as a rapper? of course not, but jay hasn't had an album that can match any of kanye's since the black album.
i was a pretty big fan of american gangster, kingdom come and blueprint 3 were both lowpoints in jay-z's career

2011: The year the sax solo was cool again.
Midnight City's is pretty excellent, but beyond that, the fact that even the most recent Katy Perry and Lady Gaga (hers by the late Clarence Clemons) mega-singles have pretty prominent ones show that they can even work commercially too.
A step back in the right direction of actual band instruments used in hit songs?

I'm not a fan of the sax solo. I generally don't care for horns in my rock/pop, although there are certainly exceptions. The Beatles used them well.

Yeah, when I first heard them I wasn't that into them. I liked a track or two off of the first album but it didn't grab me per se. Now I'm not sure what shifted but I can't get enough of their sound. Where in the past many of their tracks sounded like any other I now experience a more nuanced soundscape that feeds back into the totality of their work. I would say their best album is probably Classics though, you might give that a shot. They're also very good live.

Yet another reason disliking Gosling is inexplicable. Saw them play at a festival last summer and they were a ton of fun. They had about 25 kids all costumed up on stage with them singing the choruses. It was a nice surprise since I hadn't heard of them before that.

i would say i do, but that wouldn't be entirely truthful. i much prefer my electronic music to utilize vocals, even if it's just sample-based, like the works of jacques greene and machinedrum
i could provide examples of instrumental electronic music i like, but i could probably find way more examples that include vocals in some fashion

I love that they left that opening. The story behind it is pretty funny. Dylan is a notoriously brisk and borderline gruff artist in the studio, which tends to keep his accompanying musicians a bit on edge, but he's also known to improvise and play around between takes, working things out with various songs or just kind of goofing a bit. In that particular instance, he'd been toying with lyrics and such between takes while recording that album, and when he broke into "115th Dream" everyone thought he was just playing around, and rather than jumping in with him for the recording, they just sat staring at him while he played. Hilarity ensued. Hearing them all break into laughter is such a great intro. It fits perfectly with the tone of the song.

Three more tracks from the album here (http://soundcloud.com/total-control) give a good idea of their diversity; Kraftwerk/Eno-ish dark synth numbers, HC punk (most of their members are from that background), and nervy Wire/The Feelies-ish post-punk. Also you can legally download it here (http://hengebeat.bandcamp.com/).

I figured something like that was behind the song, but I didn't know the full extent. Also the lyrics in 115th Dream are amazing. I finally just decided last week to ignore the guitar work and the vocals and just listen to the lyrics, only, and they blew my mind. The ending to that song is hilarious and perfect.

Raw Power may have something to say about it.
I do prefer Fun House because it's slightly more fun, just as raucous and insane, but with a bit more of a groove to it. But trans, check out the other two Stooges albums as well, and every live performance you can find. They're all worth it. The first album is not quite up to par, as they were trying to be a bit more of a dark psychedelic garage band (John Cale of the Velvet Underground produced it), but it's still quite good and the first two tracks match anything of the other two albums.

It's really good. Somewhat inconsistent, but the high points are as good as any he has ever recorded.
If you enjoy the first track, check out Zola Jesus who is featured on it if you haven't already. She's much more darkwave-y with a lot of gothic touches than M83, but still keeps that same synth pop/dreamy aesthetic.

It's pretty good. Not a huge fan of the songs because they don't have Kozelek's lyrics, but he's a master of making a cover his own. The best ones I think are on the Red House Painter's album Songs for a Blue Guitar.

They've got a brand new remix comp out as well - pretty good. More polished and electronic sounding, with some hip hop thrown in. It lacks a bit of the unique character of the originals, but still worth a listen.

Yeah, it's great, especially for when you're feeling a bit isolated. I still prefer the noisier shoegaze overall, but when in the right mood nothing is better. I mostly save it for winter. Loveless in the summer, Souvlaki in the winter.

I have listened to this thing so much in the last month..such a great album, and you are 100% right - it's the aural equivalent of a proper Lynch film (or rather, the songs themselves are like scenes from his films -- dark, mysterious, dangerous..
I wanted to list my favorites, but that would be almost all of them. Even the weakest one (Lynch's TM "rap" song, Strange and Unproductive Thinking) is weirdly alluring.
Others' opinions may vary, but I think, in this order, the very best ones are:
1. Stone's Gone Up
2. Speed Roadster (has there ever been a better song about a psychotic stalker?)
3. Noah's Ark
3. Crazy Clown Time
4. These Are My Friends
5. The Night Bell With Lightning
6. She Rise Up
plus, I love Football Game..Heck, I really love the whole lp

A & M is my favorite of theirs and the 80s in general. Dazzle Ships is nearly as good, not as consistently great, but has what might be my favorite of their songs ("Genetic Engineering"). Chinese black/shoegaze/postrock metal? Bizarre sub-genre. Yep. Definitely nice and layered, though.
Really dig this. I can get behind this kind of metal! Just picked up their first album, which is great b/c I don't have enough to listen to already with Davis's list and all the other shit I already have lined up in the queue. ;)
This week has been Fela Kuti week. Something tells me most of next week will be as well...

What? How did you get a hold of it? I've checked their record label (out of print), and neither Itunes nor Amazon have it even listed. Might I be able to score mp3 files off you via a gmail email...

Soulseek. It's also on what.cd, but that one's invite-based and since it's bitch to keep that ratio high, I use it sparingly. Either way, I will get copy online for you, probably tomorrow when I'm back home with a stronger connection.

Released after I compiled my best of 2011 list, Solar Field's album, Until We Meet the Sky, will surely be one of the best ambient albums I hear all year.
This track is incredible.

Pretty cool track that I listened to based off someone saying they were a fan of the band on RT.
