Wailing Wall - The Cure
Back in College in my last year I lived in an apartment with a couple of guys. Three girls lived next door and we shared a balcony - I didn't know them very well. I was playing The Top on my stereo and our door was open - one of the girls was on the balcony leaning on the railing looking out - thinking of something... Wailing Wall was playing. It's a moment etched in my mind.

Thanks, Russ! Yeah, I love the Waldorf. I had one a few years ago, traded it for something else, and then bought another one about a year ago because I missed it so much. One of the most versatile synths I own.
This does kind of have a Betke/Pole vibe doesn't it? I've been working on incorporating a little more dub influence into my stuff.
I'll be playing live this Saturday, and hopefully I'll have a live album to release shortly after.

Ok, I've driven around town with the Arctic Sleep album, and given it some plays while reading as well. The drum tone that the engineers achieved is phenomenal, and a lot of the lighter portions are similarly impressive. In some of the heavier portions I can hear a Pelican and Cave In influence. There are a few sections where the riffing is almost too anonymous and not textured enough to escape a pedestrian feel, but those moments are thankfully scarce throughout the album.
Of the influences you listed, I hear Hum most heavily in the vocal pitch and lyrical structure. And that's definitely a good thing since I continue to be more and more impressed with the Downward is Heavenward album, and am now basically regarding it as a lost classic. Some of the longer tracks have a post-rock feel to them, and I think "Black Moth," "Valley of Poison," and "Release the River" are the strongest overall cuts early on; they explore the most varied musical structures and build quite effectively. I'm intrigued to return to some of the more ambient fare here...

I'll throw out a pretty big MEH. Then again, I didn't think Twisted Fantasy was the instant classic many deemed it (though still pretty great), so maybe Kanye's terrible rapping prevents even his best work from sounding masterful to me. I do like that he took a total left turn rather than trying to recapture the maximalist grandeur of his last album. And it's still a hell of a lot better than 808s.

I'll go one step further and add that the best most creative production and beats in the world can't save West's terrible flow and dull lyrics, the two most important things in hip hop. Why this guy is considered a good hip hop artist blows my mind. But then again, I don't get most modern hip hop at all.

What's the doc called?? Just a glance at his bio (blind NY street performer who dresses in Viking attire and knew Bernstein and Charlie Parker!?) has me already drooling to learn more about him. I picked up the self-titled Moondog, which appears to be considered his "classic", and Elpmas based on the strength of the song you linked. Great discovery!

I discovered him awhile ago while researching some modern minimalism; some people - including Reich, Zorn and Glass - consider him one of the fathers of modern American minimalism.
So far, H'art Songs has been my favorite album. I just love his voice. It's so earnest.
I also like his more percussive stuff, and his use of polyrhythms is great, as is illustrated in Elpmas. There's a good collection on Pirate Bay that has a ton of his more percussive stuff on it.

Doris is a really good album. Further proof that there's still stuff out there for people who complain there's no more lyrics. I think it was smart for Earl to cut out all the rape stuff and go with the introspective side. Some killer guest spots too, I was a fan of Frank Ocean's off the cuff verse on "Sunday."

I agree with all this, but the bad guest spots in the latter half of the album (Mac Miller, RZA, Tyler) really hurt it overall. As you mentioned, Ocean is strong, as is Domo (unexpected), and Vince Staples holds his own I suppose, but in the end no current rapper is on Earl's level, and they mostly bring down the album imo. Maybe a DOOM collab could work, but that's it.

He's as relevant as ever now. Maybe not commercially/pop charts wise, but musically he's been pushing rap forward as a genre for a while now. I love his old stuff too, though, and I'd probably be defined as a Kanye fanboy, so there's that.
To tie this into the thread, I like the new Nine Inch Nails album, but it feels surprisingly "safe" post-Yeezus. Reznor still knows what he's doing though, and it sounds surprisingly relevant.
Just gave the new Janelle Monae a listen, need a couple of more listens, but loved her first album. A shit ton of music this year. Still haven't checked out The Weeknd's new one.

Listening to some Savages - they're alright.
I found myself downgrading their music after the initial rhapsodic response from NPR, Pitchfork, and other sites. This takedown (http://www.collapseboard.com/reviews/albums-reviews/savages-silence-yourself-pop-noirematador/)ended up mirroring my thoughts--the music is fine and all, but the degree of praise feels misguided, and the lyrics and their live delivery do more to turn me against the band than anything else. Especially since the Heliotropes debut has been greeted with a collective critical yawn, and that one's far more powerful and strident of a release to me.

I'm starting to get heavily into Duke Ellington (after years of having and liking Money Jungle and the Blanton/Webster box set but not delving any deeper) and boy is that a trip down the rabbit hole. Just a massive amount of material - so far I've been mainly focusing on the big band 78rpm era of 1926 into the mid-40s, which is collected in multiple massive box sets that still don't quite cover everything. It's stunning music, all these perfect 3-minute miniatures encompassing a huge range of tones, moods, and styles. The emotional and tonal variety of his music is dizzying; he was equally adept at frenzied, uptempo dance floor blasts and nuanced mood pieces. These years are dotted with vocal numbers that I generally don't find as satisfying - for all the wonderful instrumentalists that passed through Ellington's bands, he worked with very few great singers and a lot of mediocre ones, though Ivie Anderson at least is often very enjoyable - but even those tunes feature sumptuous arrangements and playing around the disappointing vocal refrains. This is an amazing body of work that I've neglected for too long, out of some misguided notion that this stuff was too old-fashioned in comparison to more modern jazz - clearly a silly idea that's been thoroughly shaken out of my head now that I've actually listened to this stuff in more depth.

I have indeed, it's still a favourite of mine to pull out if I have no coffee around to pull an all nighter. :) I was unaware that "The Frolic" was also based on one of his works, though. Cool. I've been to check out more of the dark folk stuff a lot of these early Industrial artists put out. It's its own thing entirely; the closest comparison I can find is some of the folk metal I've listened to and even that is less subtly insidious. Of course, Comus had already kind of done a similar feel two decades earlier.

An ode to '70s style jazz. Could see this being very enjoyable and mellow...

I've never liked Pharrell, but this is such a unique sound it's hard not to like. The other bits of the album I heard did nothing for me. So, I still don't like Pharrell but this song is cool.

The War on Drugs.
So good. Very early in 2014, but this should be a contender for AOTY come December.

Can't get enough of the War on Drugs album. Seeing them Saturday. Full disclosure: a friend of mine is in their touring band. Can't wait.

This has been getting a lot of play from me lately. Only The War on Drugs's newest rivals it. The layers of melody and variation of musical styles is what most impresses me. And that moment at 2:00 in is just grin-inducing. Combines the craft and dedication of Agalloch with a focus on post-rock, black metal, instrumental, ambient, and so many other soundscapes. Absolutely bonkers and wonderful for that.

I was wondering what Howard Dean's been up to. ;)
I do really like everything else going on though. I just wish so much metal wasn't ruined absolutely ludicrous vocals.

Yeah, this one doesn't bury the vocals the way something like Woods of Desolation did. That said, there's enough musical talent on display (especially the last two tracks, or track six) that I think it still affirms its quality to those who can't acclimate to black metal shrieks. It reminds me of Ocean's Pelagial, which was released in a double vocal and vocal-less edition so that those who didn't appreciate metal vocals could still groove to the music.
Meantime, super-excited by your Swans rating. Trying to set up our summer schedule to hit them up in St. Louis in June, and this encourages me to make that happen all the more...

Nice. Didn't even know about it. He was from Main Source, right?

Doyeq returns to the sounds of deep house, and even though he's been away from the genre for a few years, he's still got it.
