Video Games...Discuss Them

It appears to me that Nintendo has decided to focus on the DS as their traditional games machine, while the Wii is their casual/new market console.

While the line is often blurred, I think a case can be made for this division.

At least 3rd parties are fairing better on the DS than they are the Wii.

Regarding Wiimusic, from 1Ups's live blog...

10:00 -- Phil: So there is no playing the wrong notes or making mistakes as long as you're moving the controller around like it's a real instrument. Over fifty different instruments will be in the game, including the drums, sax, piano, violin, guitar, and a "variety of percussion instruments."


9:59 -- Phil: This was one of the first games they started designing for the Wii alongside Wii Play, Wii Fit, and Wii Sports. They're saying it will be a different experience than past music games. Apparently won't involve pressing buttons to match a specific beat. "No need to closely follow any musical notes or rhythm guides," so anyone can play it. You just hold the Wii remote and move your hands like you would if you were playing an instrument.


So, if you can't really mess up, and all you have to do is pretend to play, is there really a game here?

The best thing about Rock Band and Guitar Hero is that, at their cores, these games are like old school arcade games. They are played over and over again to get better scores and more accuracy. They epitomize core gaming mechanics, and add a layer of fun. If you strip away the game mechanics, then aren't you just paying money to play air guitar?

I'm pretty sure this was announced for 360 too. Wasn't this Riddick remake supposed to come out by christmas 2007 originally?

I think they will, because they've only showed 2 games for it so far. I expect a God of War 3 teaser at least. But first they have to get the PS2, PSN and Home stuff out of the way I guess. :P

They're really pushing Resistance as the premier PS title.

I don't really see it as such. IMO, Drake's Fortune is a far more compelling title.
