New Star Trek show with Picard

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/81639

Picard no longer a Starfleet Captain, series directed by Jonathan Frakes. Not sure if the beard can cut it as a TV helmer in the TV landscape which has changed radically since 1994, although the Frakes-helmed STTNG episodes were easily among the best.

Alex Kurtzman is the showrunner, not Frakes. Frakes is a work-for-hire TV director.

Almost everything in the AICN and Screenrant articles was outlined by THR last August. Fanboy blogs gonna fanboy, but it's weird they're running this "news" as current.

Anyway, I have a morbid interest in this show because (a) it's "Star Trek" and (b) it's Stewart. I want it to be good, dammit, but the details haven't been encouraging.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

This is firmly in “I’ll believe it when I see it” territory.

    Yep.

Star Trek as a franchise is in turmoil right now. Discovery has very mixed reviews and ratings dropping consistently, the fourth movie was cancelled, the movie by Tarantino was cancelled.

I’ll believe this is happening when there are shots from the set / a trailer.

Well the fourth movie and the Tarantino movie were never in pre-production like this series is. There were just scripts.

Welllllllllll, your skepticism might be a little misplaced.

The rights to "Star Trek" are owned by 2 corporations. Paramount owns the movies, Viacom/CBS owns the TV. What happens with one property doesn't effect the other.

Paramount shitcanned the Abrams-based "Star Trek 4," but they haven't said anything definitive about the Tarantino project. (They don't need to as they still have the option on it.)

"Discovery's" premiere was broadcast and received ~10 million viewers. The rest of the episodes are on a streaming service and CBS has not announced viewership numbers for them, a la Netflix. Fan reaction was mixed (at least, going by Reddit). Critical reaction was net positive, with something like a 75-80% favorable on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

While "Discovery" had a long and tumultuous development process, "Picard" was only announced only 6 months ago and there hasn't been indications that it's in trouble. Both shows are heavily tied to the success of CBS All Access; they won't go away until the service is on solid footing or it's cancelled itself.

ETA: The only way I could see it not happening is if Patrick Stewart dies or drops out.

ETA2: No, of course I'm not an overly defensive "Trekkie." Why do you ask?

Maybe crossing over into ST Discovery territory at a later time? Would be sweet.

4 episodes in, and I have to say this really needs to get moving. The pace is lethargic, it's exposition-heavy, repeating points way too often, as if the whole production is being held hostage by its premise of old Picard, so it needs to go really slow. Right now this is by no means bad, but I can't say it's fun. At the end of episode 4 they introduce a character from the previous shows and I hope to god they have a good explanation for it, because it came so out of the blue that it felt like the writers realizing they needed a jolt to liven up the glacial proceedings. One other character from the previous shows just sort of happened, suddenly he was there and I would imagine you'd wanna build that up more. But ok, Picard hasn't met this character yet in this show, so perhaps that's gonna work better down the line. The characters, and actors playing them, really aren't grabbing me either.

Really love how they're tying Bruce Maddox into this show, as TNG's 'Measure of a Man' is one of the TNG's best episodes although so far the character hasn't been seen yet so I simply love the idea behind it.

Also, why does something like Lost in Space look like a million bucks, but a new Picard show looks decent at best? Planet settlements have that awfully digital look, like environments aren't lived in, like it's a set that was erected. To be fair, Star Trek has frequently looked like that, but spruce that shit up, make it a bit sleeker, sexier.

It is no exaggeration to say this is one of the most disappointing TV shows I have seen in a long time. Looking past the return of Picard and the interesting premise, its flaws are legion.

    *********SPOILERS********

    - Allegiances shift on a dime for some characters
    - For a show which is basically a race against time, as well as a chase thriller, the show has a terribly glacial pace, rendering it completely unexciting.
    - huge gaps in logic. A borg cube, 10,000 the size of the piramid of Gyzeh, crashes into a planet and does not create so much as a crater. In fact, it looks fairly intact when we see it moments later.
    - Why are fistfights in Star Trek always so stilted and shoddily shot?
    - Plot points which occured earlier are completely abandoned
    - Silly gadgets which are entirely implausible but dictated by the plot, since, otherwise there would be no way out.
    - The show totally botches the return of Hugh and Seven of Nine. The latter parachutes conveniently into the plot whenever the characters need a break. and Hugh, man that shoulda been a big deal, Locutus meeting Hugh, but feels like an afterthought.
    - It also botches the return of character Bruce Maddox from TNG's 'Measure of a Man' episode, who's barely seen, and then dies unceremoniously.
    - The show doesn't botch the return of Riker and Troi, until that too goes out the window in the final episode. This is actually really hilarious. Picard and allies need a break as they're about to be destroyed by a humongous fleet of Romulan ships. The sky is literally ablaze with green specks of light. And then suddenly, squillions of Starfleet ships materialize out of thin air, and they literally all look the same (!). The Romulans are hailed by Starfleet's flagship vessel (which makes no sense since they all look the same), and it is piloted by Riker, who 5 episodes earlier was retired and baking pizza's. Sure, it's great to see the beard again behind the 'wheel', and of course he gets to say some really badass things, but being the pilot of the Starship copy&paste is nothing to be proud of. The stakes at this moment are gigantic, complete fucking annihilation of organic life, and it's less exciting than an episode of the A-team.
    - And oh boy, the actual thing that would bring about armageddon is glimpsed briefly as it emerges from a wormhole: a, well, sort of huge mechanoid squid. Hugh - H = ugh.
    - special effects fail to convince. Ugly space ship designs, garish colors, make this universe feel lived in for a fucking change.
    - Data dies again, or a virtual version of Data, in an admittedly good scene, but he already died in Star Trek Nemesis.
    - there are some more

It was a terrible show from the jump, and badly conceived from top to bottom.

    I lasted 1 episode before I bolted.

CBS has really fucked up "Star Trek" more than I would have thought possible after the job Abrams and Lin did on it.

Season 2 was much better, fan service and nostalgia done reasonably right. There is a strong emotional core to it, which frustrated me sometimes, but paid off in a legit moving final episode, which involves Picard saying goodbye [
    ].

And of course it sets up possible future episodes, one involving Brent Spiner - yes he's in it! - grabbing a classified folder which made my jaw drop a little bit.

About the fan service, well, this is really cool. And I didn't realize it when I watched it. But there is a bit on a bus where Seven and Raffi are on, [
    ] Well, that's fucking awesome.

This has the internet in an uproar, especially the last 10 seconds.

Also cool, Amanda Plummer, Christopher's daughter, is the villain.

Besides the fact that I'm tired of Vengeance stories and the general lack of cerebral stuff in Trek, this looks like a great send off for the TNG crew. And long overdue.
