[Hanging out last night in my room with my roommate.]

ROOMMATE: Hey, maybe this internet dating thing will work out and you'll fall in love and marry someone.

    ME: Mm.

RM: And maybe he won't be able to relocate and you'll have to relocate to him.

    ME: Mm.

RM: And if you do, I don't think you should sell this house. You should keep it as a rental, and I could work as your property manager, and rent out my bedroom.

    ME: ...mm?

RM: Because I'd move into this room. My dresser would fit right there.

ME: ...are you trying to marry me off so you can get the bigger bedroom?

    RM: YES.

She is great. I haven't gotten along so well with a roommate in years and years. It's always an adjustment living with a new person, but she is smart and funny and we enjoy hanging out. She's also particularly bonded with my cat.

Is she temporary like the last one? I take it from her trying to steal your bedroom that she'll be there a while.

She just started a PhD program, so she's going to be in the city for a few years if nothing changes.

Seriously, though, it cracks me up. She was redecorating in her head while I was right there.

So i'm really psyched. Some friends and i have committed seriously to a long-range plan to travel to somewhere in the southern hemisphere next december. It's a long way away so we can plan for the cost and such. We're talking about options like Australia, NZ, Cape Town, Rio, Buenos Aires, etc. I'm so ready for something like this, as I've been feeling geographically cloistered for several years now.

Any thoughts or suggestions or advice will be appreciated if anyone has good experience planning for such things.

Not sure if you're into outdoors-y type stuff, but I would love to backpack up the Inca trail and visit Macchu Picchu before I croak.

Only time I've been in the Southern Hemisphere was for a 90 day wilderness expedition in Chilean Patagonia, which was tits. Let me know if you're interested and I'll supply details.

Depending on how many are you and how long you're staying, I can give you lodgings. At the very least I can show you around.

If you need people in Rio, I might have a few friends left from when I travelled there in 2009.

I work in grocery. I have not gotten sick. My fellow employees have not gotten sick. If the virus were even remotely as contagious as its being presented as, why haven’t entire store staffs who come into contact with hundreds of people per day, thousands per week, all falling ill in mass nationwide?

I met my current boyfriend through an online dating site HOWEVER, there is a 95% chance the only reason we met in person was because we had mutual friends. That being said, there have been other people that I might have met, just that it never progressed to that point. I think online dating can work, but requires -- as with real world dating, a lot of patience, trust and trial and error.

Mara, I think you should avoid POF, it is the sketchiest of all sites... that at least is my impression as a woman. As for OkCupid, while I found success there, I am not sure if it will work for what you might be looking for. At least in my personal experience, the majority of the users are non-religious. That could be a side-effect of where I live, but I've heard the same from other people across Canada and the USA. Then again, there is a feature where you can search people by religion. Maybe create a profile and see what you can find... you don't need to commit to anything, and it can be fun to try out. Think of it as being an experience in which you have nothing to lose, you never have to message anyone, let alone meet someone and at best, you get a date or two, maybe meet someone who can be a great friend. I'd approach it in this way, looking to meet new people rather than as an opportunity to find someone to "see". It can be fun

At the moment, I'm on a religion-specific site. So far creepy to non-creepy has been about a 4:1 ratio. Which isn't great, but isn't awful. And the site makes it easy to ignore creepers.

I made the mistake of mentioning it to my mother, and she got way too excited. It's just a weird little experiment for me, but I know that she really wants me to marry and have kids, even if she's decent enough not to talk about it.

My answer would have been "because nobody watches music videos anymore," bu that is actually a better answer (except for the piracy thing, which I assume is just because it's coming from a network head character).

"That question is literally old enough to drive a car" is the best part. People who complain about MTV are annoying.

It's not that bad. It's just free, and I think online dating is a thing where you get what you pay for.

Nah, I don't think so. It's all a matter of demographic, really.

If you're a 20-something social person, there's no question that OKCupid is the best option for short term dating (with the option of longer relationships being up to the involved parties afterwards). Their algorithms are definitely the most interesting in terms of matches, which usually matches you with people who'd be great to hang out with even if there's no relationship happening.

If you're older and looking for something mature and steady right off the bat, then you're better off with older-skewing sites like eHarmony.

If you're looking for anything more specific (religious compatibility or kink-specific), there are other sites for those, as well.

I actually went on a date with a guy who's a programmer for OKCupid a few months ago. Nothing came out of it, but it was super interesting talking about his job.

Fair. Although I know many more people my age use match.com because they at least know that the guys aren't bums.

I'm very happy someone made this video. The "because it makes you feel superior" bit at the end is the most frustrating (and true) piece of the puzzle.
