My new roommate has a similar relationship with Gilmore Girls that I have with Buffy-- not necessarily thinking it's the best show ever, but enjoying it a lot and watching it regularly like comfort food and able to have convoluted opinions on everything that happens on it.
I'm rather fond of Gilmore Girls-- I watched it under duress and found it much more charming than I expected. Anyway, I was rewatching a few episodes and I figured something out.
There's this verbal tic that my roommate has, and it is kind of baffling and weird, and I just figured out that it's a Gilmore Girls-themed tic. Similar to Buffy, the writing is stylized and slightly unrealistic, so what sounds cute on television doesn't make much sense in real conversations.
Specifically, it's Lorelei-based.
CHARACTER: Why won't you [do something sensible]?
LORELEI: Because of Nancy Lawhoie and Benji!
CHARACTER: Wait, what?
LORELEI: You see, in my sophomore year [extremely detail-specific story about Nancy Lawhoie and Benji that sort-of-but-not-really explains her refusal to do something sensible.]
In real life, it goes more like this.
ME: Why don't you like oatmeal cookies?
ROOMMATE: Because of Pete.
[long pause]
ME: I... I don't know who Pete is. Do I know who Pete is?
ROOMMATE: [long story about some guy named Pete]
ME: Why did you make it sound like I knew who he was?
Now that I know it's my job to give her a cue into her little story, I think this will actually stop feeling weird.

oh man, i know people who do that and it can be enervating. i have a friend who is constantly referring to people i obviously don't know by their names as if i do, which is kind of similar.

Hey, we had a two-hour delay out of Columbus last night because of those storms. And a friend's flight to Chicago was cancelled entirely. Craziness.
In the meantime, Columbus's The Book Loft boasts 32 "rooms" of books. It was beautiful. I want to go there again, and might have to drive back down there from the Kent area during holiday season in December. Few things are sadder than realizing you can't go on a spending spree because you flew and can't haul back everything you want.

Nov 7 is my 5-year anniversary with HP. I've crossed a magical threshold! I get an extra week of vacation starting next year!

Edwin Pope of the Miami Herald once made a keen observation about Chicago in one of his editorials:
"When you considering everything it has to do to make up for its horrible weather, Chicago may be the best city in the World."
I'm biased, but I agree. I love that city. I would love to live there someday. Weather issues and all.
Yeah it's a pretty fantastic store. The restaurants and that store are the only good reasons to enter The German Village, imo. I don't care how beautiful the brick streets and architecture are, that place is insufferable to drive and park in. Did you go there on your delay? If so, how in the world did you get from the airport to the German Village and back again in two hours?

For some demented reason I have never been there. Always been a Graeters gal. It's so stupid. All I hear is great things but I keep procrastinating.
We hit up The Book Loft on Saturday night (after getting Vietnamese pho with lamb, a delectable that simply doesn't exist in nowheresville, Oklahoma), so we didn't do that immediately before the flight. We found the parking easy enough, so maybe weekend traffic (during an OSU away game) contributed to the ease of that area. Everyone was taken aback by how pretty the architecture was, though.
The conference we attended was a midwest pop culture conference, and we had one of the CEOs of Jeni's speak at it during a lunch gathering. I hadn't tried the brand before, but the ice cream mixed with berries looks incredible. We didn't have time to find one of their stores, but we did find containers of their bland. The Pistachio with Honey flavor was the best of those I tried...

Fresno, CA is not known for its book stores (LOL!) but it does have one store that is one of the best book stores I've ever been to - The Book Barn.
While there this weekend, I held in my hands a first edition (AH version) At the Mountains of Madness. The owner also has a nearly-complete collection of first edition Arkham House books.
And I bought one of the last William Saroyan memoirs I need to complete my collection. It's a first edition, and, what's more, was actually owned by Saroyan.
So yeah - it's a miracle that this store exists in Fresno, a city in which people are far more likely to ask you WHY you are reading, not WHAT you are reading.
Any of you comic-con folks have recommended places to eat in the Gaslamp District? I'll be going to Searsucker on Thursday but otherwise looking for any place or price range that might be worth it. Walking around just saw too many places and couldn't choose.
If you're in San Diego, it's your duty to try what good Mexican food actually tastes like. It's the one thing I grumble about the most in the East Coast.

Yeh Mexican around here sucks. I've visited so many restaurants and I've only found one that is decent up in NH, and they don't even make their own tortillas.
Searsucker is phenomenal. I got the pork belly app and the duck two ways for entree. Loved it so much I had it again next time I was there. A really memorable, delicious meal. Very trendy place. Lots of hotties. Get a drink or two at the bar first.
Only place I really liked in the Gaslamp, to be honest. It's a touristy area.
Cucina Urbana is really good but not in the area, though not far.
There's a breakfast place called Hash House that was ridiculously good. Same neighborhood as CU. There's a long line and would recommend getting there early.

Well, I am half Mexican and various members of my family are pretty good Mexican cooks. I'm fairly familiar with good Mexican food and rarely trust restaurants to make it at all. Even when people have recommended a place on the basis of it finally being "real authentic Mexican food" I'm usually still disappointed. So that's not likely to happen unless someone I'm eating with is craving it.
By the way, this convention center is fucking massive.
Yeah, my only really reliable choice in Maryland for good Mexican food is through having Hispanic friends who cook.

Sweet. I'll let you know what I have and what I think of it. I didn't rent a car, so not sure if I'll get to any places not within a reasonable walking distance, but we'll see.
Cabs are reasonable and you don't have to call for one. Just flag down on the street. Show some leg
