Guys and gals, please promise me that, as adults, when you have birthday parties, you don't open the presents in front of everybody before they leave.
Because that happened last night, and I could not believe it was happening. This girl is 27 years old, and she's acting like she's eight.
Please don't do that. It's insulting.

Adults have birthday parties where guests bring presents?!

The opening-gifts-during thing is pretty new, though. I wasn't expecting that.
I might bring a bottle of whiskey, but, Hell, its usually gone by the end of the night.Quoting number8 (view post)
“What we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, er... an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks and that's all.”
We usually open presents straight away. It's polite to thank the guests immediately.
I wasn't. The birthday parties among friends I know of are at restaurants or bars, so presents come in the form of buying a drink. If it's at someone's place, then like Scar said, we bring a bottle for everybody to drink. Nobody brings actual presents unless they're super BFFs or significant others.Quoting Dead & Messed Up (view post)
Movie Theater DiaryQuoting Donald Glover
My family members give gifts for birthdays, and we open them together. I wasn't aware of any etiquette rule stating otherwise. The nicest part of giving a present is seeing the person's face when they open it.
I usually send my friends a card, or maybe flowers or something if it's a significant birthday. Sometimes I take a friend out to dinner.

Seeing that I don't drink... and my family doesn't drink and most of my friends don't drink... it always surprises me to find out how many social conventions are generally linked to alcohol. It would never occur to me to buy someone a drink as a birthday present.

For milestone birthdays I have brought a gift. A good chunk of my buddies, for example, are turning 40, and I've brought a present along with the standard six pack or other adult beverage.
Losing is like fertilizer: it stinks for a while, then you get used to it. (Tony, Hibbing)
Family's a different situation, and I'm certainly not against gift-giving. I like to think I've got a handle on getting stuff I can afford that still holds some genuine value to the other person.Quoting Mara (view post)
My friend had a variety of friends visiting, some more casual than others, so it bugs me to see my gift implicitly compared to more personal, expensive gifts she's receiving from others. I think that's inconsiderate on her part, the way it becomes this weird centerpiece presentation that shows the gap between inner and outer circles.
Oh, I see. That would be very awkward.Quoting Dead & Messed Up (view post)
...and the milk's in me.
One of my newer social circles had something similar happen in regards to presents. I don't gift give unless it's like people have said with buying a drink or we might go out to eat and may buy their dinner or something like unto that. With family we're not big on presents but family is a different animal then friends.
Anyways in this newer social circle which is admittedly pretty odd there are two girls who have very little in the ways of social experience. The one which is less overpowering I have an alright time with but the girl that is very overpowering rubs me the wrong way a lot and apparently I can do the same to her sometimes especially in situations in which I do something which if she had more social experience would not be a problem but since she doesn't, it is. So she invites me to her birthday, I say, "sure, I'll try and make it." Then she suddenly gets stern and says, "Good, you're required to bring me a present to get in." From then on whenever she asked me about her party I said I couldn't go. The day of she sent me a text saying, "You should come, you don't have to bring a present." I still didn't go because everyone else had to bring a present and apparently there was also a list posted online by her roommate of her wishlist in regards to presents.

The car temperature gauge Saturday and yesterday hit 117. A little cool-down from this heatwave would be nice for my ability to appreciate Oklahoma weather a bit more.
Having a back porch to go and read on in the mornings, though, is sublime. I've typically gone out and read from 6:30-7:30, which is only in the mid-eighties, and allows for fresh air and an array of bird calls and wildlife chirps. So relaxing.
