and completely wrong-headed, it's also dangerous*. Now, if somebody said that around you, and even attempted to argue it from a position of authority ("I've never..."; "None of my friends have...") wouldn't you jump on it?

FFS, Raiders. Gimme a break. And get some fucking priorities while you're at it. You don't like my tone? Too bad. I don't like mouth breathers like B-side saying dumb shit about security that's might give someone grief someday, especially when it's painfully obvious he has no idea what he's talking about.

* Because what I don't think B-side realizes is that he's exposing his home network to every node he connects with on bittorrent. This is not a smart thing to do. Suggesting it's not a big deal is, frankly, just plain dumb.
