It Ain't Me Babe-Bob Dylan. Johnny Cash also daftly covered this rather clever and delightful song, although his version was a tad more fast paced.

PS: 1,000 posts. Cool. I'd have to say this is my most successful thread.

Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight

This album was so underrated.

I thought it got its fair share of love last year with several critics calling them the modern Fleetwood Mac (and meant that as a compliment). I really like The Execution of All Things and there are some flashes of greatness on More Adventurous, but I really couldn't get into that one. If you like Rilo Kiley, or more importantly Stars, you should check out Headlight's Some Racing, Some Stopping. I like it better than either of those bands recent albums, though not quite as much as Set Yourself on Fire.

They're not really prog-rock, more like space rock. Have you heard a band called Farflung? They're like the modern day Hawkwind. They were Nick Turner's touring band for a bunch of his solo shows.

I recently saw a great BBC doc. on Hawkwind called Don't Panic.

Well, "Coleurs" and "Graveyard Girl" don't have much emphasis on the vocals, or they're at least drowned out by everything else and "Skin of the Night" is aping off Cocteau Twins, so I s'pose that's why that section worked best. I agree the other songs on the first half are pretty weak though. Overall, it's still a pleasant listen, but nowhere near Dead Cities... or Before the Dawn..., though I like that they're at least going for something different here.

"Coleurs" is the only song I really like out of the first 6...not that I dislike the others I just don't find them particularly great. "Graveyard Girl" is carried too much by the guitar and drums for my taste and sounds like it belongs on a different album entirely. My favorite stretch is "We Own the Sky", "Highway of Endless Dreams", and "Too Late."

Sun Kil Moon is amazing. Mark Kozelek is my favorite singer-songwriter. The dude is just awesome. I've seen him live many times, and he always impresses the heck out of me. Red House Painters put on some of the best live shows I've ever seen.

That's great! I didn't even see this until after my post. I haven't heard any of Merzbow's albums (though I have Dharma and 1930) but they were not as oppressive as I expected them alongside Boris. Sure, it makes for a more chaotic and louder sound, but it's very much in service of the Boris tunes rather than drowning them out. I've listened to snippets of their albums though and I'm expecting to have the same reaction as you! :)

Psst... Merzbow is one guy.

Yeah, I've been a "fan" of Merzbow since high school. Something about his sheer anti-musicality fascinates me, as he's really just a sculptor of ear-punishing noise for the most part, even if I'm convinced about 80% of the time that it's bullshit. Check out the album Merzdub that he collaborated on with jazz musician Jamie Soft, the two styles meld in interesting ways. His recent album Coma Berenices is one of his more accessible efforts, so I recommend that as well for beginners.
