The movie is so many months away, you could have a child in that time, and maybe even go crazy enough with the wait to name it Batman, regardless of the baby's gender.

I'm just saying... it's gonna be a long time. I can't wait though.

Having a baby to solve a problem is always a good idea, whether it's to pass the time in anticipation of a caped crusader film, or to save a marriage.

Add Heath Ledger himself to the list of people finding this interpretation of the Joker to be nearly too much...

Actor Heath Ledger told the New York Times that the Joker is keeping him up at night. "Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger said. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going." One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing. The actor also showed the Times reporter his "Joker diary" filled with "images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny (AIDS is one of them)."

Full article here. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/movies/moviesspecial/04lyal.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&ref=arts)

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21560

Yes, some scamp leaked our Joker cover image yesterday*. But, though they may take our pictures, they will never take our, erm, words. The cover is just the beginning.

In an exclusive interview Empire sat down on the set of The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger, aka The Joker, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, to talk about bringing the greatest villain in comic book (and now cinema) history to the screen again.

"I definitely feared it," says Ledger of taking a role that every fanboy around the world demands to see done right. "Although anything that makes me afraid I guess excites me at the same time. I don’t know if I was fearless, but I certainly had to put on
a brave face and believe that I have something up my sleeve. Something different...”

This is not your Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero Joker. The new incarnation of the character is cruel and psycho to the core. And getting into that mindset meant Ledger marinading himself in nothing but Joker before shooting.

"It’s a combination of reading all the comic books I could that were relevant to the script and then just closing my eyes and meditating on it," he says. "I sat around in a hotel room in London for about a month, locked myself away, formed a little diary and experimented with voices — it was important to try to find a somewhat iconic voice and laugh. I ended up landing more in the realm of a psychopath — someone with very little to no conscience towards his acts. He’s just an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown, and Chris has given me free rein. Which is fun, because there are no real boundaries to what The Joker would say or do. Nothing intimidates him, and everything is a big joke"

And once again there are a bunch of new viral websites:

What?

I very, VERY distinctly remember several interviews before he started making the film, talking about how ridiculous comic books are, how he cannot take comics or their readers seriously, and pretty much how he's doing it for the money.

I even posted the articles on the old forum and was pretty pissed about it.

But when it was first announced he got the role, he DID bash comics and the people who read them.

I am not imagining this.

I think you are misremembering. I've read many interviews saying that he hates comic book MOVIES, and that based on what he's seen in Spiderman, X-Men, etc, he didn't want to be involved with them (until he saw Batman Begins and was convinced that it could be a fun role to take on), but he never said he hates comic books or their fans.

And who cares if he did anyway. Tom Jane was the same before he did The Punisher. Now he writes his own comics.

Either way, is it that hard to create a flexible rubber costume that looks good instead of an armour? I guess they think it heightens the realism, from Batman '89 to these parts, but my Batman wears a rubber costume.

I think they just think backwards from what I was thinking, that Batman gradually removes his armor as he gains more experience. However, they seem to be going with, "It's getting more dangerous out there, so he needs more protection."

I'm not even sure which one's more realistic.

Yes, when they said Batman was getting a new suit I thought it was going to be something closer to the regular cloth which I just mentioned.

Like you said, I thought that as he got more confident with his skills, he took off the armor because bullets and knives weren't much of a threat to him anymore.

Bullets and knives have never been much of a worry to Batman - at least in the comic books.

He's too skilled and smart and tactful to ever get into a situation where the bad guy even has a chance to shoot at him.

That's kind of the whole purpose of the "fear as a weapon" thing. Scare the shit out of them and they can't think straight.

The thing that intrigues me the most about Gotham Knight is the animation style. They're gonna try to make it different from other animated incarnations, and lately there have been a lot of them. I hope it looks kick-ass. With Bruce Timm directing the episodes it can't be too bad.

Is he as terrifying as people say?

I wasn't terrified, because we only see him for like 10 seconds. However, he looked psychotic, acted psychotic....seeing him in motion is honestly completely different. He is the Joker.

There's a bunch of shots of scenes after the prologue, one is where he is walking up a street shooting a machine gun manically while smiling. :pritch::pritch::pritch::pritc h: Amazing.

The bank robbery is what I would call completely drained of energy, almost standard. But there's an undercurrent of weirdness that culminates with the Joker's revealing. The prologue is a lot like the old teasers that happened before the first commercial in the animated series.

Nah. They couldn't make them required viewings because most people simply won't see them. It's aimed at the geeks. I think it even says something about it on the article.

The real catch is gonna be to see the Nolanworld version of villains that aren't likely to make it into the actual movies. Mr. Freeze? Hugo Strange? Scarface and Ventriloquist? Who the hell knows.

Yes I know it was in the teaser...but it just seems from the shots that have been leaked from the film, it's pretty much got the same colour scheme as the first movie.

I'm totally open for a new colour scheme - even though I loved the amber and black. I just hope it doesn't go neon.

Most of those shots were probably done by a set photographer. The final film could look different depending on lenses or post-production color correction (used obviously in Oh Brother and less obviously in Hard Candy).

For the marketing, maybe, because that's what you gotta do, but from what I know of the story, Joker's really only part of a bigger problem that Batman has to face. You can hear it in the opening narration of the trailer, it's about the escalation and how Batman is responsible for all these freaks coming out the woodworks.

EDIT: With that said, I have zero doubt that Ledger will steal the show completely.

Egh. I reposted it here (http://www.justpressplay.net/movies/the-dark-knight/news/two-new-joker-posters.html).

I think it's the worst of the three, but it's still pretty cool.

Yep, I agree.

I hope there'll be some more Batman themed ones. :P

You know, the dialogue for the Joker that I've heard so far, on the basis of the trailer and this clip, isn't very clever. I hope the writing for his character is better than this is leading me to believe.

I really liked the line from the trailer, referencing the escalation that the city has faced since Batman came out.

"You've changed things...forever. There's no goin' back. You see to them, you're just a freak...like me!"

I didn't say it was clever or funny, I just said I liked it.

Besides, Joker isn't very funny anyways. He's only really funny to himself.

Such a great trailer. Just well-made, and that action theme from the Begins score really kills. Lovin the look of the Joker and love what I see of Ledger's approach. The shot of Joker laughing suicidally/homicidally right before the truck blows up is quintessential. A right-on moment.

The shot of Bats charging toward Joker while Joker fires gun at him ("Come on! Hit me!") is pretty much an obvious nod/homage/xerox of the same scene at the end of Batman when Keaton is flying toward Nicholson on the street.

My question: is anything like this scene in any of the graphic novels? Or does it come purely from Burton's version? If the latter, then I wonder why Nolan chose to repeat something from the Burton version so directly?

I guess I'm late in the game, but I'm really starting to realize Heath Ledger actually quite talented, and not just another Hollywood pretty-boy.

I was first impressed by him with Monster's Ball. However I thought maybe it was just a fluke, especially since his role isn't too large.

Then more recently, I was very impressed with his performance in The Brothers Grimm.

The movie is absolutely atrocious and easily one of the worst movies I've seen this year, but he does some great voicework and eccentricities, and was easily the best part of the movie.

He has a bit of a Johnny Depp-like chameleon feeling to him. I'm really, really looking forward to his Joker.

And yes, that trailer is fan-fucking-tastic.

BATMAN:
You're insane

JOKER
Insane? Who's to say who's insane in a sane world gone insane?

BATMAN
I am. Me, Batman

JOKER
You? Why, you're as insane as anyone. You and me, we're like two insane sides of the same insane coin.

Can I see a 1080p trailer on my TFT monitor? A chunk cannot be displayed it seems. My TV can do 1366 X 768 so that's not 1080p either. But perhaps I can set the TV at 1080i?

Or maybe I'm just dumb.
