Shin Godzilla (2016) - 7.5
On brand (in the best way) that Linklater with Netflix money would still produce a bigger-scope hangout film. Weakest aspect is the small semblance of a plot in the kid's space mission, even if countered nicely by coding it as daydream fantasy. But when most of the film is grounded in the specificity of the era, its reverie's nostalgia is so vivid and immersive. Resistant to the voice-over at first, but over time the tactile details given by it, plus Jack Black's performance, just add to the transportative quality of this world. Lovely and wistful. 7.5/10

Very excited for this one. I'll try it this week.

Can we all agree this kinda rocks? It'll probably not be everyone's cup of tea but its detailed minutae of 60s life and social takes through the eyes of a child gelled wonderfully with my sensibilities and even current interests (see: the short film I posted in the Argentina, 1985 thread), and this is a movie only Linklater could have made in what's become a prolific year for coming-of-age, autobiographical films.
The debate over whether it's an animated film or not is too dumb for words. Of course it is.
