I've always thought of that as a pretty dumb rule.

Everyone keeps saying it's a dumb rule, but what do you expect to happen in that scenario (assuming we all agree he didn't have control of the ball). ?

If you fumble in your own end zone, it's a safety (you don't get to keep possession).
If you fumble forward it's a Touch Back (you don't get to keep possession).

The rule is consistent whether you fumble it forward or back.

Now if you're just arguing whether he fumbled at all, well then you're a crazy person.

Fumble backwards, sure... Safety. Fully agree. If one's about to be tackled and throws the ball outside of bounds, I think it's deserving. That makes sense.

In the middle of the field, if you fumble, it goes out of bounds, it's marked at the line of scrimmage of where the ball leaves.

Fumble forwards, I don't think it should be a turnover. My own thinking is that it should go to the five yard line (or wherever a 2 pt conversion goes). This RARELY happens as it is.

Exactly, it rarely happens. So this is a non issue. Except somehow it happened twice this week.

The rule should punish the fumbling team. And it does.

Call me crazy. I didn't see a fumble. It was bobbled for a milli-second before he regained possession of it. The ball never once hit the ground and he regained full possession before hitting out-of-bounds. In no other scenario is that called a "fumble." How can a ball that never touches the ground be "fumbled"?

First of all, that's a completely different scenario. If Tom Brady had caught the ball in the air before Clowney, then it would not be ruled a "fumble." That is exactly what ASJ did.
