Charles Barkley is a bad actor, but I'd still much, much rather watch him semi-fail on SNL than Taylor Lautner or some such shit

Also, MacGruber is owning it tonight

I'd suggest that he takes NBC's breach-of-contract buyout of 80 mil and go do some more creative-type shows, but Conan seems like a very nice dude and wouldn't do that out of sympathy for the Max Weinberg 7 and the writers.

I was actually just reading about Matt Damon and he’s like, ‘There’s a culture of outrage.’ I’m like, ‘Well, they have a reason to be outraged.’ I think it’s a lot of dudes just being scared. They’re like, ‘What if I did something and I didn’t realize it?’ I’m like, ‘Deal with it.’

yeah, this is probably the main reason conan will take the 12:01 slot. he seems like too nice of a guy to leave the people on his show without a job to indulge himself in a pet project, especially after moving to la

not that he doesn't deserve to

Woah. There's an article on Variety saying that in 2004 when Conan's NBC contract was almost up, FOX offered him his own premiere talk show with 3x the money, but NBC wooed Conan to keep staying on Late Night with the promise of giving him The Tonight Show in 5 years.

    Haha.

"The Tonight Show is not the Tonight Show at 12:05," an insider said. "By definition, 12:05 is tomorrow."

I think Jimmy Fallon came out looking the best when he said he doesn't give a shit what timeslot he's on, because it doesn't matter. His fans watch him on DVR and Hulu anyway.

This is very true. I'm not up when his show airs as is, so pushing him back 30 minutes makes no difference to me.

Television timeslots become more and more irrelevant with each passing day.

Which is a good thing for us viewers. Probably not so much for the networks, but hey who gives a shit about them?

I kinda do, because I want them to keep funding great shows. Networks not happy = lowering budget = reality shows.

A fair point. I came across MTV today, and saw 10 minutes of what's called Silent Library. It's a game show, set in a library, where a bunch of douchebags try to earn $300 at a time.

Yeah, it's MTV, but if this is liked, we'll only see more of it. The whole show probably costed less than $1000 to produce.

If you enjoy network-produced television content on even an infrequent basis, you probably shouldn't be so dismissive of the networks themselves. Not that you have to send them Christmas cards or anything. Hopefully, the people publishing the content you enjoy will figure out a way to adapt to the changing landscape.

True, but at the same time the networks have killed many a great show, or a show that had potential to be great. And there are still crappy reality TV shows on the air anyways.

Anyone watched Conan last night? Bitter humor is the best.

"Star in a Lifetime original movie about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship with her network."

"Leave television and work in a classier business with better people... like hardcore porn."

Fucking brilliant. He was showing off his edge again. Pity it took a clusterfuck for him to be this way again.

Conan refuses to do a show after Leno. Full statement:
    People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

    Yours,

    Conan
