Hmm, you can find the first 3 albums on one mini-boxset for a reasonable price most places, including here. Pay Tomorrow, by Tim Exile

This guy is approaching the same level of Eno, Fripp, Byrne, et al. The way the disparate parts of his compositions blend together, allowing the songs to morph from one tempo to another is masterful, and the atmosphere created by the noises and melody is freaking awesome.

Exile is one of those guys who thinks about music on a level that most musicians can only dream of.

If you like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's, and Radiohead's OK Computer, then I also highly recommend the Easy Star All-Star's dub-reggae versions of each. More than just a gimmick, the Easy Star all-star reggae band turns each of these albums into something uniquely their own. The Dub Side of the Moon is my favorite, and it is a fantastic album.

Get The Eternal, which is a marked improvement over the relatively one-note RR. Hey Boner, or anyone else who cares, when you mentioned Loop a few posts back, it reminded me of this song that I recorded with one of my first 'bands,' Marvis (just me and my buddy Jeff).

You can tell that we, too, were very into Spacemen 3 and Loop:

Down but Not Out (http://carlsagansghost.com/albums/down.mp3)

We also have a 17 minute long jam on the album called Stoned (Jam in A) - it's pretty awful, as one might imagine. But the other tune posted above is OK, especially if you like the Spacemen/Loop style of fuzzy, bluesy, shoegaze.

Neither of us had a tremelo pedal when we recorded this, so to get that effect we just flipped the pick up switches on our guitars up and down really fast.

I think I was 18 when we recorded it.

I'm listening to the following new albums;

New Green Day 21st Century Breakdown
New Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D.
New Eminem Relapse
New Rancid Let the Dominoes Fall

I'm disappointed with all of these except for Rancid. Rancid is the only CD that actually stays consistent; It's their first CD in 6 years and it's a great listen if you like their music. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Love Last One to Die and New Orleans

Green Day; I haven't' yet reached a full conclusion on this album yet, but I'm generally disappointed because it's no where near the level of awesome American Idiot was. Last of the American Girls is a great song.

Eminem; There's nothing else for him to write about thats interesting.... The first three albums were A+, Slim Shady LP was a breakthrough, Marshall was angry as hell, and the Eminem Show was a riot and he talked so much shit to other celebs in it. Relapse is just kind hanging around... doesn't have the same kick as the other three did. 3 am and DéjÃ* Vu are good beats.

BEP; the most disappointing album; they changed they're entire style... every song is over produced, sounds like Kanye West music at a night club... this might even be their last album together. I'm still obsessed with Boom Boom Pow and Party All the Time but I was hoping for so much more.

Yeah, the first time I heard a song from them I was ready to dismiss them as Jesus Lizard wannabees but then I heard "I Still Got You (Ice Cream)". Their Seinfeld-esque content swayed me to keep listening.

There's way too much riches in NZ to mention in one post. Derek, since you're already familiar with and love Dadamah, I'd recommend first and foremost to seek out The Terminals next - they share members, and they have the same drowsy VU-ish sound, albeit they're a bit harder-rockin. Start with Touch or Little Things and proceed from there.

Apart from that, I think this excellent doco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjUDemQFznA) on the Flying Nun label covers it all pretty thoroughly, and then there's the indispensable Doledrums blog that posts uploads and other cool links regularly.

You'd recommend the Gordons before Bailter Space? I've gotta say I never really got into Gordons as much as I'd hoped. They kinda feel like a dry run for Big Black and other bands that are way better at being bludgeoning. But in any case, Derek needs to check out BS's Robot World.

This Kind of Punishment is a good call too; they remind me of Pink Reason in a lot. Also Peter & Graeme Jefferies' first solo records are both highly recommended.

By including Bailter Space in that parenthesis, I kinda recommended BS as well; I just wanted to signal how the Gordons are the original seed. I'm quite the Gordons fan, and their shortlived career stops them from becoming reiterative, which is the case with Bailter Space, who undoubtedly have great songs, but too many records. They end up becoming too obvious.

I'd recommend "Robot World" and "Vortura", which features my favourite song by them, 'Shadow'. Which, indicentally, was one of the tracks featured in the mixtape I did for YOU, mr. boner, if I recall correctly, in that mixtape exchange stunt we did ages ago.

Gee, I know it's a videogame and everything, but I'd love to see a really talented director try and do something with the whole design aesthetic of the first couple of games. Oh man. Early 80s post-punk/new wave with David Sylvian and Mick Karn. Karn could very well be the most creative bassist in pop-rock music, and Sylvian is a legend of new wave and prog rock.

So this Bazan album may be my album of the year.

It is amazing. A man pouring his heart out, working through his loss of faith, the problem of evil, growing up a Christian, and wondering how God could let so much evil exist in the world.

It's the most powerful album I've heard in a very, very long time.

With the threat of hell hanging over my head like a halo
I was made to believe in a couple of beautiful truths
That eventually had thee effect of completely unraveling
The powerful curse put on me by you

When you set the table
When you chose the scale
Did you write a riddle that you knew they would fail
Did you make them tremble
So they would tell the tale
Did you push us when we fell

If my mother cries when I tell her what I discovered
Then I hope she remembers she taught me to fallow my heart
And if you bully her like you done me with fear of damnation
Then I hope she can see you
for what you are

When you set the table
When you chose the scale
Did you write a riddle that you knew they would fail
Did you make them tremble
So they would tell the tale
Did you push us when we fell

What am I afraid of?
Who did I betray?
In what medieval kingdom does justice work that way?
If you knew what would happen
And you made us just the same
Then you my Lord can take the blame

Definitely not for people who aren't really into lyrics; it's all about the poetry here.

Crystal Castles - "Magic Spells"

Hm, came up on Pandora and I dig it despite hating the album when I first heard it. Guess I'll give it another spin.

Also, been loving David Kilgour's Here Come the Cars for the past couple days. Really beautiful stuff.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. A 2nd listening after a few months away didn't improve my opinion of the CD.

Amazing, amazing album. I'm a sucker for rock operas in general, but The Wall is so ambitious and grandiose and emotionally bare.

What do you think of the movie? I loved it for a long time, and then I went several years without seeing it. I watched it again perhaps a year or two ago and was really disappointed. Some of it worked beautifully, but the problems I developed with it were so glaring that it kind of ruined the whole thing for me.

Bob Geldof as Pink is my biggest complaint. He looked the part, but the man seemed more like a pouty, pretentious arteeest than a rock and roll legend crippled by depression. Plus, letting him sing Stop in the movie was a mistake of grand proportions. That scene was just grating as hell. I also thought that a lot of the animation was clunky and poorly executed, especially The Trial.

Perhaps my adoration for the album is partially to blame. :)

I think she snuck the best song at the end of Songs of Mass Destruction.

That song, "Summertime Clothes" and "Brothersport" are especially amazing, but the whole album is just plain awesome.

Haven't posted in this thread for a long time, but seeing both Pixies and Grizzly Bear live about a month ago has left "Gouge Away" and "Ready, Able" stuck in my head and in heavy rotation ever since.

Also, kicking around in playlists of mine for the last little while:

11th Dimension -- Julian Casablancas
Bigmouth Strikes Again -- The Smiths
Lasso -- Phoenix
Take A Chance With Me -- Roxy Music
Dance Little Liar -- Arctic Monkeys
Doctor Blind -- Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton
Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) -- A Flock Of Seagulls
Road To Nowhere -- Talking Heads

Just very safe and enjoyable stuff, and Casablancas' is mainly in anticipation for the new album as its something from him, Strokes or no Strokes accompanying.

Get Dream of the Sea; by far and away their masterpiece. Will Oldham did a nice cover of the title track.

"Summertime" is fantastic. There's one other song I like a lot and the rest are okay. I gave it a 3/5 which puts me pretty much right between the absurd hype and backlash. Worth checking out and I'll probably end up seeing them in December for $15.

Great CD, and a new favorite of mine.

Murmur is a new favorite of yours? Man, get through that discography. Just based on a few conversations I've had recently it seems like there's been a fair amount of revisionist REM bashing going on amongst the hipster community at large. Lot of folks saying their songs sound too samey and whatnot and I don't get this at all. They're an easy top five favorite band of mine and I know a lot of people who REM has meant so much to. But I mean even past all that just the sheer number of bands throughout the '80s and '90s who had their way paved for them by Stipe and co or maybe even wouldn't exist at all without REM is staggering
