While she is undeniably talented and I do wish her the best with regards to putting her life and career back together, I must say that I have absolutely no sympathy for the Amy Winehouse's and Lindsay Lohan's of the world.

EDIT: Perhaps more sympathy for Lohan since she was a child star, and that seems to really mess people up.
Everyone has their demons. I think it's very unfortunate that hers is so debilitating and hard to resist. I have a lot of sympathy for her, and for others like her. That's a very hard life to turn away from.

I just got into the Google Music Beta and I have the same problem I have with the Amazon cloud in that you can't make any changes to music you have. They have the wrong cover art on some of my albums and you can't edit that. It splits some of my albums into two or more albums because they have guest stars on them and I can't put them back together. You can't edit song or album titles.
Pardon me I was wrong you can edit all that stuff!

Drug addiction is no joke. It is probably worse when you have a lot of funds to support your addiction and your recovery is being covered by international media.

I thought she was one of those stars who turned to drugs and the like because they couldn't handle the stresses of fame?

I find it hard to feel bad for these people, particularly in this day and age where everyone knows what to expect from this style of life.

It's like stars who constantly complain about paparazzi and the press invading their private lives. They know full well going into this career that that's kind of part of the deal.

    She's only 27 bro.
So were many other great talents. Luckily, Winehouse hasn't gone that way yet. But it wouldn't surprise me. When was her last album anyway?

I don't think drug addiction is a joke at all. That's not what I said.

Like I said in reply to KF, I thought Amy Winehouse was a case of drug addiction due to fame, not an already existing condition.

I just do not see how someone can claim naivety today, that they didn't know it would be this much pressure and attention.

Don't you kind of go into this type of thing wanting the attention? At least in most cases?

"No joke" = slang for "really hard to deal with."

I was just saying that it doesn't matter what the reason is. She's been genuinely trying to kick her habits and, like many drug addicts, is failing miserably. It's sad.

There's a difference between wanting to be a singer or an actor and knowing that there will be paparazzi and experiencing that in actuality. For instance someone spying on you at your private house and needing to make sure you have sufficient security wherever you go or getting mobbed when you want to go buy a carton of milk. Have you seen some of the videos of the paparazzi swarming Leo Dicaprio? It's insane.

So you'd feel bad for her if she was addicted to drugs in general and before she was famous but not if she became addicted due to the new pressures she now faces and peer pressure from other rockers to do so? Give me a break.

Yeah, it's insane. But you saw the videos...why wouldn't they have?

I'm sorry, there's just no way that you can't know that's part of the gig.

Can't they be fully aware of what being super-famous entails, and still feel that it's total bullshit and should not be that way? To just say "welp, they should've thought about that beforehand!" is ridiculous.

There are plenty of acting careers that do not involve the paparazzi. For example stage acting, which many many actors say is much more fulfilling than film acting anyways.

It's also a completely different style of acting and one that someone could find less fulfilling than the other. Personally I've primarily acted for the stage and I much prefer acting for a camera because I don't like to over-exaggerate my emotional responses.

Spinal's not going to like that.

But yes, you're still right in that people will prefer one to the other. Film acting is an artform. One can reject the paparazzi if they want to, as many actors/actresses have mentioned in the past. But if you're young and very good looking, sometimes they'll follow you no matter where you go in hopes you slip now. The swarms around Leo, who I've always seen as a laidback celeb, is quite scary. He handles it quite well.

I imagine it would probably be really hard to imagine that you're going to be super-famous until it actually happens. I imagine it usually starts with someone pursuing what they love and struggling to get noticed, not imagining that one day it will all spiral out of control.

By this logic, the movie industry would shut down completely, no? This just doesn't make much sense to me. Your attitude about this seems very callous. I think Spinal's observation about fame is spot on. The people who make it are just trying to pursue what they love. Fame tends to come out of nowhere, it isn't something that slowly builds. It can blindside a person, and coming to grips with that new reality must be incredibly difficult. Some handle it better than others, but to brush someone off because they should have known it would be a difficult life is a strange reaction, especially when drug addiction is such a personal problem.

I like Zach Galifianakis' take on it. He was asked about his current fame and he said he's glad that he made it big when he's 40 and already working in showbiz for 15 years, because if The Hangover had happened when he was in his 20's, he doesn't think he would've been able to handle it as well.

This is going to be a big week for me.

Tomorrow I have my G2 driving test which, if I pass, means I can...

    a) drive alone (without a licensed driver in the passenger seat supervising me)

    b) own my own car

    and most importantly...

    c) get to and from work without relying on Ottawa's (freaking awful) public transportation system!

Then, on Tuesday/Wednesday, I will find out if I get a very important promotion at work.

It's looking good as of now. Apparently there were more than a dozen applicants, and I was one of 3 people chosen for an interview.

The interview went really well yesterday, and the manager of the department to which I was applying told me today that I "did a great job yesterday."

This promotion would not only mean a permanent full-time position and pay increase, but also full medical and dental coverage (which is something I could REALLY use).
