It's my understanding that Kubrick hadn't finished the sound mix. It would probably be more accurate to call it the European release version rather than a "director's cut."Quoting Skitch (view post)

Crash?
Cronenberg's CrashQuoting Dukefrukem (view post)
hmm...bought that tape too. I guess I'm rewatching sexy shit this weekend, HFD lolQuoting Idioteque Stalker (view post)
I find Crash more disturbing than sexy but I'll try not to judge your kinks.
Too late, I feel judged.Quoting Grouchy (view post)
I haven't seen this movie since it came out. I also seem to remember being disturbed.

Call Me By Your Name and Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) most likely qualify. Also the 1982 Cat People is awesome. I had an avatar of one of the film's shots for a while during October one year.

Very ‘murica to turn wearing a mask during a pandemic, *for going into an enclosed space for a period of time*, into... this
Midnight Run (1988) - 9
The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) - 8.5
The Adventures of Robinhood (1938) - 8
Sisters (1973) - 6.5
Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5
I'd classify these more as strict romance movies. Sure there's some sex in them, but I'd watch them with pretty much anyone and not blush so in my mind they're disqualified.Quoting MadMan (view post)
A Nos Amours might qualify if memory serves, but it's been too long. I should watch that again--remember loving it.
I'm halfway through 9 1/2 Weeks and yeah, I think this fits your bill. It's not good, its horrifically dated and misogynistic, but...well...it looks like what I've heard about 50 Shades of Grey so maybe it was ahead of it's time?
One more week of this semester from hell, and I'll be able to watch movies again! First up, Da 5 Bloods....

Someone rated The Dreamers, but it hasn't been brought up in the discussion, and it should.
Although I haven't seen it since its release... 2003.
I have absolutely no issue with this. Good on them.Quoting Peng (view post)
It's a mistake to let businesses even have a choice in the matter.
It should be law to wear a mask until the vaccine comes.
And when that happens, it should be legally required to get the vaccine.
As far as sex comedies go, The Telephone Book (1971) is fantastic. Highly recommended.

The mask "controversy" is a failure of leadership and a sign of a vast cultural selfishness in which people refuse to do the bare minimum to help out their fellow human. At work we're required to wear them and there are signs that say "I am protecting you, you are protecting me." It's a simple message that I wish more people would get behind, but of course it has to be turned into some obnoxious partisan issue that boils down to "you're soft if you care about other people and also I am mildly inconvenienced so therefore my inalienable rights are under some sort of ferocious attack."Quoting megladon8 (view post)
I understand why businesses would want to avoid the inevitable confrontations if they were to require them without a legal justification. It's just so frustrating.

This is a bonkers move to put politics in front of health.Quoting TGM (view post)
I don't think it's AMC's fault (Regal is going with a similar policy). They're trying to protect their staff from having to fight with people who wouldn't comply because it's not legally mandated. It's up to governments to decide to do the right thing and make masks required for the public good. The alternative is returning to lockdowns... or lots of people getting sick and dying and the economy continuing to flounder (which is probably what most places will go with, unfortunately).Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)

Well you hit it. It's about life or death. Has nothing to do with red and blue. Freedom of speech. Etc etc. It's saving lives. And why people can't get behind THAT is unfathomable. Unless everyone is just taking cues from the Prez in which case it is 100% fathomable.Quoting Lazlo (view post)
I think a lot of it may be rooted in this, or at least the attitude of "fuck everyone but me" that he's associated with and contributed to its growth. Generally public officials like the president ought to be showing a good example, modeling good behavior, and can be inspirational on these fronts, but he ain't the guy for that.Quoting Dukefrukem (view post)
There's a few other things that I'd tie it to as well:
1. Bad messaging back in March that masks were ineffective. This was done to prevent private citizens from depleting the supply, but that issue could have been handled without putting that seed in people's brains. I guess maybe the science wasn't fully conclusive yet, but what a bad move.
2. Americans have never had a mask culture like Asia. It's like a big "stay away from me I'll get you deathly ill" sign to many. I'll admit to being weirded out seeing people in masks in the past. But really it's a sign of respect for other people on the part of the wearer. But that message is only now getting across and since masks were never a thing here it's hard to convince people, I think.

100%- i always scoffed at them for wearing masks but I totally get it now. Not hard to understand once your country has been totally devastated by a virus, which seems to happen often in China.Quoting Lazlo (view post)
In Argentina it's legally mandated inside any shop, closed space or public building but not on the streets. People wear them with zero complaints except for those who are already lunatics and think it's all a conspiracy, but that's a minority that exists everywhere.
