    That's how I saw it as well. It's a humdinger of a melodrama shot in a neorealist style and a comprehensive inventory of Egyptian modernity circa 1958 (mass transit, pinups, Coca-Cola, hipster rock 'n' rollers, Marilyn Monroe); when a pair of religious fundamentalists do briefly turn up, they're presented as comic fuddy-duddies.

    I really could have and should have written something about on my blog. I too admired how it balanced the past with then modern aspects clashing against each other. The ending is pretty intense, too.
