I saw her at the Kimmel Center in Philly, which is a real swanky venue where the Philadelphia Orchestra plays and things of that nature. So the crowd was seated the entire time. I had a good sight line. She's kinda hot.
Oh god, she's gorgeous. I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

true dat. She killed it at lollapalooza. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to see her again live.
I mean just listen to this live BBC performance from a few years ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcc7-we_2DM) (especially at 2:08 into it). What comes out of her at that moment gives me goosebumps.

Missed them last night unfortunately. Tickets for the show sold out weeks ago. Did the lead singer get into the big plastic ball and "crowd surf"?
Went and saw Pissed Jeans instead. They only played five or six songs but they put on a pretty good, lively and loud show. The lead singer is a madman. He was gyrating on everything on stage. He even armpit farted into the mic at one point.

This time, rather than emerging from a flying saucer, each member of the Flips was born out of a giant, glowing, pulsating vagina. It was wild. And Wayne also emerged in the ball. Only it was deflated, symbolizing the womb I'll assume.
And their new songs are amazing. Some of the best I've heard. They sound like a rock band again.

Looks like The Vivian Girls are coming to a really small venue nearby, I might have to check that show out. Anyone ever see them live?
Saw Heaven and Hell tonite! It was boss. Iommi is badass. It's like he's murdering the Pope without even trying. I missed the opener (Coheed and Cambria... aw, shucks), but the expensive tickets were still worth it. My favorite song of theirs, Neon Knights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjKNs1Qz5u8), was the encore and it blasted me.

It's impossible to convince someone who has never been to a Flips concert of just how awesome and life-affirming they are. I never understood the people who followed the Dead until the Flips started putting on similar shows. It's all about the experience. Even if you don't like the music, I believe it would be impossible to not have a good time at a Flips show. It's all about dancing, laughter, and the experience.

Um, like, HOLY CRAP, dude. Rarely does a chance at redemption like this come along.
So. Fall '90 I get a call from my buds, asking me if I wanted to go to see They Might Be Giants with them. I had never heard of them at that point, and the show was on a Friday, and it would be a pain to get home from college in time and blaa blaa blaa, so I passed.
So, the next day, when I see my friends, they play the album Flood for me, and it instantly became one of my favorite albums ever, and in the intervening years, I've been kicking myself for not having seen TMBG that friday when I had the chance.
And now, I find out that November 3rd they will be performing the album Flood in its entirety in my home town! I am STOKED.

Ah, it's so nice when you go into a show with super high hopes, and the show actually meets or exceeds those hopes.
Me, I've got high hopes for Los Straitjackets Christmas Bonanza which rolls through Mpls December 12th. But then again, I've seen Los Straitjackets in excess of 10 times and they've never disappointed. Ever.
I know I've talked these guys up before, but if anybody here likes instrumental surf rock, ala Link Wray, these guys are the bomb. And they are at the height of their powers around the holidays. You all should catch them if they show up in your neck of the woods.

I went to a concert last night in Irvine - the lineup was Asheroth, Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, and Blink 182.
Asheroth was okay. They seemed good-humored, but I have a general aversion to white guys throwing their arms around while rapping about ill-defined subjects.
Taking Back Sunday had a good lead singer. I never quite understood what he was singing about, but he has good stage presence. Guy was whipping his microphone around like Roger Daltrey. Their songs felt somewhat interchangeable. No doubt the acoustics were little help to separating the "sound" of each song.
Weezer surprised me. I thought Rivers would be unlikely to play the hits, but that's all they played, and they played them well, clearly experienced after nearly twenty years of touring. Fantastic stuff, efficient. They busted out "Surf Wax America," which made me incredibly happy.
I love Blink 182, and they delivered. Their stage banter was childish and stupid, but, hey, it's Blink. They played an hour-and-a-half long set, and there were a lot of standout moments. First off, Tom and Mark hugged at the beginning (nice to see after the long rift). Second off, their self-titled album dominated the set for a while, and they even played my very favorite Blink song, "Not Now." Finally, their encore had Travis on an elevated, rotating, tilting drumset platform while he just ripped.
Very fun, considering the last big concert I went to was New Kids on the Block in 1990. Tiffany opened for them.

Yeah... He definitely got the storytelling gene from Steve. Justin just gets up there, acoustic guitar in hand, and sings his heart out. His album "Midnight at the Movies" is a decent representation of his music, although when he plays the stuff live it's much more urgent and energetic. I've never seen him with a band. It has only been him, the guitar and the audience.

Yeah, I'm going to do my best to tune that stuff out. I love his classic stuff, but his recent output leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hoping he keeps that to a minimum. And hopefully he takes advantage of the fact that it's Friday the 13th and throws a twist into the show. Should be a good time either way.

Jandek was fucking amazing; as someone who has found his myth fascinating but never really bought into his alleged musical maverick genius, I was completely unprepared for such an emotional rollercoaster of a show... he was backed by a bassist and drummer who were improv-ing to his stream-of-consciousness lyrics, and did an amazing job at tuning in and playing off his intensity. It really reminded me a lot of the clips I've seen of Can's early 70's freeform shows, and it similarly got very groovy and krautrockin' in the final stretch of the 90 minute set (it was just one continuous piece).
The closest I've come to experiencing a waking nightmare in a live music form, and instantly one of my top 5 favorite shows ever.

Yeah, very dense pop textures. The keyboards were awesome (there were two keyboard players who both played guitar!) and the one keyboard player also plays guitar and violin, but I guess her violin broke.

For me, Ariel Pink is always going to be the "King of Pop of the 2000s". Too bad you didn't like Magic Kids, they sorta reminded me of the Beach Boys. Did that other band, Pearl Harbor open too? Now that was some boring crap.

Yeah, Pearl Harbor was definitely terrible, but I found Magic Kids to be even more nauseatingly bad. They sorta reminded me of the New Kids, if that gives you an idea.
All this makes me wonder though is what Ariel Pink is thinking taking these bands on tour. Does he want to make himself look better or something?

New Kids? I can see Magic Kids' act becoming overly bubblegum-y after a while, but for the time being, it's nice to hear. Once Pitchfork gives them the BNM, I'll stop listening.
I'm seeing Wye Oak this Tuesday in Philadelphia, which I'm pretty excited about
Also, I have the opportunity to go to one of these Arcade Fire/Spoon shows next month, but I think I might skip it, because I've heard Madison Square Garden stinks for concerts. On the other hand, just typing that made me realize how absurd it is that I'd pass up the chance to see those two bands back-to-back on the relative cheap, so I dunno

Ever go to a show that would have been much better were it not for the audience? I did last Saturday, when I saw the band Los Hombres Calientes perform.
Los Hombres is a jazz band that mixes hefty amounts of Latin & Creole into their sound. Imagine Dizzy Gillespy meets Dr. John meets Tito Puente and you'll be close. As you could imagine, this is the type of music you would wanna listen to in a place where you could get up, whoop & holler, and move around with other lively individuals looking to get into the music.
Unfortunately, we were instead stuck in an orchestra hall (which is a great place to see sit-down music) surrounded by a bunch of people whom I'm thinking were checking out the band expecting a more mellow show (frontman Irvin Mayfield is a jazz trumpeter of some repute) and were taken aback by the exuberance of the music and of the band.
Many people were holding their hands over their ears. The person in front of me even turned back and started barking at me when I was going "whoo-hoo!" after a particularly awesome rendition of Girl From Ipanema.
I was like, sheesh, man. If you can't stand loudness, either bring earplugs to a show or stay the hell home.

Went to the Fuck Yeah Fest on Saturday, which was a lot of fun. Didn't get there 'til 7, but still managed to see some quality acts:
Dead Man's Bones (Ryan Gosling's band) - suprisingly good and a lot of fun. They had about a dozen kids up on stage with them who were in a costume contest and sang backup for a few songs.
Ted Leo - Only heard about 15 minutes, but he was serviceable. Never been much of a fan, though he had good energy.
Man Man - Amusing and pretty out there. I'm a fan of xylophones integrated into rock and this was heavy on the xylophones.
Mountain Goats - I've always hated Darnielle's voice and this didn't do much to change my mind. They were all electric and not quite as boring as most of their albums, so it wasn't the worst way to kill 20 minutes between two bands I wanted to see.
!!! - I like Myth Takes and their new album's ok, but man, these guys were a blast to see live. For an outdoor fest, I was impressed by how great they sounded. The lead singer was hilariously flamboyant and they were super high energy for the whole hour.
Panda Bear - Set started off veeery shakey with a total remix of a couple songs where the vocals and guitar were almost completely drowned out by the electronics. But after the first 15 minutes, he really started to come into his own with great renditions of "Comfy in Nauticaa" and "Tomboy". The rest of the set was more chill and watery, but weird enough that probably on 2/3 of the crowd stuck around 'til the end.
Fun night overall and more than I'd expect for $25.

stoned crowds, in my experience, seem to be into the music more. dancing and such. i.e. when i see jammier bands there is dancing in the aisles, everyone seems to be having a great time. when i see indie/jazz shows it's generally just people standing there and perhaps tapping their feet. i'm always the latter but i enjoy the atmosphere of the former.

Yep. De la Rocha, Morello (who can produce sounds out of his guitar I'd never even heard before), and the other two. And they did a shitload of songs - came back a couple of times because the audience kept roaring for them. A religious experience. Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bwDlk6jLoQ).
Queens of the Stone Age, on the other hand, forgettable. Lacked volume, even.

Saw Gorillaz at the ACC on Thursday. Damon and his company of 20+ musicians at any given time (including Mick Jones and Paul Simonon for the whole thing as well as De La Soul, Bobby Womack, Little Dragon, etc. for the necessary guest appearances) put on a really phenomenal show. Great use of a stadium for somewhat atypical music for that sort of setting.
"Glitter Freeze" hits so hard when it has that on-stage set-up and that volume going for it. Also have a new love for the old stuff too, seeing as Plastic Beach is already my favourite of theirs so far and easily in my top 10 of this year.

Still reeling from the Built to Spill show last night. I was expecting them to be good, but they were fucking unstoppable. Was actually talking to somebody who'd seen them 4 times before and he said they'd never sounded this good, so I guess I got lucky. Played for almost 2 1/2 hours and were mesmerizing and high energy every second. Definitely the best live guitarwork I've ever seen/heard live - they sounded amazing. Kudos to the sound guys cuz I imagine it's not easy to get a 3-guitar lineup to sound that good. One of the best shows I've been to. Not sure how I never saw them live until now since they're in LA once or twice a year, but I won't be missing them in the future.

This was a pretty great show. I wish they weren't so heavy into the visual stuff; having a giant video screen showing all their videos synced up to the songs was somewhat distracting. Still, they put out great energy. As much as I love their new album, I was wishing that this was 2001 so that Del the Funkee Homosapien would show up and "Rock the House." I had an all in all great time up in Seattle. I can't wait to get back up there for whatever.

So this show was pretty weak. The crowd was horrible, Marnie's voice was not so great and they only played for 40 minutes including at least 10 minutes of bantering while the drummer continuously fiddled with his kit. Girl can shred, no doubt, but I won't go out of my way to see her live again.

Pretty much, anywhere really. Nearly of their albums are long, one-hour pieces that sit combine noir-ish piano/bass/drums jazz, Terry Riley/Steve Reich minimalism and the groove of krautrock. Drive By, Sex, Aquatic or Chemist are good places to start; I'd give Chemist the edge since it's 3 x 20min tracks, which is better for variety.

J Mascis was brilliant. He has this lazy-Kung Fu-master look going on as he weaves between blissfully clean tones and fuzz-dripping distortion effortlessly. They pretty much always have something to focus on being as big of a band as they are, and they basically just stick to their music the entire time, spanning all their albums, without being predictable. Only a few minutes of chit chat to say hello, and promote their Haiti charity.

Saw Broken Social Scene on Thursday and they were unsurprisingly great. A few technical issues (to be expected when you have up to 5 guitars going at once) and Kevin Drew went a tad overboard with the "love everybody" interjections between songs, but musically, they were amazing. Duran Duran was playing across the street the same night, so they joked around about them a lot (lovingly; they were definitely fans) playing riffs from "Rio", "Girls on Film", etc., so it was a really light-hearted show. They played almost if not all of their self-titled, most of You Forgot it in People ("Shampoo Suicide" unfortunately being the big one I missed) and about half of the new album. Encored an amazing cover of Modest Mouse's "3rd Planet" and "It's All Gonna Break".
Tons of fun and though I only caught the last 4-5 songs of the opening band, an Aussie band called The Black Ryder, they were really good. Boner, have you heard of them? Kind like Jesus and Mary Chain blended with a goth/stoner rock sound with a hot chick playing guitar and lead vocals. Saw Spectrum last night and they were even better than I expected. The set had a lot of Spacemen 3 tunes, which is obviously a good thing, and a great mix of slow/spaced-out and noisy/aggressive. It might've been the loudest show I've ever been two, particularly the second half which was drenched with feedback and distortion. Sonic Boom's voice still sounds great and he really made sure everything sounded top-notch, which was impressive for such a small venue. Saw Battles on Monday night. Pretty good show, but disappointing that they only played stuff from the new album. High energy and fun, but made me realize even more what a step down Gloss Drop is from Mirrored.
Beach Fossils on Tuesday night, however, were flat-out amazing. They added some speed and muscle to their music, so the show was surprisingly intense. LA crowds are notoriously laid back (aka comatose), which made the crowd-surfing and general rowdiness during the last few songs all the more enjoyable. The most fun I've had at a show in a long time. Craft Spells, who opened for them, were pretty dang good themselves.

It was good to see him rocking out the theremin a few times too. :)
They've actually been getting better over the years.

Never mentioned the two Thurston Moore/Kurt Vile shows I went to about a month back. Each headlined one night, on which the opener kindly held back their A-game and the headliner tore it up. Well, Thurston's sets were all acoustic, but more elaborate arrangements and such on the second night. Was only planning to go one night, but ended up w/tix both nights when one of my friends had to bail last minute. It still thoroughly entertaining and impressive less than 24 hours later.

Saw The Men and Milk Music last night. Hadn't heard anything by the latter, so they really took me by surprise. One quality song after another, sound kinda like a heavier version of Dinosaur Jr. but with enough of their own sound and other influences in the mix to really work. Definitely a band I'll keep my eye on now.
The Men were a bit disappointing, only because of high expectations. They were, as advertised, very intense, but they played 5-6 songs, only two of which were from Leave Home ("Lotus", probably the weakest track and "Bataille", which they ended the show with and fortunately absolutely destroyed). The other songs were still pretty good, but for such a short set I kinda wanted to hear more of their songs that I love. Still, a veeery well-spent $7.

So, the Metallica show was... interesting. Imagine a room full of CRM & management consultants, starched shirts, dress pants, fancy ties and all, crammed into an arena (I was dressed the part too). And then the lights went down, a clip from Good Bad Ugly played, and every hand shot up... holding either an iPad or an iPhone. Then Metallica came out, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich looking like dads, and they started their set.
The instant they started playing I remembered why I don't go to these types of shows anymore. I had arrived about an hour earlier to stake out a decent spot (15 feet from the stage. As close as I'll ever get to guys as big time as Metallica I figure). When the show started, instantly the floodgates were opened, and a herd of assholes from the back started stampeding their way through everyone and slamming the people in the front against the stage itself.
All it took is one song for me to say "fuck this" and leave. There was an awesome DJ playing upstairs, pinball in the other room, and free beer to be had everywhere.

Yep. AMAZING show from beginning to end. St. Vincent accompanied The National on several songs, and they played through the standard encore break until they were literally forced off. Sharon van Ettan and Neko Case were both wonderful, and everyone was endearing and witty on stage. Had an incredible time.

Kitchen's Floor was solid. It was at a small record store, so obviously they had to hold back noisewise, but it was a really good set. I'll definitely check out their new album. I'm especially psyched for Total Control - I keep going back to that album and it's really been growing on me.

Considered going to this, but already saw TVotR earlier this year (fun, but I was tired as shit), Panda Bear was fairly underwhelming (though I love his albums) and I can't stand Arctic Monkeys. I've heard Warpaint is really good live, so that's a plus. But yeah, I have no idea how they'll work set times with 5 acts! My guess is something like 30-30-45-45-45, though either way, that's a lot of good music.

I just saw Weekend last night and was very impressed. Sports is a great album, but I wasn't sure how well they'd transfer the echoey vocals and heavy feedback to a live show. Very well is how - loud intense show and by the end, I was regretting not bringing ear plugs.

Wow, I got lucky and got tix to see them in April in Santa Barbara (3-hour drive for me) for $88 w/Ticketmaster. They've always sold out within a few minutes, but I got lucky and actually got through since I was refreshing the second they went on sale. When I looked to see that they were playing in Seattle I decided I had to go. When I looked to see about tickets in Seattle, and that they were sold out, going for $250+ on ebay and the like, I decided that I needed to go somewhere else. Santa Barbara would work better since it's closer to where I have family so I could fly down and stay with them, but those tickets are way more expensive now than even Seattle.
I'm pretty sure it'll be one of the best concert experiences of my life, I'm just wary spending that much for a couple hours of entertainment. I need it to be a life experience or some shit.

Personally, I'd take front row upper level. Should give a better angle on the stage and cuts out the chance of having a-holes in front of you ruin the show. That's usually where I go for more chill shows. Plus, it's not like there'll be much moshing, crowd-surfing or dancing going on, so the lower level doesn't offer much unless you can get seats near the front.

I went to the Portland show. Got to say I was surprisingly bored by Dinosaur Jr.'s Bug performance. Their live versions sounded too close to their album versions, with only slight variations when they did breakdowns. I'm saying this being a big fan of Bug. I would've liked to see some liveliness from the band as well. With the exception of one of the guitarists, the rest of them seemed distant. Actually left about three quarters of the way through. I did really enjoy their interview with Rollins and Scratch Acid's energetic renditions of their songs. David Yow must be dreading each stage dive more and more these days.

I saw Mogwai for the first time and they were just amazingly talented. The only disappointment was the set list, which was mostly from their most recent albums. At least they closed on Mogwai Fear Satan which was, of course, totally epic.
I'd love to see Destroyer; really should've been paying attention to where he's touring since Kaputt blew me away. I have Atlas Sound coming up next Friday, then Raincoats in March, Radiohead in April and Spiritualized in May. Won't be able to make many more shows since my new job has me working weeknights for 5-6 months, but at least the ones I'm going to should all be pretty great.
Nice. I might see Atlas Sound and am definitely seeing Spiritualized in May as well. They kicked ass a couple years ago in Portland at Berbati's Pan. I had one or two beers but felt happily drunk/high leaving that show. Hope they include soulful back up singers again.
