Could not agree more Davis. The fact that it was one of the first songs I listened to when I was getting into music (thank you, Big Shiny Tunes, for when you were still good), adds a heavy nostalgia factor that makes it even greater for me.

Oddly enough, I've never checked out any other songs by them. If you have, how do they rate?

The whole album its off of - Glee - is brilliant. In my top 100. It's smart, sarcastic, sonically interesting, funky, and just all around a great '90s pop-album. Totally of its time - it is a relic - but I think it still plays well today.

I've heard their second album, and it's about 1/2 good. Never heard their 3rd. It's pretty hard to find.

Drinking in LA is just a brilliant song. Bran Van was poking fun at the electronic and deejay cultures, while still utilizing their techniques, while also making some hilarious social commentary on the climate of So. Cal. filmsters. I was living there when this song came out, and its genius instantly hit me; I couldn't even count how many people told me they were filmmakers, and yet they didn't have a think to show!

Feelin' kind a groovey, workin' on a movie...
YEAH RIGHT!

But there is also a sadness to the song, or at least some genuine emotions of not doing what you really want to be doing. It strikes a perfect balance of being genuine, cynical, and sarcastic.

Nice. Where are they playing? I'll have to go. Victor Wooten is a monster on that Drum-axe-simitar thing.

The last time I saw them was at the Concert at the Zoo, a few summers ago.

True confession time: this is absolutely one of my all-time favorite songs, and it's finally on YouTube! I urge you to check it out. Barty would love this, and so, I've included the politically-charged lyrics.

Rise Up! by Bobby Conn. Enjoy.

S0h0M0YGW4k

The word is out on the street
Caesar's house is growing weak
And all his generals are scared so you better be prepared
He gave the order to his pigs
Jail the men and starve the kids
But I can't help you baby when the empire falls

Things look good in Babylon, yeah the rich still get it on
But now they gotta build up a fence
To protect their decadence
And every year they build a little higher
Their necks are tighter in the wire
But I can't help you baby when the empire falls

You wonder what went wrong
Why can't we just get along?
Their televisions feed you lies
Market forces alibis
Every hour the class divide
Pushes us towards genocide
But I can't help you baby when the empire falls

I don't mean to frighten you but
Baby, what you gonna do?
Pretty soon now you gotta choose
Bet to win or you're surely gonna lose
'Cuz a winning smile ain't no defense
If you're sitting on the fence
'Cuz I can't help you baby when the empire falls

And I know the plan for you
And there's nothing, child, that I can do

Jesus! He came back
Jesus! High on crack
Jesus! Threw Him in jail
Jesus! Can't afford the bail
Yeah, the Man is strong
That's the reason for this song
And I can't help you baby when the empire falls

Rise up! It's your only chance
Rise up! It's your only chance
I can't help you baby when the empire falls

Funeral has a kind of ramshackle spontaneity, like a bunch of people getting together and by accident finding common points of interest and harmonizing to some pretty awesome tunes.

Neon Bible, on the other hand, is these same people locked in a room together for a year watching CNN, and trying to show how important and serious they are. The songs are way less interesting musically, and the production is way overblown. It is didactic without any energy.

The latest doesn't even have the overblown production. It is all one-paced mid-tempo dirges. Only The Sprawl II manages to stand out, simply because it is different.

Well, I love it. Maybe not as revelatory as Funeral, but I don't think the songs sound anywhere near as samey as you say. And isn't it just natural for them to gravitate away from the stuff they were singing about in their twenties? A band for our increasingly cynical times and all that? I don't get calling Neon Bible didactic, because [Antichrist Television Blues], for instance, isn't condemning anyone; it's pleading with them in an almost embarrassingly overtly emotional way. And even more importantly, for me, it's still a lot of fun to dance and sing along to in my car, just like I'd say 12 out of the 15/16 Suburbs tracks are

Listened to the new Arcade Fire for the first time last night. Now, I was disappointed with Neon Bible the first couple times before it really grew on me, so I'm trying to keep that in mind, but outside a few highlights I once again found this one disappointing. This was disappointing for different reasons. I just feels really... repetitive. I kind of got lost in the middle there and snapped back to at around track 14. I liked what I heard, I just wish it was a bit more distinct and varied. I'll give it a few more listens over the next couple days. Hopefully it progresses the way that Neon Bible did for me.

Totally. I've been listening to it and trying to figure out what's so wrong with it. It's actually inspired me to write a review, which hasn't happened in, I don't know, forever (the heaps of glowing praise it's garnered also had something to do with it). I get the feeling from listening to it that the band had only a handful of really solid, inspired songs, but were under some kind of pressure from their label to release an album. That's probably not the case, but I don't know. That webcast yesterday (particularly the interview where they laughingly advised young bands to not take any money for anything in advance) didn't do much to change my opinion.

I copied the songs to a playlist, deleted a whole bunch of them, made the album just over 40 minutes long, and it plays like a classic. One solid song after another. I think it's just overstuffed. Should have cut a few songs, worked harder on the ones they kept.

Also I still think that Neon Bible is the best out of the three albums Arcade Fire has released. That's just me, though.

I can think of plenty of contemporary R&B singles I like, but I can't really listen to a full album. Dam-Funk's Toeachizown and D'angelo's Voodoo are the only two in the last decade that spring to my mind as worthwhile, and the former's more of an 80's throwback.

Hmmm....not really digging this Orb/Gilmour album. It sounds so dated, and in a bad way. Very '90s techno, and not very interesting. The '90s are my least favorite era for electronic music, and this album sounds like all that pop-ambient-dub-house-downtempo stuff so abundant from the decade; you know, all those Ibiza Chillout/Downtempo Volume XXX collections. It's like The Orb regressed rather than progressed (there best album is still Pomme Fritz because it sounds like its from the future). From the preview video, I thought it was going to be a little more experimental with more field recordings and whatnot. There is a cool little folk-sy number towards the end of part 1, and it's nice, and part 1 ends in a more interesting way (less "tribal" and generic). Still need to listen to part 2, though.

Yeah. She's merely OK. It's kind of weird with her in the band. I mean you've got Lanois, Blade, and Johnson - Lanois one of the best producers and guitarists working today, and Blade and Johnson are both AAA musicians, two of the best studio/session musicians around. And then you have Trixie Whitley, a young vocalist who has yet to really find her voice. I can only imagine what this might have ended up sounding like had Lanois chosen a more seasoned singer (perhaps working with Emmylou Harris again? Or, even better, imagine Roisin Murphy on vocals....*drool*). The only thing I can think of is that he sees potential in Trixie, and thus wants to foster her career or something.

For now, you should be thinking "How in god's name did I live the last 13 years of my life on planet Earth without hearing every track of OK Computer, like, at least 100 times even if it was just through friends forcing it down my throat."

But yeah, amazing song obviously. :)

I only started listening to the band when I was in high school, I think. The first album I heard from them was Hail to the Thief.

But yeah, amazing song obviously. :)A second listening has revealed it to be great, yes.

Hahaha, I played this for some friends and now they're all listening to these guys, except that no one can remember their name. I think I've heard, "who's that guy, you know the one you played on the way to such and such?", about thirty times.

Thanks For The Killer Game of Crisco Twister-Minus the Bear. As much as I love this song, it doesn't really live up to the rather pointlessly long but funny title. It has a great opener, though: "And then we all bought yachts...."

This album is by far my favorite release of the year,

So good. My favorite track is probably "Afraid of Everyone".

I just love the line "but I don't have the drugs to sort it, I don't have the drugs to sort it out."

This is definitely a contender but I think my favorite album of the year is 'The Monitor'.

In The Court of the Crimson King-King Crimson. I can't get enough of this song. The notes are fantatic, the lyrics are wonderfully odd, and the timing for all the high points is fantastic. I think today I've listened to the song at least five, maybe more, time already.

I think so, although I'm not really sure what down tempo is. I get confused with all the different sub-genres.

I know this is "minimal" but is it also down tempo?

These guys both have stuff released on various netlabels. I post a ton of this stuff in the free sounds thread. Almost everything I listen to these days is on a netlabel, and available for free.

Doyeq'a latest is out on Passage - everything this label has released is amazing:

http://www.passagemusic.net/

Their newest from Gaston Arevalo is incredible.

I haven' heard from Adverb this year, but he and Doyeq had stuff out last year on a Russian netlabel:

http://electronicalabel.ru/releases/

I have a list of about 50 netlabels I check on weekly.

Creative Commons is basically just for artists who want to release their work and retain and define the copyright on it themselves.

You can read more about it here:

http://creativecommons.org/

It's really focused on sharing, so like an author could release an audio version of a book he's written under a CC and then grant musicians the ability to sample and use the audio in their own creations. It's just a much more liberal and open minded use of copyright that doesn't involve the government.

So most people are cool with reuse? Like in other media? Say maybe in a game?

Yes, usually so long as you give credit. I've had a couple of tracks used in indie films, and Qrazy here used a track in an education video he put together.
