I hear you KF. I had an aquaintance in Orange County whose mother disappeared and no body was ever found. That's horrible enough.

But her husband (the guy's stepfather) wss arrested for the crime and released for lack of evidence. And the ambiguity destroyed the family. Those who believed he killed her severed all contact with those who thought he was innocent. They never recovered, because they could not be united in who was to blame.

My comment is out of date now. I was interrupted by a work meeting.

Were you waiting for a high-enough-horse to make your reappearance on? LOL.
No. I was trying to empathize with people I don't know at all in real life. You should try it some time.

Curious-- outside this context when you see statements like this from other people, how do they read to you?

It reads as dismissive to me. As if the person making the statement wants to brush off the latest outrage-du-jour because it's completely outside their experience. *shrug*

Which might feel like it's justified here and there because with social media working as a collective "2 minutes hate" for every player, it gets increasingly difficult to put yourself in anybody else's shoes.
My wording was flippant, Irish, because I'm on a message board with people I have known now for 10+ years. I feel as comfortable as if I were sitting in a room having drinks and casual conversation. I would hope the people on this board know me well enough to know that I don't dismiss anyone's feelings out of turn.

We're talking about a multinational corporation with a $12 billion dollar market cap and nearly 2,000 locations around the world. If you've ever worked for a large company, you know that any public statement goes through a dozen copywriters and gets the approval of a half dozen marketing VPs before it goes out. Social media accounts are the public face of the brand. People at large corporations take that shit very seriously. I can guarantee this wasn't some intern on his phone while killing time in the mail room.
I don't think that's the case. With Twitter, we have seen these mistakes on a near daily basis, with huge corporations having to apologize for off-the-cuff remarks. Heck, we've seen corporations and organizations accidentally post pornography. I don't know how you're in a position to guarantee that it wasn't a younger employee (I never used the word intern, and I don't mean someone working in one of their retail stores) who posted an off-the-cuff remark to the Twitter feed. I'm inclined to believe that, based on previous evidence, corporations have a casual relationship with Twitter and allow younger employees to have access to them.

If I was a member of Hae's family, this podcast would have me completely livid. This is a greater tragedy than it is a mystery.
Not sure if you know this, but Hae's brother has praised Koenig's reporting but chided Serial fans for treating his sister's murder like an episode of LOST and made a plea to them on Reddit to remember that a real person died and his family went through hell. He said his mother doesn't know about the podcast yet and he's doing everything he can to keep her from finding out. He said he listens to it alone in his room with headphones on and struggles with it.

I have a really big problem with Serial listening parties and bar meetups. It creeps me the fuck out.

Jesus. I don't mean to set you back on your heels, KF, but even in the context of casual conversation your choice of language strikes me as odd.

So, casually, let me turn my head toward you and say, "Dude, that's fucked up" and then maybe we can move on.

I don't know how you're in a position to guarantee that it wasn't a younger employee.
Because I've spent most of my adult life working inside and just outside very large corporations. Very large corporations don't give anyone the level of autonomy that you suggest here. They might like to suggest otherwise (especially when they fuck up publicly), but from the inside I can tell you that's pure bullshit.

What is far more likely in this example and the others you cited (outside, ya know, the porn thing) is that Brand A sees Brand B connecting to people and getting "engagement" on social media. And they want in on that action because buzzwords like "social media" and "brand engagement" are all the rage these days.

Certain companies do this very well. Arby's and Charmin come to mind. Other companies don't, but they try to be "cool" anyway and then make a joke that doesn't land.

I wasn't ready to reach for a pitchfork and burn down a Best Buy over that tweet, but I did wince when I read it. (Hell, simply from a pure marketing standpoint, the tone is all wrong. Forget empathy-- I'm surprised nobody at Best Buy said, hey, do we really want to make tongue in cheek jokes about murder?).

The only other option I can think of is that a Best Buy outsourced its PR/marketing/brand management to a third party company. But then I can't think of an ad agency that would be suicidal to let any "young person" tweet from a client account without oversight.

Speaking of podcasts, big thanks to Davis and ledfloyd for pointing out Radiolab. I've been binging on their podcasts while working for the last week. Really strong stuff. Favorites thus far are "Haunted," "Patient Zero," and "Juicervose."

I don't think we've ever been formally introduced.

Right on. The episode on color is one of the most fascinating things I've ever listened to. My favorite thing about Radiolab is how well it's produced. The audio production is some of the best I've ever heard.

If you like Radiolab, I highly recommend 99% Invisible. The extended report on Sports Broadcasting should have, IMO, won a Pulitzer. One of the best things I've ever heard in my life.

Listening to "The Sound of Sports" right now. Thanks for the rec. Also grabbed Hardcore History.

Yeah, that's the one. So good. I really had no idea how much sound work is added to live sports broadcasts.

I'm hoping that 99% uses some of my music next year. There's a chance that they might.

The juror at the very begining of episode 8 has the most Baltimore accent of all time.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

You listened to four episodes of it thinking it was fictional? How the hell is that possible?
