This is a great interview with Christian Bale (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20184780,00.html).

I don't get why everyone's acting so surprised about there being a third movie.

The lead actors signed for three movies, and the story has been meant as a 3-movie arc from the beginning.

Not sure about that.

I just know Bale, Oldman and Freeman signed 3-movie deals.

Also, Goyer and Nolan collaborated on a 3-movie story arc, involving the rise (and potential fall) of Batman, as well as a story involving the Joker and Two-Face for movies 2 and 3.

So while the Joker could survive this film, executives will probably have to decide if he'll just disappear from Film 3 or else recast him, which after however Ledger's performance is received, could be difficult.

I'm sure some clever writers could come up with a way to have him disappear.

Or maybe they could do like what they did with Marlon Brando in Superman Returns, and use CGI coupled with unused footage to have Ledger's presence in the second film.

Anyways, Nolan and his team have more than proven themselves numerous times, so I'm sure that we'll get something good.

Depending on the final cut for Dark Knight they might not have that much of a problem. If Joker occupies a similar role to that of Scarecrow in that his arch is not very deep and reaches a satisfying conclusion, his inclusion in the ubiquitous 3rd film may be unnecessary. It may disappoint some Batman fans to have the Joker so quickly excised from the overall story but I think that Two Face is a much more compelling villain and that his story suits the larger arch far more than the Joker's. The difficulty now is pairing down his impact so that it doesn't feel unnatural when it doesn't resonate in the future Batman story. At the same time, cutting too much will leave his presence feeling overly fragmented. Let's just pray. . .

It's never as cut and dry as that. These days when you go into a blockbuster movie (especially a comic book one) you are required to sign multiple contracts because they're already hoping for a franchise. It doesn't mean it'll happen. Affleck signed for 3 Daredevils too. Bale signed for a Batman vs Superman movie. That's not happening anytime soon (if ever).

And the planned 3-story arc was Goyer's original pitch, but that's long gone. The movie's changed considerably, and they absorbed the storyline for the third movie into this one. We don't know yet if they won't resolve the Two-Face story in this movie or leave it open. I'm guessing they resolve it.

Nolan has said that he doesn't know if he wants to do a third Batman. He doesn't like thinking about sequels, and he's already got The Prisoner, The Exec, and other projects lined up after Dark Knight. Who knows if 3 years from now he still feels like he has a story to tell?

WB will throw a gazillion dollars at him and it'll probably happen, but that's why they keep asking about the third movie. Until pre-production is greenlit, nothing's for sure.

Grouchy
03-21-2008, 06:38 PM
I dunno if I'm alone here, but I'd prefer they went with another actor instead of doing a CGI Joker or cutting him out of a script that needs the character's presence.

Like, come on. I haven't even seen Ledger's performance yet, but it's the only reasonable alternative.

Yeah, I really hope they don't recast, I don't like that much. Here's hoping they just wrap his storyline and start on something else or don't make a third one at all. Third film of a trilogy is often the weakest anyway, everyone runs out of steam.

OK, well maybe I don't mean trilogy so much as series (I realize the creative forces changed up for many of these but that's still an example of the problem with third installments)... examples:

Batman
Alien
Terminator
Godfather
Lord of the Rings (debatable but I'll stand firm)
Star Wars
Back to the Future
Naked Gun
Matrix
Evil Dead (again debatable but *shrug*)
Spiderman
Rocky
Rambo
X-men
Robocop
Scream
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Pirates of the Caribbean

I'll leave out the pure arthouse trilogies cause I think it's a different ball park.

I can think of tons of series' where the second is the weakest, aside from the ones mentioned above.

The Matrix, Star Wars prequels, Die Hard, Austin Powers, American Pie, Lethal Weapon, the Anthony Hopkins Lecter films...

Though I guess it usually comes down to whether or not it was conceived as a multi-movie series with a plot throughout, or if it's just milking the cash cow.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the Pirates of the Caribbean series because I have only seen the first.

But I admit I got yours and number8's arguments mixed up - when you posted the big list, I thought they were examples of series' where the 2nd film was the strongest, not where the 3rd was the weakest.

But still, I'll give you my thoughts...

Batman - 3 is much better than 4. I actually like Batman Forever.

Alien - Alien 3 is great.

Terminator - agree here.

Godfather - only seen the first

Star Wars - agree.

Matrix - I loved Revolutions

X-men - agree

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - agree

No, at certain viewings of the Schumacher films a rare African spore was released into the air that pleasantly intoxicates its host. Thus, in a move, by the studio suits, to try and stem the overwhelming tide of negative word of mouth, some have associated a pleasant experience with the films. It was sort of a mass Pavlovian experiment. Those of us who didn't get high, well, we just felt nausea.

MadMan
04-01-2008, 05:15 AM
I found BR to be too damn weird, even for me. I really didn't care for the Penguin and there wasn't enough Walken. Plus I don't really think that Michelle Phifer is all that hot, although she made for a decent catwoman. As for Batman it has Jack going all out crazy which is awesome, and I think Keaton was a better Batman than Val Kilmer or George Clooney. I thought everyone agreed that Batman and Robin was the worst film of the series, hands down. Batman Begains is damn good but it takes the easy way out by being an origin story, thus proving that the creators realized how the only way to save the series was to reboot it.

number8
04-01-2008, 05:22 AM
It all came down to DeVito being an awful actor period, Pfeiffer being a laughable Catwoman, Walken being forgettable, and that gothic drab look wearing thin. At least in Batman we got to see some colors during the Joker scenes. Returns' visual aesthetic puts me to sleep. Caligari, it ain't.

UPDATE: Erik here -- new Dark Knight trailer just premiered to a thunderous applause. The trailer will be available "in about two weeks" and from what I gather it will come via the viral marketing campaign (we were told to hunt it down from here). Trailer looks great -- lots of Joker dialogue, lot more of Harvey Dent and a possible prelim glimpse at Dent's transformation into Two Face -- though we do not see Two Face in the trailer. Dent does have one awesome line in the trailer; he says, "You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain." Once again, we were told everyone will see the trailer in about two weeks from now. The Dark Knight arrives in theaters on July 18.

You'll need to be in contact with a partner-in-crime who has online access to relay your instructions once you're there. These instructions will give you the TRAIL to follow, but be sure to look both ways when crossing the street; we wouldn't want you to make an unscheduled visit to the ER now, would we?

Put on a smile and plan to spend about an hour or so bonding with your fellow clowns.

I don't think it sucks - it's better than most movie posters out there.

But like Rowland said, it's certainly much more childish than the others. Obviously catering to the younger moviegoers.

I agree it's the weakest poster we've seen so far.

And I have to mention again that I like Batman's new armor. It almost looks like a high-tech version of the stuff you see on knights in those period piece films...which is appropriate.

But is it really the trailer for the original Batman?

I'm pretty sure it's just been edited to show similar shots grouped together.

There's no way those seconds of complete blackness occurred at the exact same time, for the exact same stretch of time, in both trailers.

Huh, if that's the real deal about the 1989 Batman trailer, then this is fucking incredible.

I mean Dark Side of the Rainbow level of incredible. Because no fucking way are they going to pattern the new trailer after the old one. It doesn't make a lick of sense.

In any case, that was a great watch. Wish I could switch to the Batman '89 audio... The fact that I don't just raises my suspicions that it's not real.

Erm I don't think so, too much similarity to be coincidence... either the original trailer/footage from the original film was edited (likely) or the new filmmakers were giving a nod to the old film.

Either way you cut it that's still a ton of similar footage... I would have hoped for a bit more disparity in shot selection from Nolan but I guess it's because both films are culled from similar source material.

Blackness timing isn't really the point... shot selection alone there's a ton of mimicry... I'm going to assume it's mostly a source material issue.

After a rewatch of the trailer it's not nearly as similar as I first thought (probably because of the faux pacing matchup) so... nevermind everything I just said.

I'm not sure why what you're seeing here would necessarily reflect back on the original film but either way in my experience Nolan's films tend to be more about the Gestalt than the play by play.

CBR did a great interview with Christopher Nolan. It can be read here. (http://comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16888)

This part has me particularly excited...

CBR: Batman is a detective. In the first film, there was a great deal of time spent explaining in very realistic detail how Batman does all these fantastic things that he does. In “The Dark Knight,” now that those things have been done, will we see Batman using his head?

Christopher Nolan: Yes. He definitely, much more easily in this story, assumes more of a detective role. That was something that was important to us to get in [“Batman Begins”]. We got it in a small way, but in dealing with the origin and dealing with all the larger aspects of the character, it became very difficult to get that in. We’re trying to get in stuff we couldn’t get into the first film, and the detective stuff is definitely one of those aspects.

I thought this was an interesting new article by Wired.

Dark Knight Director Shuns Digital Effects for the Real Thing (http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/magazine/16-07/ff_darknight?currentPage=1)

The Bat-plan was simple: Base-jump off one Hong Kong skyscraper, smash through the window of another, grab the Chinese crime boss, then hitch a drag chute to a passing C-130 cargo plane for a daring aerial escape. And on to Gotham! An instant, no-fuss extradition in the best tradition of American vigilantism. Just another working day for Batman and, presumably, just another feat of digital wizardry for the visual effects team. Except for one thing: Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight, wanted to do it for real.

"So we got an Imax shot of Christian Bale as Batman standing on top of the Sears Tower," Pfister says. "Here we are with our principal actor standing on the edge of one of the tallest buildings in the world. I think a lot of people will assume that's CGI." Perhaps, but when you see the shot (featured in the first trailer), your eye instinctively detects something different, something thrilling and rare: photographic reality.

So did the director get everything he needed from Ledger before his death? He says yes: Ledger nailed it in principal photography. Thomas adds, "Everything you see onscreen is his performance." (In other words, there'll be no clunky digital resurrection, aural or visual, no morbid echoes of Oliver Reed's posthumous performance in Gladiator.) Besides, Nolan doesn't believe in bringing an actor back six months later and expecting him to re-create the nuances of a character, any more than he believes a computer can re-create the quality of human camera work on its own.

"Anything that's even vaguely funny you just can't reproduce. When there's a hint of irony or comedy ... Well, I don't make comedies, per se, but" — he chuckles — "at least I think my films are funny. Nobody else seems to think so, though."

Even before tragedy struck, Nolan was spooked by the character Ledger created. "I remember Heath calling up while I was working on the script and talking about ventriloquist's dummies, about having a voice that was high and low, and I'm on the other end going, 'Uh ... yeah.' It sounded insane, and not necessarily in the right way. But when he performed it, I was like, 'OK, I see.'
