I couldn't agree more. I think Gulag Orkestar is their best album, but all three (if you include the EP) are wonderful. I listened to them for about 3 weeks straight almost without interrupting for something else. They just consumed me. "Canals of Our City" is so beautiful.

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks - "Witch Mountain Bridge"

This is a really cool album, it's a lot more focused than Real Emotional Trash; I like his stuff with the Jicks, it's spaced out and jammy without being annoying. I imagine this is what the last two Pavement albums (Terror Twilight, in particular) would sound like if Malkmus had complete control over the projects. He's coming to Dallas in April and I'll be there. Thanks for the recc!

Finally getting around to their EP's after Davis's repeated pimping, especially b/c he's one of the only people I've run into who also prefers A Storm in Heaven to their other full length's. Not surprised to find out this one's pretty great.

A Storm in Heaven is fantastic, lightyears ahead of their subsequent releases. Even in terms of production it dwarfs their other releases. It is such a dense album, full of amazing instrumentation, and everything is nestled perfectly within the stereofield. It's one the best produced albums I've ever heard. And the songs kick major ass too - no freaking cheesy ballads.

The suffered the same curse as a lot of bands that "mature": sonically, they became less interesting.

A Man Called Sun is an awesome song. So is Gravity Grave.

3 albums in.
Last one was Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Had some difficulties erm.. obtaining a decent copy, which led to some delay.

I love these guys. I'm not really sure why, it just clicks with me. I think it might have something to do with Grohl and his general laid-back, goofy attitude. I think that comes through in much of their work. I've always been a fan, have always enjoyed their latest albums, and their last album was no exception.

So how are you finding your exploration of Dylan?

Red Hot Chili Peppers I actually defend as being a damn good band. While I like the Foo Fighters I think they're a good band at best, and decent at the very worst. I enjoy their music a lot though and I own The Colour and the Shape.

D'You Know What I Mean?-Oasis. I dig this song alot, although I have pretty mixed feelings about the album its on. I actually liked it the first listen through but after a second and third hearing I'm getting a "meh" vibe from it.

The ringing in my ears following the ridiculously loud, outrageously awesome Liars set I heard tonight. Quite possibly the best live set I've seen - nothing but great songs, Angus was absurd and off his rocker (donning a purplish pink suit and looking like an odd mix of Nick Cave and David Byrne) and, my god, the drumming. Definitely. It's really remarkable and I love the subtle transitions, especially throughout the second half. As devastating as it is though, it's strangely uplifting and cathartic so it never becomes depressing. It somehow captures the feelings of accepting an inevitable death with dignity that the musicians on the Titanic must have been going through at the time. I know you mentioned Bryars here before so when I saw a positive review of his new (I believe live) version of this, I decided to check out the original version and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet.
