Neither are domestic abuse victims, really.

Exactly. I see it as being a runaway more than statuatory rape.
The obvious answer is to cut off Polanski's toolkit and put it behind bars.

The notion of letting him go is strange to me. Who cares if the victim wants it to be over with? What does that have to do with the justice system? He committed statutory rape after drugging a 13 year old girl. He hasn't been punished. He committed ANOTHER crime to escape the other one. How is this even being debated? Is Polanski somehow above the law?

Well, theres some good ole fashioned nightmare fuel.
Well, victim statements and consideration for their suffering is a huge part of the justice system, as it should be. That doesn't necessarily mean that Polanski should go free, he did a terrible thing, but to ignore what the victim wants is also in a way a miscarriage of justice. Many factors come into play, and as terrible as the whole thing is, it is still not cut and dry, especially with so much time having past.Quoting Brightside (view post)
As for Polanski escaping the law, he was mislead, and instead of handling it legally through the court systems he fled. He made a very poor decision, and I do think he deserves jail time for that. Looking at Polanski's life leading up to that point, it is no surprise that he did, he had his reasons for distrusting authoritative figures, and the judicial system. Though, again, it does not necessarily alleviate the fact that he really made a mockery of justice.

Of course, it's very common in cases of abuse for victims to blame themselves and absolve the abuser. That doesn't mean the abuser is innocent, though, it's just a normal psychological response of a person who's been abused. I don't know a lot about the actual "event," but from what I understand the gist is she was at this wild party at Nicholson's house and Polanski took her to a private area. He gave her booze and a quaalude and then had anal sex with her. Obviously to be at like this debauched Hollywood party she probably wasn't an honors student or anything, but she was still only 13. At this point, it really doesn't matter whether she wants it all to be over with. It could've been over with a long time ago if Polanski just took his medicine to begin with
This is the second time Brightside has stated Polanski drugged the girl. It's also the first time I've ever heard of this.
Is this even true?

I had a maddening conversation today with a female friend who has begun taking a course in Feminist Studies as an elective for her uni. degree, and decided that man-hating is a way of "evening out the playing field" after hundreds of years of inequality.

Oh no, it certainly wasn't the teacher.
I know the program of which she was speaking, and it's actually quite an interesting look at history and doesn't have even a smidgeon of "girl power! let's hate men!" in it.
It's just how she twisted it in her own head.
It was getting very aggravating because everything I said she would somehow twist to make it sound like I was being sexist, even if it was a totally innocent statement with no gender implications at all.
