I typically don't go to concerts. They are expensive, I usually don't like the preceding bands, and they seem to always start very late.

With that, the only bands I would see right now are The Arcade Fire and The Roots.

Didn't go to many shows myself:

* Pet Shop Boys
* Lindsey Buckingham
* Feist
* Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts (walked out on this one)
* Los Straitjackets w/ Big Sandy
* MC Chris

I think that's it for 2007 shows. I was pondering seeing The Police on their reunion tour on account of me being such a fan back when they were together, but one look at the ticket price and it was "fuuuuuck you, Sting".

Shows I have tickets to see in 2008:

* Pink Martini
* Dianne Reeves

This year, I just saw TV on the Radio... I think. And that was an excellent concert. There might have been something else. However, I'm pretty much done with concerts, unless it's someone I'm a major, major fan of who I really want to see live. By the time a concert's over, my back aches and I can't hear anything--even less than I can during the concert, since mostly I can't really hear anything the vocalist has been singing. Also, I feel pressured to dance sometimes, and that's horrible for me and for everyone else if I actually succumb.

I'd rather take my $12 to $30 and buy an album or two.

I just don't know what happened. I was absolutely sure they'd be the only band to redeem my dismal recent track record of gigs, since their live album is one of my faves and they've rocked in all the clips I've seen 'em in. But they were merely workmanlike and competent, with little presence aside from Doug's insanely twitchy singing. My biggest peeve was that they only played one track from Perfect From Now On - Randy - and they turned it into a boring-ass Phish jam for the encore, which ended the night on a serious bum note.

They did play "Carry the Zero", "You Were Right" and "The Big Dipper" though, as well as a kickass cover of Eno's "Third Uncle", and I guess they were good overall. Still, I left plagued by emptiness from the disappointment.

Here's to hoping that Battles in the next few weeks perks my summer up.

Yeah, that totally sucks. There's nothing more deflating than a bad show from a band you like a lot. I had that experience with Joseph Arthur last year, and it put a pretty big damper on my opinion of his music.

I included BTS in my concerts list since I did really enjoy their show, but was left a little disappointed as well. It was at a festival, for starters, so it was more brief than it ought to, more limited, and the band also had to confront some technical problems which prompted it to start twenty minutes late and with general distaste (Doug seemed a bit sore). Still they played energically, but they absolutely ignored There's Nothing Wrong With Love (my favourite of theirs - nostalgia, etc) and stuck too much to their lastest (which is very cool - but given this was their first and only performance in the country since 1994 or so, they could've been more anthological). I eagerly await their return, next time in some venue if it's possible.

What'd you think of the New Porno's show? After thinking about it more, it was a lot better than what I had it ranked as. It was a total crowd pleaser. They came back for two encores and took requests. They even played Letter from an Occupant after me and my friend's constant badgering.

Upcoming shows:

The Magnetic Fields, Town Hall, 2/21/08 (bought tickets already)
Thurston Moore / MV+EE & the Golden Road / Tall Firs / Religious Knives, Knitting Factory, 1/8/08
Liars / No Age, Warsaw, 2/9/08
Black Lips / Quintron & Miss Pussycat, Bowery Ballroom, 3/10/08
Boredoms, Terminal 5, 3/30/08

I also saw the New Pornos about a month ago and was most pleased with the show (forgot to list it), the thing is that I cannot totally enjoy them without Neko (I think she does "save", or rather, improve some of the material) - and she doesn't seem willing to come over here. They were correct and played kool songs ("Bleeding Heart", "Use it", "Alcoholism"), but no "Letter from an Occupant"... they were fun, but didn't leave a lasting impression on me...

Although, running into Neko at a record store before the show slightly biases my opinion, in retrospect. A friend and I drove about 5 hours (from Jacksonville, FL to Atlanta) to see both the New Pornos and M.I.A. back-to-back, so as a whole, it was quite an experience...

Biggest disappointment of 2007 concert-wise was Andrew Bird.

The guy performs all the instruments for a song that is required before he starts and then those instruments are put in some sort of loop (since he can't possibly play all at once). It made for a show without any flow. Song ended, another five minutes of pre-recording sounds.

Wow, sounds like one of those ideas that sound great on paper. Did he interact with the crowd at all while he was setting everything up, or did he just keep his head down like a plumber fixing the toilet?

It's an easy way to avoid extra band members, I guess.

He interacted with the crowd during some songs, not during others. It's impressive that he's able to set up a song this way, but after the initial element of surprise it gets tiresome.

Sometimes he took a little time to get going, but I thought Andrew Bird put on a great show. His one-man show technique makes it as much circus act as rock concert, but its interesting to watch and the music sounds great. Plus the whistling has to be heard live in order to be truly appreciated.

I had to tell this guy to shut the fuck up at a Thurston Moore show last week. This loud, drunk, obnoxious bastard was yelling at people for not dancing. I didn't mind it between songs, but when you start doing it in the middle of songs and annoying everyone around you, you really do need to shut up.

Justin

It was at a really small venue in Charlotte, and I guess people were just walking the street and decided to pay twenty bucks to go in and drink like Yo La Tengo was some mic night band. She just started talking to her friends very loudly as neither of them were actually watching the show. It didn't get too bad until the third song of the encore but she did leave right after I said it.

During The National there was this British woman who kept bumping into people while "dancing".
My friend asked her to knock it off as she was bumping into his girlfriend, to which she replied she was still allowed to "mooooove" as this was a concert.

I've been pretty lucky in general.

I did tell people to shut up during The Assassination of Jesse James, which caused them to walk out. That was nice.

Interesting you say that. I had a similar Yo La Tengo experience in Baltimore. Pretty much the entire outer ring of the show was talking. That wouldn't be a big deal during loud songs, but made it very difficult to hear the quiet songs. Even Ira said some things in between songs. I turned around and yelled "shut the F up" to the entire crowd. They did, for awhile, then they started back up again.

I've told people to shut up in movies too. Talking in concerts and movies is flat out rude.

I fucking hate it when people pull this shit. Same thing happened to me the first time I saw Animal Collective. He was drunk and just pushing into people and yelling at everyone for "not getting into it". Five minutes later, and this is all true, he pulls out his d and just starts peeing in the middle of the crowd. Which then started a fight with the guy whose shoes he pissed all over. He ran off right after.

At an Animal Collective concert, of all places.

Has anybody heard of these guys? Take some big band jazz, sprinkle on a generous portion of latin rhumba, cha-cha, cumbia, bassanova, tango, season with a touch of flamenco, and you're getting there. Top with a bit of kitcsh while you're at it too.

Boy, these guys can play the shit out of their instruments. And that goes for the singer too. She has the pipes and she sure knows how to use them. I've seen Of Montreal and it is a must-see show, even if you don't like the music. Kevin Barnes has a Bowie-like persona thing, and they have props-a-plenty.

yeah, good call...I saw Of Montreal about a year ago and he came out wearing a wedding dress and proposed to the audience. It was quite ridiculous...and of course there is the infamous nude performance.

Ha, Of Montreal sounds entertaining.

The reason I'm hesitant is because I'm not sure how long their set is. They're part of a group that is performing that night.
I don't care much about those either: I'm From Barcelona & Two Gallants.

But I'll keep it in mind. Depends on how much money I have left in may.

Usually the structure is 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour + encore for that type of show, depending on the venue and ticket prices you could get more or less for your money.

Yeah, I've been to a similar gig in this venue.
It's just that I don't know if Of Montreal is the headliner or not. I suspect it's I'm From Barcelona, as they're bigger here.

I've tried e-mailing the place, but they had no idea either.

I've seen em 5 times, and 4 of those times they were awesome.

One time they played for over 3 hours - it was incredible.

Dean and Gene are awesome musicians and performers.

Yeah, I'm super excited to go to that concert, I've seen them twice now, the first time sucked cause it was at a festival in foresty God-knows-where town in Utah and the tech people took forever trying to figure out the wiring, finally Ween got on thinking they were going to do a hour and a half set, after 30 minutes the staff of the event told them their time was up so they got angry and started smashing things. I got away with a drumstick and my other friend got away with a mic stand. It sucked not because of Ween but the event organizers. It was still cool though to see Ween brake anything they could see.

The second time was pure bliss.

I saw Mark Kozelek last night, he was awesome.

Although I was a bit disappointed, he didn't play any Red House Painters' songs.

It was the first time I've seen him that he didn't play Michael. I wanted to hear that song so bad.

Oh well.

David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) opened, and he was awesome. It's so nice to hear religious themed lyrics without irony and without being overtly "Christian," or possessing all the negative qualities of "Christian" rock. I really admire this guy. I am looking forward to his new solo album.

I saw them tonight along with Grizzly Bear. They put on a pretty good show, not great. I was really far from the stage though, so I may have missed out on some of the energy. Grizzly Bear was much more subdued. I felt like at a venue half as big they could have been great.

I saw Kids in the Hall perform their pilot script for free...it was pretty cool seeing them do some of their famous skits like the head crusher, cabbage head, and Buddy Cole. Also got to see a screening of an insane short film that starred Dave Foley and Scott Thompson that had multiple shots of an eyeball being injected with a needle. It was more gruesome, intense, and hilarious than Buñuel and Dali's razor blade/cow eye scene. The venue was incredibly small, with a capacity of less than 150 people so it was great to get to see them so close up, in fact I sat next to Mark McKinney during the screening and saw Scott Thompson in the restroom before the show haha.

Absolutely. When I was in my teens and early twenties, I went to more shows than I can count. Nowadays I rarely go to shows. It has to be a really special act coming through to motivate me to fork over the money and drive an hour to where they're playing. It just doesn't seem worth it to me anymore.

Totally.

I don't go to shows anymore unless there is assigned seating or enough GA seating that I don't have to stand in line for 4 hours to be comfortable. Standing in a crowded room with a bunch of hipsters for 6 hours just ain't fun anymore.

And the crowds in Seattle are some of the worst I've ever experienced.

I saw them when Urlich Schnauss opened for them a few years back. They were really getting into their music (the bassist in particular was totally rocking out) but not a whole lotta crowd interaction.

How was he?

I have these lined up:

Blitzen Trapper
Clint Mansell
Leonard Cohen
The Walkmen
My Morning Jacket
Wolf ParadeI really hope Cohen is any good. I paid enough for him to be good. He owes me.

Very good. His stage presence was different to what I expected; he has a cocky, extroverted rockstar swagger that belies his introspective music. Frankly, his stage persona rubbed me in the wrong way, but his voice and playing were great. A good time was had.

Clint Mansell live was very solid.
Humble guy, very nervous too. Kept saying "y'know" when talking in between songs. Rambled a lot, but it was interesting.

The music was fantastisc as well live, especially the stuff from The Fountain.

I am 19, but actually I forgot that I have been to 2 concerts (sorta).

1. Don't really count this one. Some indie band, of which the drummer was a friend of mine, commissioned me to film the entire deal complete with background interviews and whatnot. Didn't really listen to the music.

2. Some free concert at my uni that was put on by Stars. I was dragged by my ex and spent all of 15 minutes there before I left with a friend with wine who had gone out of boredom.

So yeah. Wire was in Toronto a couple of months ago and I wasn't aware of this. Still kicking myself today.

It was kinda the same, so I guess my positive reaction in July can be attributed to being too far away from the stage & coming directly after Team Hemisphere or whatever that band was.

Anyway, everything I saw at All Tomorrow's Parties on Saturday:

The Stabs -
Beaches - :|
A portion of Le Samourai that was playing in the film tent as I ate lunch - (as always)
Afrirampo (again) - :pritch:
Michael Gira -:eek::eek: (highlight of the day)
Harmonia - :)
Spiritualised - :| (mainly cos of technical issues)
James 'Blood' Ulmer - :eek::eek::eek: (2nd highlight)
The Saints - :| for the most part, and then :pritch: when they played "No Time" and "I'm Stranded"
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - :)
Silver Apples (or rather the singular, since their was only one of 'em) - :pritch:
The $100 of free booze I got 'cos my sister's friend was working at the bar - :pritch: :pritch: :pritch: , followed by
The massive painful sunburn I got and still have -:evil::evil:

I went to the Reverend Horton Heat concert last night, and it was a sold out show. We thought the show started at 7, [started at 9] so we were the first in line, and had the best seats in the house. Near the front, on a balcony. You could see the mosh pits and stay alive, while also seeing everything on stage.

The first band, Reno Divorce, was instantly forgettable, as I simply watched the Mosh Pit. They were friendly down there, making sure that anyone who fell down would instantly be pulled up. There's always the big bastard that controls the area, a drunk guy that's just asking for a fight at some point, and the one girl that thinks she can do it too. They were there.

Then Slim Cessna's Auto Club, a Denver native band, came up and got the show started. Upright bass should be involved in more shows I say. They played a mix of everything, going from rockabilly, to country, to punk, to gospel. They call it "Gothic Country" and that works. Bizarre to watch for my friend, I loved it, as they praised the lord, interacted with the crowd, and one even pretended to have seizures as he played the guitar on a long stint of instrumentals. Fun!

Then Reverend Horton Heat, also with an upright bass (and an even better player) came on for two hours and brought the Gothic THeater down. The mosh pit was huge, and involved everyone there (the guy asking for a fight got his wish, five punches to the face, and brought down to the ground by his long hair). They never really took breaks in between songs, usually finishing off with a strong solo, and going right into their next song. The highlight of the show would be when Reverend Horton Heat stood up on the upright bass and played some intense riffs that got screams from just about everyone. The floor I was on was vibrating.

[FIRST CONCERT REVIEW, PRETTY TOUGH!]

I can't believe it, but my hometown of Knoxville, TN is putting on an avant-garde and experimental music festival. I plan on seeing all the ones in bold. Any other recommendations?

Philip Glass
Dan Deacon
Antony and the Johnsons
Fennesz (solo)
Fennesz with Sparklehorse
Fennesz with David Daniell and Tony Buck
Neil Hamburger (comedy)
Burning Star Core
San Agustin
Luminescent Orchestrii with Sxip Shirey
Tim Harbison
Nicholas Collins
Larkin Grimm
Shaking Ray Levis
Ned Rothenberg
Jon Hassell with Maarifa Street
The Necks
Michael Gira
Negativland
Matmos
(possibly) Pauline Oliveros
Wendy Sutter

And I guess this Jon Hassel guy is a pretty big deal:

It's difficult to think what contemporary music would sound like without his influence. ...there's no doubt that Jon Hassell has had an effect on contemporary music as important as Miles Davis or Jimi Hendrix or James Brown or the Velvet Underground. Sayeth THE WIRE. Am I terrible for not knowing who he is?

Due to a bit of dumb scheduling, I wasn't able to see the Necks or Neil Hamburger, but Michael Gira said that the Necks' show was the best he's seen in years. Also, some people talked as if it was the highlight of the festival.

Still, it was a great great great weekend, and it was awesome to have these artists in my hometown. Makes me a little bit cocky.

Sxip Shirey started off the festival and was super fun.
Matmos were a lot better live than on record. Half the fun is seeing how they make their music (one of them played a balloon by licking his hands and rubbing the top, then asked a dude to pop it into the mic with his lit cigarette).
Fennesz, an artist who makes unspeakably gorgeous music, basically did a near-ambient show. It was cool, sometimes even beautiful, but overall disappointing.
I went a little late to Burning Star Core, but I wish I'd been there the whole time.
Philip Glass and Wendy Sutter (cellist) were great. I loved his solo piano pieces (he played eight or so), liked his pieces for solo cello, and loved the duets. Pretty great stuff overall, even though a lot of people I talked to thought it was boring.
Antony & the Johnsons were, without a doubt, the highlight of the festival for me. Probably one of my favorite concerts ever. I was amazed to find that Antony's sense of humor is intact (he cracked jokes about lots of stuff including his sexuality). Loved when he looked out at the crowd in between two songs and just stared (people laughed, but I'm pretty sure he didn't intend it to be funny).
Dan Deacon + Round Robin was awesomely fun. Highlight: watching C. Spencer Yeh of Burning Star Core get pulled into a dance competition, and then later personally competing with him to dance with some hott chick. (I had the opportunity to interview him, in which he said "We will win the blood of the ages." Cool.)
Negativland did their "radio show" "It's All In Your Head FM," which I'm still kind of puzzled by. Fun though.
Larkin Grimm was shit.
Michael Gira was amazing. A definite highlight. So expressive and intense, and I drank some of his whiskey. Got to interview him also. Much more easy-going and amiable than one would expect.
Fennesz & Sparklehorse was pretty good at points, but beyond the beautiful opener it wasn't much more than indie rock with weird sound effects.

Best thing to ever happen to Knoxville, probably.

Went to a sit-down show last Friday. Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra were playing big-band versions of classic Thelonious Monk tunes. I think it's safe to say that my mind was blown to smithereens.

A couple a few rows back even went out of their way to comment that I was really getting into it, which I was. Good jazz sorta gets in me, and I can't help but snap my fingers to a nice swingin' groove and holler after a particularly good solo. In fact, I find it odd that so many people were just sitting there, listening, doing nothing except to clap at the end. Too many cold fishes in the audience, methinks.

Anywho, I heard that Marsalis was the best jazz trumpeter alive, but I had no idea just how good he is until I heard him on his solos, improvising, pulling these impossibly fast, razor sharp licks on that beautiful trumpet of his. That man is frickin' nuts - crazy, ludicrously good.

Willie Nelson is awesome.

The album that got me into him is Teatro, produced by Daniel Lanois. Check it out if you've never heard it, it just might win you over. Funny, Lanois is responsible for my admiration of Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson. That's pretty awesome. Teatro is incredibly moody and dark, and contains some very creative instrumentation and arrangements.

I might go to this (http://siren.villagevoice.com/siren/)though. It's free! Sure it's no Lollapalooza or All Tomorrow's Parties but at least I won't be spending $200 on a ticket (plus transport).

i was thinking of going to that, but i'm not sure i wanna deal with huge crowds, shitty sound, and going all the way to coney island just for built to spill and future of the left

edit: didn't mean to try to belittle the fest, since it's an admirable thing to put on a festival like this for free, and put together a list of bands of this caliber (which i'm sure have a ton of fans in the city). free concert season in nyc is probably my favorite time of year

Going to a friends show tonight, and got tickets for Clutch in August in Cleveland. Super pumped for that show.

Not too much on my radar right now, seeing the Avett Brothers on August 8th for their CD release show. Then possibly seeing Mos Def, Fiery Furnaces, and White Rabbits since they will in town.

Might see The Warlocks and The Flaming Lips in August. Will definitely see The Psychedelic Furs/Happy Mondays in September. Might attend Musicfest NW to see Beach House, The Twilight Sad and Mount Eerie in September. And I'm definitely seeing/experiencing the Jesus Lizard in October. Sometimes I wish I was born about fifteen years earlier so I could see my favorite bands at their prime.

Oh man, I am bummed out. Trent Reznor is calling his current tour the farewell one, and has said he'll never tour again. Every single LA show is sold out.

Yes, it's very likely this will not be his last tour, artists do it all the time, but I'm still bummed out. One of the very few modern rock acts I love.

I'm gonna go home and listen to The Fragile.

I saw the Flips and Jesus Lizard (not together) about 15 years ago.

:)

I think the Flips live shows now are a total blast, although I do miss the times when they were more of a rock band. There is nothing like seeing Steven Drozd on the drums - nothing. That's probably the main thing I miss now. While it's cool to see him playing keyboards and guitar and singing, he absolutely rocks at the kit. Also, seeing Ronald play the guitar was a humbling experience - that dude was amazing.

I wish I could have seen the Flips when Jonathan Donahue (Dingus) was playing with them. I would have loved to see them for A Priest Driven Ambulance, or Hit to Death in the Future Head - that would have been sweet.

I also got to see a couple of their car-stereo and boom box shows. Pretty neat.

Anyhow, we're going to see them in a few weeks. It's an outdoor show, and I don't normally like outdoor shows because of the sound quality, but it should be cool.

I'm going to see them at an outdoor show too, here in Portland, Oregon. Can't wait. I've never seen them in concert before. Do they not play a lot of their older more rock band stuff? Cause even though I love their Soft Bulletin/Yoshimi, I also dig their earlier Transmissions from/Clouds Taste Metallic.

Unfortunately, not really. At least the last couple of times I've seen them they've only played their newer stuff, with a song or two from Transmissions, maybe. I'd love to hear them play some stuff off of In a Priest Driven Ambulance or Hit to Death, again. They put on one hell of an awesome show though. It's like a two-hour party full of good times with everyone dancing, laughing and singing along.

Have you seen the concert film UFOs at the Zoo?

That's a drag. I saw NIN back at Lallapalooza - the first one, actually - and they were a riot. Pretty Hate Machine was the first real CD that blew me away with its fidelity, so I was all over this band.

Their big club hit at the time was their cover of Queen's Get Down Make Love. So everybody was waiting for them to play it. Reznor I think knew this, so he teased the crowd by introducing every song in their set with "this next song's about fuckin'". Every. Song.

Oh, and they never did play Get Down Make Love.

I haven't actually, but I have seen the documentary on the Flaming Lips, The Fearless Freaks. Got a bit of a taste of their concerts over the years. I hope that big hamster ball gets brought out when I go see them.

Went to Osheaga today. Got there a bit late but managed to see Vampire Weekend, Rufus Wainwright, Arctic Monkeys, The Decembrists, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Vampire Weekend is solid live but still a little wet behind the ears, love their songs though. The Decembrists I found hit and miss and they were here too, played a lot from their new album which didn't capture my interest. Rufus was OK, not really my cup of tea either, the girlfriend is a big fan. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs put on an excellent show. Not a huge fan but I like a number of their songs. The Arctic Monkeys put on a good show as well, again I like their singles more than their music in general.

Missed out on K'naan, The Roots, Coldplay and some others the day before because I had to work.

Good times.

I saw her a few years ago and, yeah, she was great, but the place was packed. I had to strain myself to see her over the wad of people in front of me, and I'm over six feet tall. I believe the last several times she's been through town, she's played the same place. When she gets a bigger venue, that's what I'll see her again.

I saw her at the Kimmel Center in Philly, which is a real swanky venue where the Philadelphia Orchestra plays and things of that nature. So the crowd was seated the entire time. I had a good sight line. She's kinda hot.

A couple great concerts coming my way this fall, first Grizzly Bear in late September (w/ Beach House) and then Wilco in mid-October. I don't remember Ann Arbor ever getting these good of concerts. Luckily my school's fall break occurs the weekend of the latter, and I'll probably be grabbing a train home for the former. Also considering seeing St. Vincent in late October in Ithaca.
