They've done a pretty incredible job staying within the look and style of the world Jackson and WETA created. It's nice to see variety and personality on the orc side, which felt only just barely touched on here and there in the movies. But did they need to secure any rights from the Tolkien estate to do these games? I can't imagine after the Hobbit fiasco that the family would be willing to ever allow the rights to get away from them again. I didn't play the first game, tho I watched some people play it. Looked fun. Looks like there might be more variety in this one.

This just shot up to Red Dead 2 levels of excitement.

"Our first objective would be to break through the main gate" the voiceover intones.

In the next shot we see our hero casually scaling the castle's wall in 1 second Ezio Auditore style.

Is this a different game from the Genesis version? Because the Genesis game is a wild-ass ride... it's actually more a Batman sh'mup than a platformer. Hard as hell.

Yep! The Genesis one has the same name but was produced/released by a different company. The SNES game is more deliberately paced but more stylistically impressive (I think).

Also, been dipping my toes back into gaming the past few months after years of not giving too many damns. Picking up on things I've missed that're considered classics. So far, Limbo was excellent, Braid stymied my brain too much (also, wasn't thrilled by the storytelling choice of just having you straight-up read text - more interested in holistic storytelling), almost done with the original Zelda (manageable once you make your own map with graph paper) and through two colossi in Shadow of the Colossus.

Pretty simple concept that has different levels of difficulty. You have a bomb. Your co-op partner(s) have the manual. You need to explain to them what you see and they will tell you how to defuse it. If you dont do it in the time allotted, you die. :)

The original Zelda was actually a little more fun to catalogue than to play through and finish, with so many of those old-school techniques for gaming intact. Killing enemies for rupies and hearts got dull (yes, there are medicine bottles), the puzzle clues were often confusing, and a few important item discoveries amounted to the equivalent of the original Metroid's bomb-everything tedium. The designers do a hell of a lot with a little (the item-switching is forward-thinking), but I think this is another series that really found its mojo on subsequent systems (huge fan of Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, before the series got too hand-holdy with its helper characters).

Also, the colossi in Shadow of the Colossus are tough. Think I spent half an hour just on colossus number three (the one where you have to get it to club the ground, then race up its club). Let's not discuss how long I was shooting arrows at its midsection like a moron.

And love how uncomfortable I feel after beating one. Just jammed my sword into the beast's head, and it had this look on it like, "Hey, what happened?" (I know the twists to the game, but it still works.)

People are hung up on the Andromeda facial "animations" but I've seen so many incredibly stupid and HUGE bugs in the game in all these playthrough videos that it's kinda obvious that the game was still some way from finished when it was released. This is kind of an understatement but Andromeda playable world is unbelievably huge. Technical bugs aside, the game does not do a good job explaining the economy system (which is broken), consumables, weapons, weapon mods, armor, armor mods, etc. Takes a while to figure all that out and what's valuable and what isn't.

That being said, I'm still playing the shit out of this game.

What's weird about this thread is no one's talking about Nier Automata. It's maybe the most interesting thing I've played since... well, Nier. If you're interested in seeing cool things done with video games and narrative, you should probably be playing Nier Automata.

More like let's discontinue it, driving the demand for it higher than even before, because scarcity will be an even greater threat when people know we're willing to take our ball and go home. Then we wait till we need a cash injection, announce the same model/a sequel model, and get a guarantee to sell out every single unit.

The internet reaction to the SNES classic is pretty funny and on point. Some of my favorite tweets:

"We at Nintendo have decided to discontinue the SNES mini before any have been made because y'all were just too excited to give us more money."

"Breaking: 10 Lucky Winners who find one of these Golden Tickets in Switch boxes will be given opportunity to purchase the SNES Classic."

What is the appeal of the NES classic? Can't you just get a classic controller and play those games on the Wii or whatever? Is it just nostalgia?

At $60 USD and with thirty games (which Nintendo sells on each of its consoles for $5 or so a shot), the NES Classic costs considerably less than the $150 just getting the games legally on your Wii/Wii U/Switch will (of course, most likely, you're interested in 10 to 15 of the games at most, but still it's not a bad deal when though of that way). Further, it includes the console and a controller, so that's a lot of savings if you don't have a console. The market for something like this consists, I think, of a lot of people who have no interest in keeping up to date with contemporary consoles (my wife, for example), in addition to some Nintendo diehards. Its easy portability and the shared nostalgia for the games is a huge factor.

Also, it looks like an NES (but smaller and therefore cuter) and has an authentic-looking NES controller. The nostalgia value on something like that is really high. Like really goddamn high.

Edit: I do wonder how successful a SNES and N64 classic would be. They have, I think, overall a less iconic set of games and less generation-defining nostalgia value. But then I didn't have a SNES growing up and I'm in my mid-thirties, so I probably don't have the best perspective on this.

04-27-2017, 11:13 AM
Just by dicking around in The Division early on I was able to put down a goon who had a big old sniper rifle. Makes life so much easier during encounters now. Mission are really tough, but I feel pretty smug when completed. It's supposed to be a co-op game, and perhaps there will come a time when progress will be halted permanently, but I never liked co-op. I want to beat missions all alone, I wanna have that feeling of total superiority.

Is Far Cry 5 a western?! Perhaps an Urban western, but the promo movies do not hint at a traditional western in the least. In fact, it reminded me more of the upcoming game Days Gone and possibly even a sort of The Division with a world gone to hell, humans turned into killers, a sort of Mad Max, but set in Montana.

I got small The Last of Us vibes also, and even some Resident Evil 4.

Really dug the hell out of the first game, thought the third game was alright. I actually never got around to playing the 2nd one.

I also know I'm in the huge minority on this, but I absolutely loved Other M. God damn that game was such a damn good game, and by far my favorite game on the Wii (in fact, it might be the only game on the system that I actually liked, outside of Wii Sports. The Wii fucking sucked, y'all), yet everyone else seems to hate it. :(

I don't know how we'd even begin to have a conversation about Other M. Apart from the charge pickups and post-game exploratory phase, I despised it.

I have probably never before felt a more profound sense of exploration than in those games. I'm talking hairs on the back of your neck stuff, like Indiana Jones in the map room discovering the location of the arc of the covenant.

Admittedly, I skipped the 2nd one, but part 3 is a classic, just like the first one. Love the pervasive sense of loneliness during my travels, the desolate beauty on display, the stunning control methods with the lock on function and the tough, but awe-inspiring boss encounters. And yes, the Wii's control methods added a totally chill icing on the cake.

Knowing what I know now, and that you adored part I, I must respectfully inform you that it's a mistake not playing part 3.

Remasters of all 3 for the Switch would not be unwelcome.

I was just afraid it would be like part 2. I'll get on it. Still need to finish up Skyward Sword.

From what I recall, Prime 3 was more similar to Prime Hunters for the DS in terms of its overall layout, which was also a pretty fun, if more simplified, version of the Prime games.

That open world Spidey game looks like a huge amount of fun. If we get to do things like try and stop Rhino as he rampages down a crowded street, or have a sky scraper to sky scraper battle with Doc Ock, I am so in.

I love the first one and mostly enjoyed the two sequels. My favorite bits of Prime were its holistic key/gate system (the classic Samus thing where barriers are environmental and you "unlock" them with new physical abilities or weapon systems), the faux-organic level design, and how the new scan system made me feel like a space archaeologist. The only complaint I could level against it is that it's almost an exact schematic duplicate of Super Metroid, but who cares?

Echoes had some great design and the same excellent control scheme, but the key/lock system became more basic, and the portal-hopping resulted in some needlessly obtuse level design (e.g. a lot of one-way-only rooms). In that way, I completely agree with you. And the Dark World itself got awfully boring in a hurry, with its uniform purple/black color scheme and ambient noise (instead of score).

[Once you get the Light Suit, it graduates from "fun" to "excellent."]

Corruption, again, great design, excellent control, fair utilization of Wiimote mechanics, but overcompensated for Echoes' sometimes-maddening world design with a way-too-directed sense of action and loss of exploration. It takes about an hour of Federation directives before you actually head off on your own. Once you do, it levels up and satisfies. Big fan of how a "satellite" room lets you launch probes into space and learn the locations of pickups you've missed.

I'd grade them as A+, B+, and B+. They're all worth playing, though, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy disc is one of the best things ever, if you have a Wii.

I'd definitely recommend the original Prime if you have a Cube or a Wii.

Duke I can't imagine you wouldn't like the first Prime. I adored it. Especially everything DaMU said. It had a feel of Zelda in a way, when you obtain that new tool, you can then get in the next area.

With your description of part three, I'm definitely going to play that next.

Yeah, I think it was the gamecube one that kept me with that system for a little bit longer.

I think it was Resident Evil 4 that was the final game for that system for me.

Heh. RE4 was the only reason I bought a game cube. Then capcom fucked me and announced it for PS2 like a month later.

There were quite a few killer games. I enjoyed the hell out of Metroid Prime, Echoes, Rogue Leader, Smash Melee, Eternal Darkness, RE4 (although Duke points out Capcom dropped the exclusivity in the final months), Viewtiful Joe, F-Zero GX, and the Resident Evil remake. Also enjoyed non-exclusives like Spider-Man 2 and Tony Hawk 3, with its absurd combos.

Skytown was a great world and introduced a rail-type travelling system long before Bioshock Infinite would repeat it.

The MP games trigger the imagination. It wouldn't be exagerated to say that, while at work, I was daydreaming about whether a possible solution that was coalescing in my mind would be the right one.

For sure. The sequels each had one jaw-dropping new alien location. Corruption had Skytown, and Echoes had that microchippy Sanctuary Fortress.

In yet more news, Shadow of the Colossus PS4 won't be a remaster, but a full-blown remake with for instance a more modernized control scheme.

Still playing The Division. This is the most exhilarating game I have played in a looong time that involves shooting weapons.
I feel that way about Overwatch.

Picked up Horizon: Zero Dawn this week. Still super early on, but it seems promising.

Hyuna in Just Dance 2018 is the real megaton of E3.

I mostly agree with DaMu on the Prime trilogy. I'd probably drop Echoes to a B- tho because the dark world stuff really bummed me out. Everything else was solid. Corruption is definitely worth playing and my second favorite of the trilogy and Metroid fans should not be sleeping on that. I really liked the boss fights against the Hunters, too. Something a little different for the series but it works. Very cool atmosphere.

Very curious to see what Nintendo does now with a Prime 4.

So, I'm enjoying Horizon Zero Dawn quite a bit, but it's not sucking me in like my favorite games.

Which got me thinking, I seem to find open-world games a bit less engrossing than games with a more linear storyline (e.g. Uncharted). I even liked Rise of the Tomb Raider less than Tomb Raider because it was more open-worldy.

Having to run around and level-grind or gather supplies or even getting distracted by side quests seems to take away from a game's impact for me. It doesn't help that no matter how much thought is put into a game, the side-quests eventually begin to feel like chores.

Given the larger trend toward open-world games, I'm probably relatively alone in this. But I just want to be told a good story with inventive gameplay (I think Uncharted and The Last of Us are really the pinnacle of this). I don't need a simulacrum of how the character would actually survive in the world.

The way things are going, the next Metroid: Prime will probably be open-world.

I'm with you on this, for sure. Well put. Tomb Raider was way superior to Rise of the Tomb Raider and that's probably the main reason.
