You must. *insists* David Tennant's incarnation of the Doctor is my ideal.

Ditto. It seems like the sort of thing I should/would be into, but I've just never really tried it.

Is this a new series? I thought it was rather old. If it's a newer version, I haven't seen either. Should I watch one over the other?

I have seen many episodes of the original series. The new series, which had Christopher Eccleston as the doctor for the first season, I haven't seen much of. I have seen a couple with Tennant and he is quite good. Though, if I'm not mistaken, isn't it time for another regeneration?

My family loves it, have seen all of the new episodes and have the first two seasons on DVD. I've never actually sat down and watched all of them, but from what I've seen both Eccleston and Tennant are superb but some episodes are more monster-of-the-week than anything actually essential to a bigger plot (especially in season 3).

Of all the episodes I've seen though, my favourite has to be the standalone episode "Blink" written by Steven Moffat. It maybe has only two full scenes or so with the Doctor, but on its own it's just a fantastic piece of television (for sci-fi and horror especially) set in the universe of the show.

It may be not be huge in North America, but it really seems to be like the biggest thing over in the UK from what little news bits about it I come across.
Last 11 things I really enjoyed:

    Speed Racer (Wachowski/Wachowski, 2008)
    Safe (Haynes, 1995)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (Parker, 1999)
    Beastie Boys Story (Jonze, 2020)
    Bad Trip (Sakurai, 2020)
    What's Up Doc? (Bogdanovich, 1972)
    Diva (Beineix, 1981)
    Delicatessen (Caro/Jeunet, 1991)
    The Hunger (Scott, 1983)
    Pineapple Express (Green, 2008)
    Chungking Express (Wong, 1994)

The old one ran for the 60s-80s. It was resurrected a couple of years ago.
You should definately watch the David Tennant episodes. I'm sure your family would love them.

I've seen some of the old series thanks to PBS reruns. I've seen most of Season 1 of the new series also thanks to PBS, and some of Season 3 (or was it 4?) since I have the Sci-Fi channel. Its pretty good stuff for the most part, but nothing that I love dearly or really want to catch up on.

As my avatar should indicate, I'm a pretty huge fan, especially of the old series. When I was a kid, I remember having to plead with my parents to stay up late enough to watch new hampshire public television to watch the Doctor.

The conceit of the show was what really captured my imagination. Traveling through time and space with a genius alien in a funky spaceship. When I was a kid, all I could say was wow! And his pacifist tendencies were really the thing that made me respect him. Always the ethicist, that Doctor. I also grew up watching Anthony Ainsley as the Master: his brand of villainy was just so much fun.

Pertwee would probably be my second favorite. I always thought that Peter Davidson was kind of cool though too.

I do like the new series, and I think that Tennant is probably a better fit than Eccleston. Although it's good to have both serious and funny doctors. Pertwee was mostly serious, whereas Baker was more lighthearted. Really, the role calls for alternating actorly abilities.

Tom Baker is the one I've seen the most of, and I love him as the Doctor. Eccleston it seems came pretty damn close to capturing that same spirit. And Tenent has been pretty badass, but also capable of showing the same cheaky spirit that makes the Doctor such a great character. I wonder what pretty lady will join the Doctor in his travels next-the guy seems to always have a foxy lady by his side. He's got pimp status man.

Peter Davidson had the right tone down, I think, for the Doctor, and had the right look, but he was never supported by the best scripts.

Also, his performance in that children in need video isn't really indicative of his normal doctor performance. Much more curmudgeonly, also he's getting old and fat.

    Rose's returning!!!! *victory dance*

Billie Piper to return to Dr Who
Actress Billie Piper is to return to Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.
She will star in three episodes of the sci-fi drama, reprising her role as the Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler.

Rose's return will mean the Doctor has three assistants in next year's series - Donna, played by Catherine Tate, and Freema Agyeman as Martha.

The new series begins in March and will run for 13 episodes. There will be three special editions in 2009 before the show takes a break until 2010.

Piper left Doctor Who last year, when Rose was transported into a parallel universe.

John Simm could be the next Doctor!

    http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/whats...1466-20096490/

THE man hotly tipped to take over from David Tennant as the next Doctor Who may have to come back from the dead before he starts.

Speculation is growing that John Simm, most famous for his starring role in the 1970s cop show Life on Mars, will take up residence in the Tardis when its current occupant leaves the role.

But the 35-year-old has already appeared in the cult series earlier this year as the Master, one of the Doctor’s greatest adversaries.

He appeared to die at the end of the episode, but after being cremated on a funeral pyre, a female hand could be seen picking up a ring belonging to the character from the ashes, to the sound of the Master’s maniacal laughter, prompting fans to speculate that the character will in face return to the show.

If Simm is to return in any guise, the show’s writers would either have to explain his resurrection or add him in another way.

And if he is indeed to return as the Doctor, an even more ingenious explanation will be required to account for his transformation from the Timelord’s sworn enemy to the central character himself – unless, of course, their facial similarities are entirely glossed over.

But Elaine Penn, features editor of TV Choice magazine and a huge Doctor Who fan, said the writers would not worry about the producing an apparently implausible storyline to explain the transformation.

She said, “To have someone who played such a major role in the series already to come back as the Doctor could be a little confusing for people, especially children.

“But anything is possible, that’s the wonderful thing about Doctor Who, anything goes.

“We have already seen the Doctor’s assistant supposedly killed off, only to come back in a later show.”

Simm may indeed have the right contacts to land the show’s main role, having already worked on Life on Mars, which, like Doctor Who, is a BBC Wales production.

But Ms Penn said she thought it was still a little premature to be suggesting names to replace Tennant in 2009, when he is expected to leave the show.

She added, “Maybe it’s a little too early to say for definite who it will be. If John Simm has been photographed on the set there is nothing to say he couldn’t just be coming back as one of the Doctor’s enemies.”

Tennant is currently filming the fourth series of the award-winning show in Cardiff with comedian Catherine Tate as his sidekick.

The series will be aired in 2008 with three specials planned for 2009 but Tennant has agreed to play Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company so may finish with his role as the Doctor.

The BBC’s search for a replacement has led to heavy speculation about the identity of Tennant’s successor, with Simm now appearing favourite to take the role.

An unnamed BBC source was quoted in a London-based papers yesterday saying, “John is absolutely over the moon. He’s got a six-year-old son who is a massive Doctor Who fan and can’t believe his dad is going to get to fly the Tardis at work.

“John is a superb actor and will follow in the footsteps of David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor.”
