If anything, this shows just how dominant the sisters were in their sport.
I kinda get the complaint of telling a Venus/Serena story through their father's pov, but as a film it provides a sports-drama alternative route that offsets the genre's inherent familiarity (short of using my favorite one: providing both sides of the competitors with equal development, like Warrior or Rush) by having a central figure of internal conflict on the way to success. Too long and ultimately hagiographic (especially in the first half-hour and the way it concludes), but it gets more thorny within that framework as it goes along, aided by Will Smith's performance of equal movie star charisma and willingness to go full-in on his character's more tyrannical traits. Even better is Saniyya Sidney as Venus, providing a great counterbalance to Smith in the film's latter half, and all the tennis scenes may be the best I've seen done on film. 6.5/10
