It's been too long since I've seen Always, Hook, Jurassic Park, Amistad, or Saving Private Ryan to give them a rating, although the last one seriously sucked. Basically, I like Spielberg's films in inverse proportion to their Tom Hanksness. Don't get me wrong: I like Hanks, and I like Spielberg, but put 'em together and you get The Terminal.

Well, I'm partial to Minority Report myself, but maybe you're not as fond of exciting and suspenseful movies as I am. As for The Terminal, it's just so mediocre and bland. I just hated Hanks as this cuddly, insipid sub-Balki character. Oh, and those scenes where he and Catherine Zeta-Jones talk about Napoleon and Josephine, which are just painful to watch! I don't even want to remember it, and in fact I've largely suppressed the memory.

    I will fight you.

    I will grant you things:

Zeta was a terribly conceived character and the Star Trek romance was gag-worthy. But I feel the film succeeds as a film that captures a peculiar political moment as well as a Tom Hanks comedy, of which there are simply too few. The man has great timing. I also love the awkward sincerity (you were right, Spinal!) of his accent, which achieves a lovely rhythm while maintaining its singular locationlessness.

Minority Report I feel is riddled with too much technical distraction and inexplicable logic to be all that exciting to me.

Okay, there are some (minor) plot holes in Minority Report, but that doesn't matter to me, because the movie is basically a series of elaborate set pieces, and at no point is Spielberg not in complete control over the tone of the film. How about that whole sequence with Peter Stormare as the sleazy eye doctor, which is really suspenseful and funny and disgusting? Spielberg in this film does a great job of playing his audience.

I don't understand that scene. Why does the doctor help him anyway? Why does he give him food? Why does he not get rid of the moldy food in there? I was more confused than in suspense. I suppose Stormare's performance was amusing, though. Quacking and stuff.

There is much to admire in Minority Report, but I was unimpressed, ultimately, because of all the silliness. Like lasering the bad guy's name onto a croquet ball. And having Agatha be able to predict where to stand so they can hide behind balloons (as though the cops wouldn't've looked over before getting to that one spot, which Agatha would not have been unable to predict anyway). And having jetpack fire blast inches away from peoples faces without them responding to it.

He's surprisingly consistent. I definitely enjoy his lighter, action/adventure films more. Need to rewatch a bunch of his flicks.

I can see this line of thinking. The Terminal has this great Spielberg-Does-Tati thing, where it's all about these small discoveries. The fountain, the change, the accent, the gambling scenes. And I really enjoy how the film leaves the terminal at the end and grants Viktor a bit of time to do what he originally planned to do.

I love Minority Report as well. I rewatched it recently, and I was still confused by a few points (why does Eddie help out Anderton?), but I adore Morton's performance, love how Sydow's channeling John Huston circa Chinatown, and those recurrent motifs of submersion and eyes ("Can you see?") are some of Spielberg's most subtextually ambitious stuff.
