Wow, damn. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has died from illness.

So young. He seemed like a good guy. It was nice to have a creative-type in charge of a corporation - he seemed to put creativity and artistry first, which is something that is increasingly rare in the AAA games space.

Act III is my favorite.

megladon8
07-16-2015, 06:38 PM
Yeah Act IV is definitely a weak point. Suddenly fighting a boss every 10 minutes, the layout of the world is a bit dumb, little-to-no exploration.

The opening 45 minutes are encouraging enough. Movement is typically cumbersome, but not really a nuisance. Pace is a bit staccato with quite a bit of cut scenes, looking straight out of a Roland Emmerich movie so that was kinda unnecessary. Graphics are moody, but it's all looking a bit chunky and fuzzy. Perhaps that's part of the style they went for, but it's a far cry from, yep, that game.

I had read on Reddit that there were known design issues like this for the PS4 controllers. There's a thin piece of plastic that falls out of place over the trigger sensor. You may be able to find a DIY fix online.

The jump in difficulty from Master to Torment 1 is a little silly.

I'm level 17 Paragon. Playing on Master is like playing on Easy - I'm surrounded by enemies and my health isn't even slighted.

But I go up one level of difficulty to T1 and suddenly the simplest enemy takes a million hits to go down, and I'm dying frequently.

I got into the Xbox Preview Program so I got to test out the backwards compatibility last night. I haven't owned a 360 in like 2 years but it automatically pulled up all my old arcade 360 games (that were on the backwards compatibility list) and had them ready to be downloaded which was cool. I played a few minutes of Hexic HD and everything runs smooth and is well integrated. I probably will rarely use the backwards compatibility but I know it's a feature that a lot of people have been clamoring for and it looks like it's going to work well.

I decided to look at my xbox.com profile just to check through all the stuff I had downloaded back on the 360 and holy shit had I bought a lot of Rock Band DLC. Even though the PS4 is my main system I'm getting the new Rock Band on my XB1 specifically so all this DLC can carry over.

These crossovers are potentially bad for gaming in my mind. The appeal for Mortal Kombat and WWE certainly has gone up with these other markets getting involved. I can't do that because I have very limited data available for download.

I've gotten to play the game for like 5 minutes.

To be honest, I don't think you're missing much.

I'm really trying to like it, because it seems like something I should love. It's difficult but fair, technical, Rogue-like with loot, and based on 80s' mech shows.

But there is something about that simply isn't grabbing me the way a game like this should, the way Binding of Isaac and Rogue Legacy did.

It's really bumming me out. I keep forcing myself to play it in hopes that something will click, because I want to love it.

I thought it looked stupid.

Now I find myself playing it almost every single day, and loving it to pieces.

Lesson is - always download the PSN games, even if you think they look bad.

It may be because of the Gat Out of Hell expansion, but there are a bunch of new costumes and a few new weapons. Mind you, these could be items from DLCs that I hadn't gotten, so, take that how you will. I didn't bother with any of the DLCs except ones that had new mission/quest content.

EDIT, oh, I didn't buy the Gat Out of Hell expansion. I've never been as "into" that character as the developers have been. Honestly, I never understood their obsession with an otherwise bland, cookie-cutter sort of "bad-ass."

From all the reviews, it sounds like the story is entirely unimportant in this one - it's all about the gameplay.

I was trying to figure out what you meant by character type, then I realized you were actually picking and choosing which abilities to focus on. Is that right? I was playing through it recently and reconsidered buffing up many of the powers to 100%, because by 100% they're pretty ridiculously overpowered. I'm also considering leaving some amount of damage taken from fire and explosions, and wonder if I could fore-go "no ragdoll on explosions," because I like the "recover" bit as your character goes flying. And again, most of the reviews say that the story in 5 is entirely unimportant, told mainly through audio logs that you can completely ignore. This one is all about the gameplay.

Hi gang - I'm playing Witcher 3 (still!), level 23, and trying to equip and upgrade Geralt's Feline gear, currently wearing the enhanced version. It'd be nice to have it upgraded all the way to Mastercrafted by the time I enter the endgame, but I need to be level 34 to wear that stuff.

Anyway, I'm at the point where I've recruited several people to battle the Wild Hunt at Kaer Morhan, and need to go to The Isle of Mists to find Ciri. My question to those of you who have completed the story is: am I approaching the end of the story (in which case I'm gonna work on the side quests and witcher contracts to level my guy up more), or do I have a ways to go in the story yet?

This past weekend I completed the first Metal Gear game I have completed since the first MGS - Ground Zeroes (I watched my buddy play through all of MGS2, and that was the last one I've seen in its entirety).

Kojima and co. have finally taken MGS into the modern era, with controls that make sense and are easy to use. I never once had a problem with dodging, aiming, standing, kneeling, hiding or sneaking. On top of that, the game looks amazing, and was a blast to play. I played through a few of the side missions as well.

I'm really looking forward to Phantom Pain.

Stayed up WAY too late last night playing Phantom Pain.

So good.

The prologue is a little long, but it's also brave and funny.

The first mission is great, and contains a hilarious exchange of dialog between Snake and Miller, and perfectly exemplifies Kojima's obsession with gear and accessories. At the beginning of the episode, while the credits are rolling, Boss's and Ocelot's eye wear gets a credit. And if you recall Miller's look, you'll appreciate how the joke carries through.

The whole forcing of co-op just doesn't appeal to me at all. That even in the campaign you are always with teammates is something I'm not particularly interested in with this series.

I'm hoping that it continues to push the story and universe in new and interesting direction, like 4 did, but I'm not nearly as excited as I was for the last entry 3 years ago. I might not even buy it, pending reviews.

Spun Lepton

All right, so I'm about 5 to 6 hours into Until Dawn. I may finish it tonight. Some horror fans may like to know, if you don't already, that the script was written mainly by Larry Fessenden. Yes, it purposely mires in slasher tropes. There's been a generous helping of Saw in it. But, I'm really enjoying it. Still, I have yet to see how grand their "Butterfly Effect" truly is. That will happen on the 2nd play-through.

Gameplay varies between: exploration, when you comb every area for "totems" and clues; decision-making, which, depending on the decision, could alter the course of events; QTE moments, usually during heavy action. The QTEs have consequences and you do not get do-overs.

Last night, I was playing a pair of characters who wandered the woods together. I'd found a totem, which are items that give you glimpses of upcoming events, good or bad, and which may or may not happen, depending on your choices. This one showed the character I was playing and their companion passing an item between each other. It was a clue that I should make that decision when that moment arrived. Not long after finding the totem, I made a dopey choice and set into motion a series of QTEs that I fucked up. My character died. Their companion became the focus for the rest of the scene. Eventually, I got to the scene that I had found in the totem ... but I had only one character! They couldn't pass the item off to the other character! I decided to pocket the item. That probably won't end well.

Peter Stormare is kicking ass all over this thing.

EDIT:

The story took a sharp left turn five or so hours in. This is no longer a slasher. Fans of Fessenden will love this.

I never thought that a Metal Gear game would be a favorite of mine, but here I am, ready to declare Phantom Pain a bona fide masterpiece.

This is one of the most complex and in depth games I've ever played. And not in terms of narrative. I'm talking exclusively about the systems and mechanics, and in how the game has nothing but the utmost respect for the player to get it.

The number of options and things available to do at any given moment are overwhelming. However, it's not the kind of thing like chasing down question marks on a map in The Witcher 3. All of the choices and options in PP have immediate consequences in each specific circumstance and scenario. And that the game rarely holds your hand or tells you how to approach a given situation is testament to its brilliant design, mainly because everything - no matter how complex - feels natural, and everything works exactly how you imagine it to work.

I'm constantly asking myself, "I wonder if I can do this?" or "I wonder if this will work?" and the answer is almost always YES! This is a game of "YES'es" in an industry that more often than not deals in "No's."

And while it's using established tropes and mechanics found in other games, Kojima and his team have honed and refined them to near perfection. It's a grand and epic experience that is simultaneously personal and immediate, and thus far the fat seems to be almost completely trimmed.

It's got exploration, stealth, action, base building, resource gathering, RPG elements, comedy, strategy and the kind of open-world shenanigans that modern gamerss crave, and yet it plays, looks and sounds better than just about anything else with any of these elements does.

And for once in a Metal Gear game, you can play for hours without ever being interrupted by a cut scene! As a matter of fact, after the prologue I haven't even seen a cut scene that lasted longer than a couple of minutes.

I am feeling that Dark Souls 1 level of obsession. And it feels great.

CSB time:

I had one of the most thrilling video game experiences I've ever had last night.

Playing Phantom Pain, I was tasked with infiltrating this Russian stronghold to free a doctor who was being held prisoner. I had just researched and required a sniper rifle, and wanted to try it out. I started by picking off the first layer of guards, one-by-one. But then I got greedy and careless, moved in too close and got spotted. Shit went bad, and went bad fast. Alarms were raised. The Russian COM officers tried to radio in for reinforcements. Unbeknownst to him, on a recent SIDE-OPS mission I had disabled the communications radars on the two closest bases (this, btw, wasn't a mission objective, just something I did). The stronghold was completely cut-off from the rest of their forces.

Enemy soldiers started shelling me with mortars, foot soldiers started moving in on my location. That's when I was saved by an act of God. A huge sandstorm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJrVZCbKxsE)moved in, and I moved with it. I was completely enshrouded by a blinding cloud of sand and dust, but I kept pushing forward. As enemy soldiers blindly entered my field of view, I popped them off with one head shot at a time, taking down a dozen men. I stayed within the confines of the storm until I came across my objective - the stairs leading down to an underground prison where the prisoner was being kept.

Unfortunately, there were too many lights down there, and a few guards around the corner. I found the power generator. Shut it off, and then hid in a dumpster. The last of guards came to investigate why the power had gone off, I busted out of the dumpster and took them down with three perfectly placed head shots. POP. POP. POP.

With all the Russians dead or unconscious, I had completely secured the stronghold, found the doctor, extracted him, and sent him back to Mother Base, and now I can upgrade my prosthetic arm.

This game is so bad-ass it hurts.

I've answered this question here like 4 times now. :)

I haven't seen a Metal Gear game in its entirety since MGS2. The last one I played in its entirety was MGS1.

I know very little about the story, and I'm pretty sure The Phantom Pain will be among the very best games I've ever played.

Just watch those videos I posted earlier, and play through Ground Zeroes (should take a couple of hours).

Or watch the Gametrailers 11 minute story so far.

Phantom Pain is very light on the story once you get past the prologue.

Ground Zeroes has been downloading for like a month and a half. Whenever that finishes, I'll play it, then check out The Phantom Pain.

I would just say skip GZ and buy The Phantom Pain. The main story mission in GZ is about 2 hours long, or about 10 minutes long once you know how to do it. Also, it only offers up a tiny slice of that TPP is - GZ is more of an extended tutorial on the new control mechanics.

Just watch a recap of Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes. You can get most of the back story in TPP by listening to the cassette tapes at any time.

The Phantom Pain continues to be remarkable in very single way. I am confident in placing it right along side Dark Souls as one of the very best experiences I've ever had gaming. It continues to be get more complex without getting more frustrating, and the missions continue to be exciting. One mission in particular I played this past weekend was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in a game. It was absolutely exhilarating; a nerve-wracking, tense, and nail-biting search and rescue mission culminating in me outrunning an attack helicopter in a small mech suit while simultaneously escaping a giant Metal Gear and a small squad of soldiers hot on my trail. It made me feel like a total bad ass.

One problem I've had with Ground Zeroes is that it just tossed me in with no context, tutorial or anything.

A friend at work said The Phantom Pain has a better structure and eases you in with control tutorials and the like.

Pretty much. I've played all of them numerous times, and I also run the MGS Wiki. Without this encyclopedic knowledge, The Phantom Pain is unplayable.

So one of the things I love about Dark Souls is the number of complex systems at play. There are items that have super cryptic, undocumented uses, and entire areas and NPCs you can miss if you don't do weird, archaic things. Even when I'm not the one figuring puzzles out, I love that the stuff exists.

The Phantom Pain has stuff like that, which is why it's scratching that itch more than games like Dark Souls II and Bloodborne did.

For instance: in the game you have a personal, smart data device called the iDroid. It's also a cassette player (love the anachronisms). You get cassettes with mission and background info. You also get short cassettes of phrases and sounds. One such sound is a recording of a dude taking a dump. OK. That's weird. You can also modify your iDroid with an external speaker.

There are also places where you can hide to wait out enemy alert statuses. One of those places are the outhouses scattered about. However, these aren't totally safe because sometimes you might be hiding in one and a dude will have to use it and then you'll be discovered.

But if you have the external speaker on your iDroid, and you have the cassette of the dude taking a dump, you can use that to trick the enemies into thinking that you're just another soldier using the outhouse, and then you won't be bothered.

This information is never presented to you. And there seems to be a ton of stuff like that. Stuff that lesser games would highlight and draw attention to "HEY! LOOK HERE! DO THIS!"

So many times I've asked myself "I wonder if I can do this?" And the answer is almost always "YES!"

I wasn't able to play the game yesterday, and now I'm totally jonesin' to go home and play it for hours on end.

D_Davis

BTW, I wouldn't touch The Phantom Pain unless you've reached Master status in the original NES Tetris. There's stuff that happens in that game that sets up a TON OF STUFF in TPP.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was a profound experience. It elevates video games as a medium for story telling. It is purely a story, being told to you at the slow pace of a good novel. Those who are complaining about the slow walking speed and wishing for a sprint button are playing it all wrong.

Whether you look at its apocalyptic take with a scientific or spiritual eye, it is affecting, emotional and rich. There is no exposition here, just 6 characters and their stories, and each story sheds a bit more light (no pun intended) on the overall narrative.

I haven't felt such a sense of melancholy from a game before. If The Last of Us were to be reimagined as a point-and-click adventure game by the likes of Clifford D. Simak, I imagine it would turn out something like this.

I finished The Witcher 3 on Monday, and decided to step away from it. I don't want to start a new game, because at the rate I play, I won't finish it before Fallout 4 comes out in November.

SO... I decided to play the first Dragonage Inquisition DLC, The Jaws of Hakkon. It's amazing how bright and vibrant the world of DOA is, compared to the world of The Witcher 3 (Skellige notwithstanding, which admittedly, is pretty damned gorgeous). Anyway, the Jaws of Hakkon takes place in a new area that has these huge trees like Endor, along with brightly colored vegetation ala Avatar. Pretty cool stuff. Oh, there's a new Inquisitor power I picked up as well.

Getting close to Arkham Knight completion, and the story is the best of the series so far. Even as video games in general, it's quite original in its use of storytelling and replay value. The batmobile stuff really isn't too huge, and some of it does get pretty fun, typically in the full speed battles.

The Batman world is huge enough where there's villains that get their due here. Man-Bat is actually pretty terrifying to play at times.

It's the Taken King patch - changes a lot of stuff in base game, but doesn't add any of the TK expansion stuff (at least until you pay for it).

Basically, it makes all games ready for the TK expansion.

If this is your first time back since this time last year, then yes. There's two huge expansions and two huge new RAIDs, strikes, weapons and everything. I want to check it out - looks cool. I hear the sound design is great.

But whenever I read something about a video game having as good a story as a piece of prose fiction, I almost always walk away thinking that the person who said that probably hasn't read too many great books. To this day I still can't recall a game with a narrative story as good as even the most mediocre book I've read. I've encountered games that have given me amazing experiences, and emotional rides as good as any book or movie, but when it comes to the actual writing and narrative, this is never the case. It always has to do with how the gameplay conveys the story for me.

So I'm hoping that the coll SF stuff in SOMA is conveyed through interesting game play.
