In Seville, beautiful, free-spirited Carmen encounters the controlling soldier Don José, as in the opera. But the film will focus on two teenagers who learn that Carmen is fated to be killed by a man who tries to make her fall in love with him. It is described as a “socially committed, feminist� retelling of the classic tale, aimed at eight-year-olds and up.

Prends garde Ã* toi! is set up at Folivari (Pachamama, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales), the prominent French studio led by Didier and Damien Brunner. Pierre-Henri Leon is co-producing at France’s La Garde Montante. Enticingly, renowned French comics artist Cyril Pedrosa (Portugal) is onboard as art director.

Eras interweave and reality shades into dream in Nayola, a drama that traces the legacy of the decades-long civil war in Angola. Based on the play Black Box by Jose Eduardo Agualusa and Mia Couto, two prominent writers from Portuguese-speaking Africa, the film follows the fortunes of three generations of women from a single family, including the title character.

The Criterion Collection has curated a series of arthouse animated features from over the decades that'll be on the Criterion Channel for at least the month of July.

I've been dying to watch Mind Game and Paprika for so long! There's a LOT more on that list I'm eager to see, too!

I've seen Paprika three times now - a great film but I still don't understand the title character. How does she be? Seems like she's a super-hero type character totally separate from the main story.

She's a handful, isn't she?

On a very surface level, she is a literal superhero since she acts on pure dream logic. And on a deeper one, she is a manic pixie dream girl which is cool in a meta sort of way and probably a bit of a trope deconstruction since by all accounts, she is a way for Dr. Chiba to let loose from her real world serious everyday persona(and the disconfort she must feel about it) and her repressed feelings towards Tokita.
