Indeed. DSNT and your shoegaze thread got me into another four or five artists/bands that I wouldn't have otherwise checked out. My sole complaint for Pygmalion is that its softness results in me seldom running straight through the album, but instead forces me to mix it into other bands as a counter-balance.

I like long, funny song titles. One of my old bands had a song/album called:

"Doctor Sloth and Chet the Mystery Man, as the Bassneck Masturbaters, Explain How to Release the Inner Parasite Through Conjuration of the Noise Demon."

We were called The Bassneck Masturbaters. I was Chet the Mystery Man, and my friend Ronny was Doctor Sloth. We both played bass and we were accompanied by an Amiga 2000.

Good times.

This Farflung album continues to impress the hell out of me. It is so undeniably brilliant, and so mind-numbingly amazing that I can hardly believe it actually exists. It's like someone crawled inside my head and recorded the exact album I wanted to listen to.

Combines some fabulous stereophonic production with all that makes Axelrod awesome (those things mostly being great horn accents and a full on free flowing electric guitar in the middle). I especially like the ways he uses altered distortions and different instruments to echo his hook riff.

Cool.

I got to play with Bad Manners.

We played with them, The Selector, Hep Cat, Jimmy Cliff, Skankin' Pickle, No Doubt (when they were a ska band), Let's Go Bowling, Dance Hall Crashers, Buck Oh-9, and a ton of other great ska bands. In the mid-90s, ska was king in California.

You know what would be really cool? Find some way to integrate that pedal steel of yours into a reggae riddim. Stranger things have happened -- look at folks like Horace Andy, adding a xylophone, or Prince Far-I using violin on occasion. Not to mention those amazing Harry Mudie sessions with King Tubby - dub conference with...strings!

Although I don't know what your stage persona is like. Perhaps pedal steel is too confining. :)

Man, I was thinking the same thing the other day. There's like this weird ska vibe going on around here!

I don't know if I've ever heard an ska or raggae with pedal steel. I'm sure there is some, those guys were extremely creative musically. Look at all the instruments the Skatalites would play - practically a big band at times - in addition to those you mentioned.

But you are right - the pedal steel is restrictive. You could play it standing up though. I've seen some old country guys playing it like this. It's hard to skank to the beat sitting behind something.

I just found that my old ska band (Checkmate) is mentioned on the wiki for Let's Go Bowling, another Fresno ska band. We don't have an article yet, though - just one of those red links. It says:

The Central Valley is home to some of the most influential Ska outfits of the later century, including Let's Go Bowling, as well as Kyber Rifles, Checkmate (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Checkmate_%28b and%29&action=edit&redlink=1), and Los Hooligans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Hooligans)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let%27s_Go_Bowling

Cool!

The LGB show with Bad Manners in 1991 was the one that we played at as well. It was awesome.

The Cosmic Jokers - "Kinder des Alls"

A must for fans of ze krautrock/space rock variety. Plus, the band (/not band) has an hilariously awesome backstory...

The Cosmic Jokers were the Krautrock supergroup that never really was. The brainchild of Komische Musik label head honcho Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser and Dieter Dierks, who decided to throw a series of acid-fuelled jam sessions at Dierks' studio over a period of months in 1973, bringing together the likes of Klaus Schulze and Manuel Göttsching of Ash Ra Tempel, and Jürgen Dollase and Harald Großkopf of Wallenstein.

The great cosmic joke, however, was that Kaiser secretly recorded these freewheeling space rock sessions and released them on Komische without any knowledge or consent of the artists, forgoing any royalties that may have been due. The records were withdrawn in 1975 following legal action by Schulze until performance rights were resolved, and the ever-increasing megalomaniac Kaiser was subsequently run out of the country, signalling the inevitable collapse of his recording empire.

You've never heard Monster Magnet? They had one song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1p7yt3bRjY) that was huge. I saw them open for Rob Zombie back in high school, and the only thing they had in common with Hawkwind was naked ladies on stage, though theirs were strippers/hookers performing oral sex on each other. It was equal parts hilarious and disturbing.

Dopes to Infinity - now this is a jam. The song and the album are both amazing.

But like most good space rock, MM songs should be listened to in context of the whole album, as they often build upon the previous songs and lay foundations for the subsequent songs.

Maybe I went it with a negative outlook, but "Space Lord" is such a generic rock song. It sounds like countless other songs that were playing on the radio at that time. And man were those guys sleazy at the show. The lead singer seemed like a Kid Rock clone, constantly grabbing his crotch and wearing a wife-beater. I'm not kidding when I say they brought women on the stage who stripped naked and performed oral sex on each other. Unsimulated. After that evening I wasn't too interested in exploring their discography. :P

I am, in no way, defending MM as some great band. I greatly prefer Farflung, Hawkwind (who also had naked dancers and looked like washed out white trash rockers), Pressurehead, Chrome, and other space rockers.

MM have released some very solid space rock albums though - including Dopes to Infinity, which is a classic, and should be listened to at least once by any fan of good rock 'n roll.

I dislike more than I like from the band, but I cannot deny their raw power, and when they're on, they're pretty freakin' sweet.

And yes, they are white trash.

Sam's Town is garbage. That's all I've heard and I'm not interested to hear more. I know a few people who are fans but I don't get it.

Madman - if We Were Dead.. is the only Modest Mouse you've heard, do yourself a favor and check out Lonesome Crowded West and Moon & Antarctica for their absolute best. I think each album got slightly less interesting than the one before with them, but even We Were Dead... has it's highlights (particularly "Spitting Venom").Bah, Sam's Town is awesome.

I've heard and loved "Moon," and I think its amazing. I've also heard from Modest Mouse Good News For People Who Love Bad News, which I thought was solid if disappointing, and that's about it. I do want to hear more of their earlier stuff, and right now I think that "Moon" is easily one of the best albums of the decade and that "Dead" is great.

Then you've heard most of their stuff. This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About is worth a listen since you're a fan, but it's more of a blue print for Lonesome Crowded West than a great album in it's own right. I'm with you on Moon being one of the best from this decade, but you need to go out and get LCW post haste and report back! :)

I think both of their albums have a 50% good to bad ratio, which isn't awful, but gets a little irritating.

I listened to Sam's Town a few times before I caught on to the songs; I think "My List," "Uncle Johnny," and especially "Read My Mind" match their first album for anthemic eighties nonsense. Although none of them top "All These Things I've Done." That one's still one of my favorites of . . . ever.

TV on the Radio's new album, Dear Science, is due out this month! Score! Two songs are available to listen to right now off their site. They're both good, but, as is the case with TVotR, it will probably take a lot of listens before I really fall in love with 'em.

My favorite song of theirs: "Tonight." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bhs7vlr_j_I)

TV on the Radio's work with David Bowie is their best.

"Province" is the best song they've done.

Suite: Little Lucid Moments, by Motorpsycho

Remember that first time you heard Daydream Nation, or In the Court of the Crimson King, or Meddle? It's like that. It's on a level so far above most other rock, that it makes most other rock seem small and trite.

Yeah, they are still major douchebags, but the new album is actually quite good.
